Well started the repair on the Strega tonight.

CA'ed the loose stuff and then CA'ed some balsa sheet inside top and bottom butted to the rear aileron spar and then packed it a little bit with some scrap balsa.

Slid over the wing tip with some laminating epoxy and taped n weight it down about 2.5 hours work so far.

Hope it comes out straight LOL.  It might be a couple of mm longer when I take a look tomorrow evening as there was a fair gap of mashed carbon top and bottom!

I am a bit worried that I got carried away and didn't stop to think what I was doing so I am a little annoyed with myself that it might come out Carp!  Guess I'll have to wait till tomorrow now.

Woke up early so headed down the shed to check out the repair...

Looks straight...

Looks like it has grown a couple of mm as well...

I am sure the true straightness will become apparent when I take off the rest of the covering.... still need to do the leading edge for a good 600mm or so where that has come apart.

Aileron end to fin end gap looks a little too big, but I think I can live with that. I think the aileron might have been a little down so might look worse than it is.

I am certainly happier knowing the repair is nearly done and not as bad as I was worrying how it might have turned out... hard to tell what happens to the repair once you tape it up!

Just got back from Wrotham - I probably went too early as the wind is predicted to increase in strength later.

However, I did have about a 20 min flight with the Starlite/Hera when there was next to no wind - I was really impressed it managed to stay up so long so it should be great on a flat field.

Then John Smacky came up and I gave it another chuck and couldn't get it back up the slope so ended up landing at the bottom of the slope - no damage.

I rather like my new toy!

Thursday seems OK for me - it's swinging round to north for the weekend, so Minster Cliffs beckon.
Must dig out long johns, ski gear and tranny muff! . . .  and finish re-covering the WildThing.  :uk:

Si - when you fill your repairs, what filler are you using, just normal car body filler or something else?

Yes I sometimes just use normal 2 pack body filler Jason, but air drying cellulose filler is better for small imperfections as it is a lot finer and easier to put on thinly, mainly because it takes ages to set and gives you much longer working time.

There was a thread somewhere on here I think where a particular product was recommended available from a model shop - but I reckon it's the same stuff as I use (which was an automotive filler).

I need some filler as well as Simon's Starlite wing landed on the t-tail of my Kobra and that now needs some TLC with filler and paint.

Colin, If you need to check out the C of G positition it should be 70mm back from the wing leading edge.

If you'd like a copy of the instruction manual for the EGPro, let me know and I'll email it to you.

No, that would be quite difficult to use I think Col - the point of the cellulose filler is that it is paste like and air dries so you have plenty of working time.

My filler is about 30 years old so I doubt the name would be much use to you Jason!

Gents, can I ask for some of your advice, I have a Wild Thing turning up today or tomorrow and would like to know if there is anything not covered in the instructions or indeed any tips you can give me on the build please?

Looking forward to your replies, thanks.

The instructions are very good.  The centre of gravity is important - the range given in the instructions is spot on, so don't go behind that thinking the instructions must be over-conservative. Can't think of nuffink else...

I built (yet another) Wildthing a few weeks ago - exactly as the manual.
The CoG amazingly came out bang on target with a 4 cell NiMh battery pack in the nose, no extra lead needed.
Maidened it in 20mph+ wind and it flew dead straight hands off with no trimming required at all.
I had marked the CoG range on the bottom of the fuse, and taped a couple of grams of lead dead on the CoG as it was so windy. It also flew ok without the lead, but had better penetration with a little ballast when it was really howling.
The throws ( and neg expenential) work exactly as it says on the tin, but you can get away with even more aileron when used to it.
A great little model..................

Paul - yellow and black is the colour to have - that looks like a great plane can't wait to see it in the air.

RE: the WT build, it covers it in the instructions but make sure you use the wing beds when taping the wings with the cross weave tape.  You dont want to introduce any warp in teh wings by the application of tape.  Make sure you have some stuff to weigh down the wing with while your doing it.  Other than that enjoy :)
