Horus X12S bricked ? !!
« on: October 13, 2017, 14:50:13 PM »
Hi Guys.
Well purchased an X12S, with open TX March 2017 installed, which seemed to be ok, but I thought I would try and upgrade it to the May 2017 version !

Downloaded Zadig driver and went through procedure on Companion 2.2, wrote firmware to the radio..... And nothing, it won't power up.... Black screen, Have I managed to brick my Horus ??

HELP !!

You will probably need to disconnect the battery, Instructions are in the liked page.

Quote
In the rare case that the X12S will not start after flashing, reconnect the X12S to the PC and re-flash the system.  If the X12S system is not recognized by the PC then there is a possibility that a bad flash process has hung the system and the battery needs to be disconnected for a few minutes to fully shut down the system and then re-flash.  In some cases the battery may need to be disconnected until the flashing process is complete.

Hi Gerry.
Yep have tried that..... nothing, as it said the the pc did not recognise the the TX unless the battery is disconnected, but that was after the bad flash, tried re flashing with the battery off, the flash went ok, but re connected and still nothing, the only thing that lights up is the charging light if the charger is plugged in.

Strange that, when I first started the flashing process, the TX connected ok with the battery connected, now the only way the pc sees it is if the battery is off.

Not yet, a bit confused as to how to do that on Companion which files to to use, have downloaded all the FrOS stuff from Frsky, the .bin file or the .dfu or both.

The original idea was to update OpenTX then save the TX settings in Companion, then try to put FrOS back on.
Wish I had not messed with it at all now !

You don't use companion, that's for OpenTX only.
You copy the files to the sd card and switch the TX on while holding down the enter button on the rotary selector.

Instructions are in the word doc I linked to.

Just tried that, problem is the thing is completely dead, just nothing happens, no response at all, just a dead black screen.

Think I may have a rather expensive door stop !!

Had another thought, while is was doing the writing firmware to TX, I had the TX on charge, Could that have caused a problem ?

Yes Tom I have, but will try again over the weekend, trouble is, the thing is just dead, it's almost like a fuse has blown and it's just getting no power.

Have these things got a fuse anywhere ?

Frank, the problem is almost certainly a problem with the firmware, unfortunately not my area of expertise, but I had a similar problem when I first got my Horus. It took FrSky to develop a firmware upgrade and a couple of guys on RCGroups to sort my problem out. Since then numerous occurrences appear on RCGroups and are usually sorted with a little patience.

Frank, hopefully its just your terminology,  but I hope you have not used a charger on the Horus as you have stated, as the Horus has the charger built inside the case,  and only a 12v power supply should be used.

A few people have made that mistake (with the Taranis, too), so thought I should mention it if only to point others away from using one!

Good point, however the power supply is 18v, not 12.

No on the charging, just plugged the 3pin Frsky power supply in the mains and the other end in the tx socket, charged up fine.

Have posted on rc groups.

Still odd that it just does nothing, no error messages etc just dead, as I said even with FrOS sd in and hold enter whilst pushing power button...... Black screen.

Frank, When you wrote OpenTX did you have the radio switched on?
FrSky firmware should be written whilst the radio is off and OpenTX when it is on.
What RCGroup thread have you posted in?

Hi Tom.
Thought the tx had to be off when writing OpenTX firmware , with the FrOS you put the sd card with the firmware on and held down the enter button whilst pushing the power button.

RC Groups post here.

Itís a while since I upgraded my Horus, so I could be wrong about having the Tx on to write OpenTX to the radio. However, I know I wrote FROS to the radio from my computer, although You can write it from the SD Card, but you canít use the SD Card if you have the radio off, or battery removed. I will have a look at updating my Horus tonight and will thoroughly check the method before I start.
Looked at your post and see Mike (Jet-flyer) has picked up your post. He is one of the guys that helped me and is the author of the instructions on the FrSky website.

Edit: radio does have to be off when writing OpenTX

Hi Guys.
It's alive !! Followed Mike's procedure to the letter, in doing so noticed I had loaded The sd card contents for the QX7 on the X12S card ! And checked to many things in the "build options".

Anyway put the correct card contents on and very carefully loaded OTX and it fired up a treat, really thought it was bricked, thank you all for your help.

Frank.

Hi Guys.
Sorry to be a pain, have another issue now, setting up a model that will run on an external Frsky DJT module, so set the external rf to on and ppm with internal rf off in the model settings and nothing the module does not light up.

The module is fine, it works perfectly under the same parameters in my Taranis QX7.

Any ideas ? Am I missing something.

Cheers.
