Since you've already asked here...........you can't, as far as I know, select a single part of a longer post to quote just by clicking a button

What you can do instead is quote the whole post and then delete all the irrelevant text within the [ quote] tags.

For example (spaces should be removed, they're just for clarity in this post)...........

[quote ]This is the original long post[/quote ] will come out as:

Quote
This is the original long post

To split that original post you can either delete part of the contents like so.........

[quote ]This is the original[/quote ]

Quote
This is the original

........or split it in two by adding further quote tags

[quote ]This is the original[/quote ][quote ]long post[/quote ]

Quote
This is the original
Quote
long post

I hope that makes sense, sounds a bit long winded now I've typed it all out!

When you are making a post, there are 4 rows of buttons between the post you are making and the 'message icon' drop down box.

On the second row, third from the left you will see a little world symbol which says 'Insert Hyperlink' when you hover over it. Click that and you will first be prompted to enter the link address, and then the text which will appear in your post.

If you just type the link in the forum will automatically fetch the page title for you.

Tried that and got zilch. Four rows ? Eh ?

And this too, no go.

Take it from the very beginning. A posting has a question that I can answer as I know where the exact information required is located web wise, and I'd like to be a clever clogs by providing an actionable link to this web page to allow the query originator to just click onto it and----magic !
I'm nearly 69,( no urine extraction if you please) and feel lucky by just accessing the RCMF site without any hiccups and wondering why I'm at the site in the first place, ho hum  :banghead: So the procedure needs to be writ large and slow. Regards, K.G.

Cagey - just trying to work out what's going wrong!

OK - the first method (click on the little "globe" icon) doesn't quite work as stated if you're using the "Quick Reply" mode - which is something I setup by default.  But it does work as stated if I first click "Preview" and then continue writing my post.

Now the second method ought to just work! If you type (or much easier,  copy and paste!) a URL into your post then the forum software should make it into a link and replace the www etc. that you typed (or pasted) with the title of that page.

So, if I type
Code: [Select]
www.bbc.co.uk
into my post, then it should be replaced by a link to the beeb website.

I'll try it here;  BBC - Homepage and yes,  my www etc. gets replaced by a link using the text "BBC - Homepage"

Remember, up is up, and down is down.  Except when inverted - when down is up, and up can be very expensive

For Pheasants method (which is quicker and easier).......

Find the website which has the information on you are after. In your browser highlight the full address of the page, right click and copy.

Return to RCMF, reply to a post (or quote it, whatever you like), right click and paste. The link should appear in the posting window. The forum will sort the rest, all you need to do is provide it with a working address :af

Copy & paste - also useful to know the much underused keyboard short-cuts:-

Ctrl+c = Copy
Ctrl+v = Paste
Ctrl+a = Select all
Ctrl+x = Cut
Ctrl+z = undo

This is life changing knowledge for the uninitiated ;)

No, seriously Cagey - learn those,  or at least Ctl-C and Ctl-V to copy and paste.   Come back tomorrow, or next week, if need be,  but do learn them.  :af

It makes like SO much simpler.  I get totally exasperated watching people struggle to find copy/paste via menus,  or worse still,  read text off one application and type it (usually with errors!) into another... :banghead:

OK John, I have written them down and will try them for sure. The Wiz probably doesn't need dried frog pills ( yet ) so he must know these things. The right click, copy & paste has worked nicely for my posting re lecky V oil burners so well that as of yet I see no advantage in using a different method, but time will tell.

To the uninitiated can I pass on this which may help .
You see posts saying
Quote
or at least Ctl-C and Ctl-V to copy and paste.
know where you are coming from and can understand why you dont know Ctl-C and Ctl-v is .
Ctl is the key at the botom left of your keyboard , it says Ctrl . The -C or - V is simply a case of presing the Ctrl key and while holding it down pressing the C or V key .
I think people on here need to appreciate that others are not that up to speed on using a PC and all that it entails . That's from the top tier downwards !

I thought it was me being thick, Doh ! I do understand the hold Ctrl whilst pressing C etc. but from there it gets a tad iffy as to why and what for. Nil desperandum, we will crack it yet. Cheers.
Okay, hold the phone, gave it a go and bebu**ered if it didn't do the bizz. The bit that confused me was why a text file and where it's kept and how to access this at a later date. Don't understand the need for such procedures,  $%&
