Best way to clean old nitro fuel off engines.
« on: April 15, 2012, 20:50:44 PM »
I've just bought a box of bits and engines, the engines are covered in old fuel, what is the best way to clean the engines.
Thanks.

One of the best ways is to place the engine parts in an old "Crock Pot" that is not used or will not be used for human cooking again.  These are the "slow cookers" you see here and there.  I got a small one from Walmart for about $10 US funds.  Fill three quarters of the way with automotive anti freeze solution.  Stew your parts over night in this witches brew.

Do not do this in the house, do it in the garage or outside somewhere.  The fumes are toxic, the fumes are not deadly poisonous but exposure can be a tricky thing depending ones lungs.  Be careful in disposal of the solution also for the same reason.

About an over night session will do it.   A longer time will result in discoloration, stains the Aluminum to a darker color.  I use an old tooth brush to do a final cleaning job.  Wash the parts in water, oil up and reassemble as necessary.  Bearings need to be carefully flushed out and lubricated to prevent any corrosion.

You can also use Dawn Pot Cleaner.  It takes more elbow grease but eventually will clean up the old Castor.

Be aware that the old Castor on the outside has no effect on the engines performance.  Cleaning will make the engines look better but . . .

If you don't have a dishwasher then a washing machine will work equally as well.  :af

I find soaking in petrol for a few days (safely locked away in a well ventilated space etc ...) is pretty effective.  Dope thinners and meths can also be used but cost more.  I have found each of these more or less effective on different engines.  Use an old toothbrush and bring it up like new.

As mentioned.
Fairy power spray.
coat the engine with it and place in a plastic bag to stop it drying out.
After a few hours rinse under the tap and all the gunk should just wash away. Will also remove any corrosion on the metal.

Lube the inside and away you go.

Fairy power spray worked for me :af :af :af
Depending on how thick the burn't on 'gunk' is, you may need a couple of applications.
