RCV58-CD Gearing and internal FOD
« on: November 04, 2018, 16:09:03 PM »
Turned over the engine in my FlyBaby yesterday and noticed that the engine felt very rough as though turning a gear with a broken tooth.  Internal inspection found a small polypropylene disc about 1.5mm in diameter and 0.5mm thick but otherwise no obvious damage to the internal gearing. Possible the disc came from the internal bearings but unsure what may be the cause of the rough feel of the gears. Certainly my second RCV58 turns over freely with no trace of the gearing binding so wondering what the possible cause may be.  On re-assembling the engine the same gearing clash can be felt which gets worse as the compression increases. Any suggestions appreciated.

Might be worth giving Weston UK a call, this may be a problem they have seen before

Can you still buy these engines? I would like a RCV 130 but cannot find one anywhere on offer.
Sicher, kann ich fliegen!

My guess is the disc is a shim and the fact it's now not in place has affected the clearance between the gears

Told by Weston that the disc comes from the end of the pin that holds the cylinder onto the con-rod. Engine now on its way back to Weston UK for service.

Might be worth contacting Weston direct https://www.westonuk.co.uk/Contact/  to see if it is still available. They only list the 58 but say their website is under construction and doesn't yet list all the products.
