this may seem strange to start a build thread with the finished articles but, hey ho, here are what this thread is all about....

Buzz, Steve Mitchell and Stueysheep each get a Fusion...

i would like to point out that i have in no way any connection with this supplier other than being an extremely satisfied customer, i now have a great model and have received great service along the way.

This all came about following a desire to get back into our monthly club competitions, immediate boredom set in whenever i spy a cougar, and feel there must be something better out there. I then found my club mate buzz had a part built Fusion which he hadn't got the time to finish. So i offered to finsish it off and use the learning to build me one too.

then along the way Steve Mitchell saw it, and decided to build one too.... Well i thought i had done well finishing mine in around two weeks start to finish, but steve capped that with starting on a saturday afternoon and maidening it on the Friday just six days later.... and that's with two days off... and we are only talking about spare time too..  :) :) :)

Build picture to follow over the next few days.....

:nananana: :nananana: not the one in the header no Alan...

Seeing the obvious advantages of electric power i went for the power pack as advised by Gavin at evolution and supplied by him too.... this will provide clean, smooth power with hesitation free response... and no engine cut due to prop strike on the touch and goes.... well the u/c should stop that anyway. at least the airframe won't get gloopy from glow...

it would be rude not to start straight away.... so on day one i spent two hours assembling the tail, and control surfaces. outlines pieces cut from the cnc balsa sheets and the infills from 3/16 by 3/8 strip.

i used the blue stencil as a square to make sure it all at 90 degrees

We are fans too.

At the clubs fun fly comp last sunday there were no less than 6 fusions, unfortunately I couldn't make it otherwise it would have been 7.

two fus sides are re-inforced with 1/16th ply doublers with lightening holes precut. here they are being pva'ed together. carefull they don't warp whilst it dries.... can of course use contact adhesive of epoxy if you wish.

do these look like two pengiuns chatting....

each fus side is then outlined with 3/8th triangle stock..

the front most piece is set back to allow the firewall to be inset later when the sides are stuck together..

.... i joined the fus sides together by attaching the servo mounts to one side by epoxy and then the other ensuring all is square along the way... i used supertec 2bb mg servos all round from moors models.... you can also see i have cut out the sing servo plates too. the holes are left for the builder as it will take standard size servos too

..... and here are the two sides drying.....

.....i found the wing dowels and rubber bands held the fus stright whilst the glue set.... the dowels were removed for gluing after covering.

i love the ribs, quite fragile and need handling with care at this stage before they have the ribbing capping strips attached...

The wing is soooo simple... Just lay down the lower spar, add the ribs, add the shear webs to get the correct gaps between the ribs, add top spar and uhupor glue...

Leave to dry and add leading edge and trailing edge...

whilst the ribs were drying i moved on with the fuselage... the top rear section is cut to shape already and give the correct taper and keeps the fus straight. still needs double checking though...

Once true, i added the bottom decking too and the front top deck....

Then a thorough sanding and trial fit the tailskid and rudder and stabiliser which interlock and glue together inside the fus....

The tail was not glued until after covering to make that job easier...  :af :af :af

here is the leading edge sheeting getting applied.... the front is glued to the leading edge first and allowed to set, then the remainder is curved and stuck using foam safe cyano... careful with weighting as too much could crush the ribs...

once all the leading edge and trailing edge sheeting is completed, the capping strips and central sheeting get glued on too.

Wow Stuey, you build quick, 5 hrs from bits to covering, faster than Steve M ;D

Has anyone tried this on 3S yet? I still rather fancy one but want to run 3S...

I dunno...

I have a 3s2200 pack I could try which may be a bit stretched. Could always prop it down to 44 amps at 11 volts would see about 480 watts... Considering I had a 10 minute flight on the 4s on Sunday and only used 1400mah..... then the 3s would be a good choice methinks...

Gavin's prototype was fine on a 3300 set up on 3S... Gavin, are you still on here for comment....  :'' :'' :'' :'' :''

alan,

Same motor thats going in my SU26. Barnseyboy runs his on 3s 2500. seems a similar size aircraft.

Have a look see if/when we next bump into each other at the field.

Hi,

The Fusion runs well on 3s, it can do everything the 4s setup can do, except the sustained vertical.  I actually designed the model for 3s to keep the cost affordable, its still a good competition model and I regularly use 3s 2200 pack for touch and go etc.

The 4s is really only gives extreme acceleration, the videos on my website of Mike williams flying the model are with the 3s 2200mah pack.

The tornado set-up with opto ESC using the programming card means that you can easily change from 3 to 4 cells - and I use a 14x7 for both set-ups!!

Gavin

yes...... tons.......... having so much fun with it i'm spending less time on the forum  ;D ;D ;D

it's also become the plane to beat now in our club competitions... the last two comps have both been won by fusions. Mine wasn't ready for the feb comp which buzz one with the green and clear one above, we had the march comp last sunday and buzz again took first and took second with my purple and white one above.   Beating all cougars well in to the lower rankings.  :nananana: :nananana: :nananana:

great, i'll buy that.  :af :af :af

i find this plane is both an animal and an angel. slow it up with huge movement and it's like a big precise shocky, great confidence rolling and cuban eights feet off the ground, but open the taps and switch in low rates and it'll scream around the sky and pull high g procedures.

for low rates i still keep the same travel but add bags of expo, so you still get reasonable smotthness but can get the extreme bite if you need it.

mixed flaps elevator is amazing, chewing it's tail off.

2200 4s pack gives twelve minutes of fun flying, or flat out around six minutes of competition time....

cofg is around 40% back and that is with 4oz of lead added, probably junk that and the ubec and add a seperate rx battery.

modifications i need to do are... cut off the rear motor shaft as it is sticking thru' the firewall. and give some thought to the battery installation. you have to take off the wings to disconnect the power, thinking of cutting a hole in the bottom to stick the plug out into the open for access.. Steve Mitchell and Buzz have both done this and it appears to work well..

Don't cut the shaft off, just purchase a different adapter, I told Steve Mitchell what to use.

Yes, a new model will be launched this season - a Sports/Aerobatic Bi-plane for 46-60 Glow or equivalent electric - just got the mammoth task of writing the instructions!!

given my experience on the fusion, it builds quicker than it takes to read the instructions.  ;D ;D
