Weather looks a bit poor. Anyone off out for a spot of soaking err, sloping?

It certainly looks like a day to stay local. A feisty SSW sounds perfect for Colley Hill.

Now where are my waterproofs...  :o  ;D

I lived in the US for 4 years - loved it and most of the people I met weren't the stereotype idiots most of the Brits take them for.  Again, happy days...

But my god..... those idiots do make up for the majority!! ;)

Same goes for idiot Brits IMHO!.....

I had a nice hours flying with my Luna today at Wrotham - great lift.  Anyone else get some flying in?

Also made a complicated fairing piece that goes below the wing for the Learjet and then glassed it.

Also started assembling my second hand Katana - I have too many models to fly now!

It was a good afternoon at Colley.  I arrived to find Alan (who was there with us last Sunday) and another 3 of our club members there - none of whom, as far as I'd been aware had ever set foot on a slope before...  Not quite right,  Richard had done some sloping about 15 years ago!

The rain held off and there was loads of lift.  Richard took Alan's DLG up inverted from low down to silly-high with not too much effort.  ;D  I only had the one flight,  but that was 65 minutes :''

A good afternoon was had here :)
We nearly went to Colley Hill but then I remembered Box Hill's SSW slope and we went there instead as I had not been to that one before.
Good lift and thermals were had and the Wildy 50 and Alula got a good airing. Mrs Leebert took some good video which I was going to edit with some on-board stuff from the Key fob cam but the file was corrupt somehow  :'( A bunch of camcorder clips are coming up though  including a seriously lucky touch (splot?) and go! :af
A rather pleasant and very relaxing afternoons flying :)

This was a good one though.
I thought I was gonna loose it but it settled and off I went. Just a bit of a **** that the key fob didn't work as it was supposed to be recording at that point.

I got one of those Parkzone Sukhois, good little things for windstill days.

Recently the bad weather got to me and I bought an E-flite Blade MCX micro helicopter, despite not being a heli guy.  That thing is great indoors.  My 10 yr old is having a ball with it, it's more successful than any plane I've got him.

Well it looks like yet another weekend that's been lost to this sodding Jaffa weather that we are having.
I just need to get out and have a fix of flying.

Ooooh so annoyed and the f3f Viking race is only weeks away and I'm feeling depressed through lack of practice. :(.

Really tempted to take some holiday off of work and have a mid week session.

Careful Gary - that's the beginning of the silippery slope... ;D

I wasn't "a heli guy" either until I tried a small leccy one a handful of years ago. :''

Paul, Ray and me  plus about six others from the London area were at Thurnham all day, apart from a couple of hours when my wife twisted my arm to go for a pub lunch. However it did fortify me for the afternoon!

Wind dropped off towards the end but had a good day's flying and nattering.

You were missed but we suspected suspected you would be at Wrotham, although I thought that field didn't re-open until March?

Eric

Too many models to list - If I did they'd take up the whole page!

Once the rain stopped this afternoon I popped out to try the "other" slope at Box Hill that I think Lee mentioned a week or two ago.  It's also on slopehunter.  There was only me flying - though another of our club members came along too.  The lift was nothing like as good as yesterday at Colley Hill, but it was good to get out and blow the cobwebs away!  And much more room for my dodgy landings too... :''

I'd have to get a lot more desperate before I went down the Heli road ;)

Unatural things defying gravity with no regard to aerodynamics just using brute force to stay aloft ! The polar opposite to gliders and soaring some might say.......

A lot of similarities with flying full house gliders though.  Needing to use all 4 main controls simultaneously is an advantage for both helis and gliders.  I do both and find them very complementary.  And the power, speed, handing and all round performance of modern helis is amazing.

I started out with full size gliders and got as far as the first rung on the instructor ladder but knocked it on the head as it became difficult fitting everything in and I was constantly thinking my students were plotting against me  :o
I then started on RC helis and love them but do find them a bit too focused at times. Then came sloping - much more relaxed :)
I still love the helis but just find sloping more relaxing and a better way to have a few hours without constantly thinking of the stresses of life.

On the subject of heli flyers and sloping,  did I mention I "found" another of our club heli flyers flying his Zagi at Colley yesterday - Steve C.  As DelUK said - you'd think helis and gliders would be complete opposites,  yet apparently not.  Or maybe it's that "oppositeness" that's the attraction.

Great vid Lee, I take it thats the main walk up you were flying on?  Looked like loads of lift, enough for something more substantial than the WT ?

I seriouslu need to get a slope fix... typical in that I am off all week and there is showing no SW!

Might have to take a drive up to Ivenhoe to see what thats all about.

I don't know the key fob cam but I do know USB devices.
Most USB devices are designed to be charged from the 5volt system on the USB socket.

Thanks for the comments Guys  :af  It was a good, fun flying sesh. While editing the video, I couldn't help myself but grin  :)

Jason: Yes, it's the main slope where the viewpoint is. The lift was good for the slope but turbulent at times low down. Probably due to the bushes and trees lower down.

I'm not sure a mouldie would go down well there - there were quite a few people wondering around. That and there are a lot of trees and the only place to land is on the slope might make it a bit tricky.
Whilst loading the car, I was approached by a National Trust Warden. He was concerned that the Wildthing was too big and would hurt if it hit someone. He was happy once I'd explained that I was a NT member and insured with the BMFA. Strange though, he seemed more placated that I was an NT member  $%&

Yep, Leebert, I've noticed the same thing, National Trust membership solves all issues on Trust land, much more than say a BMFA card.  All Wardens are told to be especially nice to Trust members, and have probably never heard of the BMFA or the National Trust's agreement with the BMFA or anything like that from head office.

Not sure, I've waved my card at them.  Plus my car has the sticker in it for free parking.

But I reckon saying confidently you're a member will work - after all, they're not interrogating you, just chatting in a friendly sort of way, so I can't imagine they'll demand ze evidence.

Now that most National Trust slopes charge £2 parking for non-members, and the discounted online membership is £27 or so, it might be worth considering membership for anyone flying regularly at a National Trust site.

In the summer I quite often have a quick lunchtime fly at Box Hill so it's worth it for me.
