Ok a quick one to start.  On the new ARTF  funfighters where and how are you mounting the receivers and battery packs?  Pics welcome.

Does this help extend to the old Cambrian range as well? I bought a FF Spitfire form E Bay last week, waiting for it to arrive now, will be building it for an OS32 SX.

thats the other lot, our kits are from the Cambria line and now ATS funfighters, not to be confused with the new ARTF's based on the Mustang but with many improvements

theres now a pretty big difference between ATS kits and theirs construction wise, theirs beings more dark ply, and blocks to sand. ( you'll know soon enough if it's Cambria or Cambrian )

i did have one years ago, flew well till i sold it and it got chopped in half at the next show.

no idea on the RX and battery mounting on the new ones, you'll have to ask "the boy" what he's done on his

I know you believe you understand what you think i said, but i am not sure you realise that what you think you heard is not what i meant.

I'm not completely sure whether the one I'm waiting for is Cambria or Cambrian, I'll find out soon enough, though.

got the Ebay link? if the inside is a dark thick die crunched ply it's Cambrain, if it's liteply with CNC formers it's ATS

MSP battery directly behind tank followed by reciver should do it but it depends on the size of battery you are using.

I'm sure you guys have tested a few motors & props on these mustangs, so, if ya want a realy fast ARTF version..Whats the best setup based on your findings regarding engine choice, exhaust & prop?

ignoring the West 50 you can't go wrong with a West 36 on the pipe and 9x7
after that your into Leo 37's, Magnum 36's on either 9x6 or 9x7 depending on how yours is pulling or if you've got a pipe
then OS32's on 9x6's

the West 36 was quicker than the 32-36's, but not by a huge amount, the 50 was the same, faster but not by a huge amount, it makes more difference in the climb.

i did see a glass one on a West 25, that equaled my West 36

Recently purchased a new J'en 37 for my Mini Roo, and am well impressed by it, especially hand starting after a flick or two.  I presume these would be good in the Mustangs?  Loved the race decals on display at W&W.  Very tempted.

i assume it'll fit in the ARTF's the OS32 does, on the kits you'll need to lenghten the cowl slightly.
the Leo 37 is what the team started with in all planes.
i'm still angry about them being dumped for that black pos engine

Finished a bit later than anticipated..........

I made a 3mm lite ply servo tray to fit under the cockpit, added some 1/4" triangle stock to the former and fuz sides and just glued the tray to that.  9g servo on the throttle (all that is needed), SD150 on the rudder (enough power for the little it gets used) and Hitec HS225MG 3.9 kgcm-1 on the elevator (and aileron).  700mAh AAA size KANs from overlander on the C of G, pushed back against the cockpit former and supported by bass wood bearers that are glued to the lip formed by the top of the fuz doubler.  JR Rx wedged in the rectangular hole ahead of the elevator servo wraped in foam.

Thanks for that Dizz.
I've gone with standard size servos in the tray as per the manual. I've got a 4AA flight pack that I will fit on the COG, using the same method as you.  Sorted my throttle linkage and painted the canopy last night.  All that's left is my favourite job (NOT) of fitting the cowl setting the COG and throws.
Cheers for taking the time to post the pic.

No problems Alan.  I was aiming to save weight for several reasons (speed and more speed!!!), hence the small size gear.

What performance are the built-up funfighters likely to have on an OS 30 four stroke?
I'm just looking for sport/club performance, not out and out screamers.
I have the motor and very much like the 4 stroke sound!
Thanks,  Sean.

sport and club you'll do fine with a 20-25 2sk, never seen a 4 in one

depends on the weight difference i guess

The club performance should be ok but do not expect much more from it. The weight could be an issue but careful placement of the radio gear should sort that, will probably be sluggish on launch also.

Definately going to get one of these when I've cleared my building backlog.  I spoke to come people in the tent at Weston Park.  Apparently you're all mostly using OS32SXs.  Are these the rear needle mounted ones?  Also are you using tuned pipes?

just mufflers
pipes gave them unequal performance with different engine and set up skills ans the team didn't stay together

the speed is more to make them look good from a distance which makes them seem slow and ponderous. any faster and people might be put off that they can't do club sport

i use a Leo 37 and Magnum 36

OS 32's are about £80 i think.  Not sure on the Weston 36 and pipe anyone know where one can be purchased?

Brid, if you are interested, I have a NIB OS 32 SX. Have an older Cambrian Fun Fighter Spitfire on its way for it, but can sell the kit on and sell the engine if interested.

Cheers for the offer Dave but I'm looking to the future a bit.  Will be 3 months I reakon before I can get my teeth stuck into one of these.  Got too many models been put off at the moment.

Brid, the offer will remain open until I either sell the engine or use it - let me know if you are interested later.

Phil - it was a bit of a hasty purchase (must stop using E Bay when drinking whisky!) and I have a fundamental dislike of 2 strokes. I got the 32 SX as part of deal.

Being given a complete Top Flite Spitfire to repair and fly also reduces my interest in the smaller one somewhat.

You may find the artf is too tail heavy with the pack in this position. I use a 2/3 AAA pack just behind the tank in mine and even there the front is a touch light on the loafers.
A standard AA pack in this position would be ideal I think.

I've done the balancing.  Like Daren said, it was a little tail heavy.  I've fixed an AA pack behind the tank and it sorted itself out nicely.  The instructions give a fair range of the cog and describe the handling characteristics of each (superb).  I'm airing on the cautious side with it at about 75mm for the maiden.  Just wish this dam rain and wind would pack it in :banghead:

Thats good MSP - don't forget i'm using small servos, so less weight required up the front to balance.

I got the Old Crow finished tonight.  If anyone out there is looking for a quality ARTF, look no further.  It went together really easily even for someone as ham fisted as me.  A flight report will follow in the next week, but for now, there should be a couple of pics below
