I need a new radio - futabarists need not reply
« on: March 19, 2018, 17:07:43 PM »
Having read loads about all this i'm pretty much sold on a frsky system - thing is which one  $%&

I am a simple soul most of my models are edf's electric foamies, pylon racers  and a few scale glow powered models. I'm happy to fly what i've got with my ageing dx7 bought when they first came out but i have had the odd issue with it and now i'm building a jet I think it might be the time to upgrade.

So to cut to the chase i'm a full time carer for my partner who has dementia so money has to be taken into account. I could afford a X12S but do I need it. Seems to me the x7 is a quarter the price but worth going for the  x7s as you get the hall effect controls

Futabarists no offence meant I know its good stuff but my minds made up

Friend has got a X7, note it doesn't have any sliders, so if you are OK using the rotary knob or 3 position switch for flaps then it would be fine, if not you'd need to look further up the range.

Iím in the same boat here. I have a first generation dx7. I have only just learnt that the old dms modulation is out of favour with the EU. Just to catch up, Iíve been out of the hobby for a few years. So Iím looking at the dx8, DSMX thingey bob.

So Iím interested in this topic. So what is good?

Just changed to an x12 from hitec 9 which is a great radio but was becoming a bit limited. I also looked at Futaba but for the money and functionality  the Frsky was a no brainier especially when you add the price of receivers to the equation. I ended up buying the full EU model from hobby king and saved about £150 just made sure I payed on a credit card in case of any issues

I bought the Taranis halls to experiment with and I wouldnt get hung up on hall-effect sticks.
Yes they're nice, but so are the originals. Some have even said they dont like the 'feel' of halls
with their complete lack of damping  :)

Thanks for the replies chaps  :af

And Phil thanks for the thoughts on the halls. From a distant memory of A level physics I thought they would not require any physical contact and would therefore be more reliable. Might still go with it - not sure.

I suppose what I really want to know (and i'll probably get the terminology wrong cos i'm no expert ::)) is do all the frsky tx's use the same transmission system i.e. is the radio link equally sound with all of them. I'm quite happy to not have sliders but fear I could end up flying the most expensive model i've ever owned with the cheapest radio i've ever owned ;D

Pretty much decided to go with the X9D plus with an X8R rx for starters

Seems a good mid range option plus there are others in the club who have them who'll be able to help when my incompetence becomes a problem  :)

Thanks again all  :af

Its been a while since I experimented with these Dave but as I recall there is no damping adjustment, only tension.
