32" span leccy Astro Hog
« on: January 25, 2013, 11:34:28 AM »
I've always loved this model.

I've never had a full-size, but once built the Boddo "Astro 40" for an OS .40 FS.

It flew beautifully with the "vintage" dihedral and I rarely used ailerons.

Hence this R/E version.

I blew the 3-view up as large as possible onto A4 and it came out at 16" span, hence the 32" model.

Aww cute!

I assume you are not replicating the original's complicated structure?

'Fraid so, but I've kept the tailplane standard. It's classic.

Instead of sheeting the  L/E I used riblets, 'cos I like 'em.  :)

Eh?  ;)

I think the colour scheme is going to depend on what I've got in the box.

The one I remember from way back was metallic pale blue (Jaguar) with pink nylon-covered wings. It looked beautiful.

It was flown on reeds by Rowly Craggs and belonged to George Coulbeck and was the first model I ever saw flying knife-edge.  :o

I'll bet slopdog remembers it too.  :)

Ooh! I've found some blue Solarfilm for the fuselage and also some translucent blue for the flying surfaces so you can see the structure through it.

Should be nice.

Rx and ESC ordered from Giant Shark, so we're not far off.  :)

That's really very nice  :af

A couple of questions:

1.  I thought we were only allowed 5 photos per post.  How do you manage to post more than that?

2.  What will you power it with?  I have a redundant Graupner Compact 160 7.2  1380 rpm/volt indoor motor.

ila_rendered

This produces a fair amount of thrust on a 7.5 x 4 Graupner slowfly prop and a 3s lipo.  I'd been wondering whether to sell it as indoor has died a death round here, but seeing your li'l Hog project has given me a few better ideas for things to do with it   ;D

Hi Gordon, thank you.

I'll look at the motor next time I go up to my balsa destroying room, I can't remember off hand.

As for the number of photos -  I just keep adding them in "Attachments and other options" and have never had any problems.

I really do like these smaller models and can't stop building them.

West Wings Cub, Fokker E111, Fokker Dr1 and now the baby Hog.

Finally started covering and  - yes - I did remember the U/C blocks.

But I forgot the wing mounting dowel.  :banghead:

At least I haven't got the top of the wing covered yet, so a bit of careful butchery is on the cards.  :''

I was going to try some VHS tape for the hinges, but found some thin Mylar ones.

Has anybody tried VHS tape? I slit a piece of 1/8" sq and slid a piece in with a dab of thin cyano and it won't budge in a million years.

Well, it's all over bar the shouting. (and the motor keeps coming loose!)  >:(

Thanks Mike, I'm really enjoying my building at the moment. It's certainly the weather for it!

Models this sort of size (30" - 36") certainly come together a lot quicker and, even including the power train, don't cost a lot.

Must get the Dr1 100% completed before I'm tempted to look through my 3-views.  :''

I've just found the perfect model here http://www.outerzone.co.uk/browse_plans/index.asp

I downloaded it as a vector .pdf and used this http://www.lucubration.com/pdf-tile-printer to tile it.

Doug McHard's free-flight Gladiator - 32" span

Just perfect for the next one and a helluva build.

Saved myself 7/6d too.
