A while ago I had some aerosol based expanding foam (cant remember the brand) which I used to seal up the larder grate in my kitchen wall. It can be found in the usual DIY stores, is brown in colour and expands to a silly volume after being let out of the tin. Has anybody used this for filling voids in foam wings or any other modelling venture. I'm concerned that the 'squirty' expanding foam may interact with  the white foam wing material. Also I want to know what the adhesion qualities are like as I'm thinking of using it to stick the ABS wheel wells in the 109. Theres some voids that need to be filled but I dont want to add wieght and this stuff, if usable, would be ideal.
Anybody any ideas?

Hi Andy,
I've also read (over on SPAD.net I think) that the 'single pack' squirty foam will not cure properly in an enclosed space... I think it needs quite a bit of air/moisture for it to go off properly. One guy complained of having a (spad) wing leading edge full of sticky gunge :(

I do believe there is a two-pack type of expanding foam that will work anywhere but I haven't been able to find any yet.

HTH,
Steve

I've used it to mount air tanks in the nose of my jet. It works very well but once you let the genie out of the bottle it is difficult to control  :D It appears to cure ok in confimed space but you should check to see whether it attacks the foam.

Steve

I got some 2 part foam from Screwfix http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?ts=26142&id=49040 - I haven't had a chance to try it yet, so can't comment.

I used some of this in the rear fus  of a Howard Metcalf Moonraker (ABS) to support the snakes.  In expanding it cracked the fus.

Hi
I've used 2 pack buoyancy foam in the past for mending foam wings and filling glassfibre tailbooms.

Good results as you can use a teaspoon of each at a time but you don't have too much time to mix it and it expands quite a lot ...

Be careful as it sticks like porridge to a pussy cat...

From Deluxe Materials as I recall

 ;D

Give me the job and I'll finish the tools..

I hit an electric fence post on my Flair Cub many years ago, this put a 3" gouge in the leading edge of the wing.

I used the canned foam to fill the gap, the carved it back once set. Some light glass cloth over the area, and you would never know it was broken. For best results try a VERY light mist of water on the surface before use.

Unfortunately it is quite a bit heaver than the white foam its replacing, but as long as the area is small its not a problem.

There is a Gorilla glue that works in a similar way, ideal for holding hinges/tanks/carbon rods in wings - anything where you need a bit of flexibility rather that a solid fixing. Like the foam spray its a nightmare if you put too much onto a join. Like the spray foam a light mist of water gets the glue going...........who need expensive accelerators!!

I keep hearing many good things about this "Gorilla Glue" :af

Where can I get it from?

Mark.

Paint will not hide imperfections, it will just change their colour!

I use Titebond polyurethane glue, from AXMINSTER TOOLS

http://www.axminster.co.uk/product.asp?pf_id=22585&sfile=1&jump=0

Same sort of foaming stuff - with a little moisture ideal for filling dings in foamie models...

Mark,
Have a read of this previous thread for a slightly cheaper version from Wickes... http://rcmf.co.uk/4um/index.php/topic,13995.0.html
