Grass cut and Keiths been busy. Parts on the bench ready to put the wings together. Really do need a gear box and motor now.

Looking great, but have just one point. Are you going to brace the rear fuselage with cable or add timber diagonals?

Not sure yet but the real one is cable braced so .......................

Keith recons the ply top and bottom will be enough and the wings will fall of first anyway. ;D

Did you make your own plans for the BE2C? If so, what did you use for your info?

We now have a number for the BE2c its 1741. Why? because its intresting and Keith has pics of this one :). Keith makeing this one a replica of 1741 on the 6th Feb 1916 at farmbough. Where it was fitted with two expermental mountings for lewis guns. One facing reward and one on the port side of the cockpit. It late feb 1916 it went back to France and was written off in March.

This must be the slowest build thread ever  :)

Keiths been busy doing what, who knows, but he has built part of the wing and plonker pit is cut out. Centre section of the wing is also built and the incidence set to 4 degrees. He's still looking for a Zenoah Z62 if anyone has a second hand one.

Is there a prise for the slowest build  :) Engine now bought and in, tail plane finished and wings built but not covered.

Should be in the air next summer at this rate.

Keith the sheep I like that  ;D

He's a paint sprayer which is one reason he makes such good models. He paints quite a few for mags and shops as well as private customers .

The engine is an RCGF 50 Not what we wanted but the right price.  It will through a 24" prop

Lovely choice of A/C and coming on well, I look forward to seeing this in the air tho I have to say that with 50cc up front on direct drive you may well find it struggling a bit in any sort of headwind, there is a lot of drag to contend with and a 62 with reduction gear (especially the German set up) would more than fit the bill remembering it also throws round a very big prop.Expensive yes but so is the airframe and the time invested in reaching this stage. As I understand it the expected AUW will be 40lbs +(at this weight not an issue considering the wing area involved)  provided adequate thrust is available. Needs to be thought about as I notice from your posts that unit price of the power choice seems to be your main concerne but there is no substitute for adequate power. just a thought...regards Ken

I have to agree with Ken, the 50cc motor is going to be very marginal, its important with that amount of draggy wing to have some pull up front and the small prop on the 50cc IMHO just wont do it.... The Albatros has a 62 with the reduction unit and I think that is on the bottom limit in terms of climbing out power, its got over 50 sq ft of wing and lots of wire and without a little bit of reserve you could have problems........... Hi
I have to agree with you both but at least it makes it realistic.  :).  Another problem is the Zenoah wouldn't fit in the space and Keith wanted it to stay scale.

The std BE2C had 90hp and would struggle in a head wind. Could be an interesting first flight!

It could be a disastrous flight, I really hope not, but you need to ask yourselves is it worth risking the investment of time and money for the sake of a bit more power and maybe a smidge of engine sticking out?

I hope what ever you decide it goes well, tis looking very nice  :af

If a standard 62 wouldn't just fit then a MR Torquemaster 62 definately would and be ideal power. It'd be such a shame for your set up to be 'just not enough'

Stunning model that surely worth the right powerplant $%&

The 62 with the Reeves jobbie will definately fit in the space..... the tiny prop on the 50 will be struggling to haul this lovely aeroplane around, sell one of those dirt bikes and get some grunt up front..................... Jim

The third photo down on posting 46, I dont know if its an optical illusion thing or maybe my eyes but I have to say the upper wing c/s incidence looks a lot more than +4 degrees, more like 10  if taken from the upper fuselage longeron, agreed its difficult to be pedantic but assuming the longeron is parralell with the datum it does appear to be just so. This isnt meant to be critisism merely an observasion.    Ken

Judging by the second photo in post 46 Ken ... the incidence looks just about spot on..... Jim
The whole project is looking fantastic by the way, keep up the good work.................

Jim you are correct (as allways). Got to be my old eyes.Doesnt take away from the fact its a lovely build. To paraphrase idigbo "proudly squandering time and balsa since 1948" Ken

First off the engine This one has 5 hp, RAF1a engined BE2c had 90hp
Weight of this model should be 40lbs, weight of BE2C 2142lb
Power to weight ratio is much better on the model. If the oldies could do it, so can we :O) I do agree it would look better with a bigger prop or a 4 bladed one. Not sure what thrust out put of this 50cc is.

Wing incidence was going to be set between 3.5 and 4 degrees it was set up at
Top wing 4 degrees
Bottom wing 4 degrees

Optical illusion I think.

Is it finished yet? NO but I can tell you Keith is also making a a spad 7 at the same time.

Just looked at the pics and it does look wrong but then the fence post and building look like they are falling over.

I need to stop using my phone as a camera.

Spad seven. Third scale, Just over 8 ft span 6.1/2 ft long. A Demarcay built 57 series. It's a SPA124 Squadron.
