E.D Bee Mk11 Conrod needed
« on: July 23, 2018, 21:25:29 PM »
Hi all

About three years ago before moving house I bought this engine to reconnect with my ff youth and tickle my diesel (ether) scent receptors. It was on Ebay as spares or repairs and from the description I guessed it probably had a broken conrod.

I came across it again unpacking some stuff from my old shed, I stripped it and confirmed my diagnosis and also to my surprise found it to be in otherwise excellent condition with few marks and very clean.inside.

So; Please does anyone have a mk11 ED Bee conrod (or scrap engine perhaps) that they would part with either for money or swapsies for modelling goodies.

Ta
Brian

I know a man who may have one in his extensive stocks, so I'll ask him. Before I do can we just confirm it's the series II Bee and so the rod is a forged alloy one, not the series 1 which had a steel rod?

I ask this because ED used the therm "Mk<x>" rather strangely to denote the actual engine - so an ED B was officially called an "ED Mk1", where the 2cc longstroker was the "ED Mk2" and the 3.5cc Hunter was officially the "ED Mk3". So the ED Bee engine with the all-machined head (horizontal fins) and steel rod was the "ED Mk1 Series I" while the one with the pressure diecast allot head (with vertical fins) and alloy rod was the "ED Mk1 Series II".

If you can confirm which one it is I'll check with Eric to see if he has a spare rod. If he hasn't then it's not that hard a thing to make - you can actually make a rod for a low-performance engine using just a hacksaw, some files and a drill with a couple of reamers. It becomes easier  if you have a mill (even a little one like mine), but it's not essential. If Eric hasn't got one I can probably make you one if needed.

Peter, thank you for replying to my plea for help (again)

Is here no limit to your knowledge?; It's OK - I know the answer to that  :af.

It is the machined alloy rod and from what you say  it is indeed an  "ED Mk1 Series II"
As for making one, I did contemplate that however my efforts to remove the broken bits resulted in losing the bottom end section.  I know where it is - it is in my shed ! It must have camouflaged itself cos I am bu99ered if I can find it even though I swept up last month.

If Eric can help that's wonderful but before you whip the machining elves awake to manufacture one for me please  let me exhaust my searches first. I have a couple of distant friends who collect old diesel engines and am awaiting their response to my pleas.

Rgds
Brian

PS Wizza plan should be back with you early next week. - Thanks

Brian - are you still looking for a rod? If so I may have found one for you...

Hi Peter

Sorry for the delay in replying, it must be the heat, I keep nodding off.

YES, indeed I do still need the con rod please.

I did find the lower half after an exhaustive search (actually I saw something glinting on the floor and it was the half rod - pure luck). I would still be hesitant to make one myself as although I was reasonably competent with machine tools at school and Tech college I have not touched anything except a rather decrepit pillar drill since.

So who do I worship and what sacrificial offerings are required? ^-^

I know someone who thinks he has an original going spare (from either a mk2 Bee or a Cadet). I'll see what he wants for it and get back to you.
