I have this Flair Dr-1 which flies rather well for it's 19lbs in weight! But it has been covered in Diatex, doped and then brush painted with Humbrol Satin enamels..  mmmm much too shiny and clean for my liking....

pai

How can I turn this into a right dirty little fokker please?

Do I matt varnish it? Do I scour it with wirewool? Shouls I overspray it with a mud wash? or all three?

All suggestions will be dwealt upon in depth....

I notice the original has streaks run vertically up the fus and across the wings, would this just be a dark wash of something?

try a ten year old tin of clear polyurethane silk finish varnish.  Turned my Baronette into a real dingy antique looking heap when I used it to proof the markings. Thin it down well and spray on a mist coat or two

flying's easy - it's getting it back down in one piece that's the hard part

The streaks run in the direction that the coloured dope was applied in on the original.......................to replicate, I'd apply a coloured 'wash'...............probably one a little darker in tone than the base colour to break up the solid effect of the colour....then a 'dirty' one over the top to add the muck and grime...............probably best applied quite coarsely with a cloth or sponge. Find out what base colour you have (cellulose, enamel etc...) then use a wash that won't pickle the underlying paint.......or if it's all too much grief to trial and error, use a waterbased WBC wash as this will go over anything with no effect. Follow this with a satin/matt clear coat.....job done.

don't forget to give the pilot a good washing due to all that cordite n stuff from those spandau guns (correct on the spandau???) - looking forward to seeing your results mate!
