Getting withdrawal symptons after selling both my third scale Morane Saulnier and Sopwith Camel last year.

Had a great session with my quarter scale Fokker D7 (88"] today and thought this is a brilliant size for transporting, buidling and affording.

So, what would eligible for the dawn patrol and that at 1/3rd scale would be around 80" methinks..  A kind of "DWARF" Patrol.....

Whate do you think, any interest ..

I found four types that i must build one day, which i'll post here later for comment, interest and probably hilarity...

I think a Sopwith Dolphin would prob fit close at 3rd scale it was a small plane. there 1 or 2 others that would be  small I just cant remember them at the moment. I think theres one called a flea or something like that too

oh yes the flea, that's on my list of four... i just love it.

original was 20' 6" and in dwarf patrol size would be 82", AND WHAT A CUTIE..

oh, in German it's the DFW FLOH T28.

I must build this one day, but i will do one of the other four on my list this year first....

Here is candidate number 2.

the Sage Type 2.  described as a blackpool tram with wings....
at 22' 3" gives the largest of my options at 1/3rd scale, this would be 89" and almost the same as my beloved 1/4 d7...

ok, and next on my list of "choices", as provostguard, the "world is your lobster"  ;D ;D

The sopwith bee, an obvious choice as the dawn patrol is well supported by sopwith's and this would be the little baby.

not sure how the pilot fit's in, shaun 2.4g reckoned he either layed reclined in the fus, or was squashed up like a mark 1 mini... i reckon it was designed for douglas bader's dad.  ;D ;D

full size bee was 18 feet dead, we think.... so that would be just 72" at third scale..  :o :o :o

....and so what have i decided to do this year...

rather taken with this below..... but i'll keep yoi in suspence first...

at 19 feet full size, it was designed as an airship interceptor in 1917 and was fitted with a twin cylinder horizontally opposed 35hp robin engine...

being designed for a 45 hp twin, it struggled to get above 12,000ft, a bit of a problem really as the Zeps at the time cruised and opearted well above this...

only one was built and tested on the isle of grain in kent but judged not up for the job. ultimately it was boxed and shipped to the US in 1918, but it never arrived and lost for all time....

however, the americans mysteriously came with their version shortly after... conspiracay theory.... never..

so anyone see what it is yet........ :) :) :)

given the rarity of the subject i was gobsmacked to find a thoroughly detailed 1/10th scale plan drawn up by john sizer, available from SAMs...

Showing all the original structure that will also do for the 1/3rd scaler too.... only change will be around the firewall depending upon the engine needed.

Toying with a zenoah 26 if it will fit, or electric and sound generator if not.... :'' :''

.....and so here it is..

i've had the plans blown up to 1/3rd scale know and it looks a good size, and a good build, straightforward, and loads of fun...

the fuselage should look be straighforward, and in line with squareheads supercub wheels, these are huge too... . Well no suspension, in fact the flying wire rigging actually runs down the centre of the wheel axle...

i like the flat lower wing and dihedral on the upper, sort of opposite of the camel that i love.

and then the single gun on the top will look huge, and given loads of scale on the engine pots and metal front should look smashing, even if a little overawed, on the dawn patrol flightline...

That looks great! Is the colour picture a model from the plan you refer to? It doesn't look very accurate...

A fine choice if I may be permitted to say so. There is no doubt in my mind the guy who came up with the idea for a P.V.8 is a genius of the highest order. Well done Stu, I couldent have thought of a better choice myself.That Floh, well what can you say? truely a highly original quarted, also as there was ever only one of each built you have cornered the market .......UNLESS......there is something else out there we dont know about......Just before someone comes up with the Bleriot Penguin it doesnt count cos it couldent fly, it was never intended to.Go for it Sheepdip, Brilliant.....regards Ken  ;copper;

now, i am tempted by the penguin........ thought ken was joking onj the phone earlier bu apparenltly that great french ace rene fonck learnt to ground handle with one....

i think at 1/3rd scale, keep the weight down, and it will fly...

Go for it Stuey only it could be tricky finding a suitable ace based subject.

Has anyone got a copy of "Eastchurch Kitten Aces of World War 1"?  ;D
(Lucky the Ace bit isn't mandatory!)

This seems tio be built as a taxi plane, no plans exist and the models i have found have been mocked up from the photos and sketches....

Why. are you going for it?

It looks like only the Floh listed above saw action...

The Sage was out of date once it had been built, as the forward firing interupter gun had been developed and shown to have the tactical advantage... so why need a two up, stand up gunner type fighter

The Bee was a taxi mount.

And the Kitten could not reach the heights of it's intended targets... So whilst it was tested in an operational role it never saw action... Wonder how it would have gone if the 45hp engine irt was designed for was made available.

Any others out there guys, we need to get smaller than the Floh...

Stuey great minds think alike, I was chatting to a fellow aviator at our club at the weekend, and spoke of taking some smaller WWI over to play with on those summer days, and 'Dwarf Patrol' was a name I was contemplating.
