Well I picked up my 50cc Sukhoi from Global RC today :)

I know someone is doing a proper build thread on one of these somewhere, but I thought I would add a few pics of mine. My one is most definately being done on the cheap, but not too cheap that it will sacrifice its self ....

It was well packed, very pretty and seems well put together. The instructions are....erm, simple but as long as you have done a few before they should cover most the basic stuff. I do like the way it came it 2 mounting pattern templates for the engine fitting, even if niether of them do fit my JC Area 51 engine, lol, but good any anyway....

There is virtually no heatgun or iron needed on the covering, it seems to have travelled very well.

A test fit of all the parts weems very good, other than the elevator tube which will need some work as its tight into the elevators and the fuz, this could just be too much paint on the tube by the looks of things?

So here are a couple of pics from the box so far.....

As I do some more I will post some pics

Oh, the set up at this stage is likely to be the following:

Global RC Sukhoi SU26

JC Area 51 Engine

Global RC Pipe and header (If I can get it to fit)

Ailerons - Hitec HS-5645MG per wing

Elevator - Hitec HS-5985MG per elevator

Rudder - Hitec HS-5985MG

Receiver - Spectrum 9000

Ignition battery - 4.8V 2100Mh Nimh

RX batteries - Overlander 4500Mah Li-po X 2

Regulators - Castle Creations 10A variable voltage regulators (X2)

2 X Heavy dty RX switches

1 X Heavy duty Ignition switch

Oh, nice touch on the Servo arms that are included with the kit, pretty blue aluminium ones as show below, very cute!

Well, after a morning of finding bolts, washers, piaon wire, extension leads and who knows what else, I managed to sit down and do another few minutes work on her today.

So the update is, I got the servo's in the elevators, the blue ali arms on, the linkages done for the elevators, the elevtor hinges gued, the engine drilled and mounted, and the firewall cut out for the linkages and fuel pipe.

Here are some more pics of its progress:

Greasing the hinges so the Epoxy dont give me solid surfaces.....

Well here is some more.....

I got the canopy glued late last night and unvieled it this morning.

I got the wheels and spats on, as well as the tail wheel and bracket screwed on.

I managed to get both ailerons glued on today and may start work on the pipe tunnel later.

More pics for your viewing......

Its probably the picture but how strong/secure is the undercarriage fixing. Is it going to be strong enough? the angle of the picture makes it difficult to tell really.

Looking good and all top notch quality elsewhere so I expect it is. You're making good progress with this build.   :af

The U/C seems adequate, but I am going to put some triangle re-inforcement in it just to be sure :)

Well this is what I have cobbled together so far for it out of lite 3mm ply, so not much weight at all, just needs a bit of sanding down and the lid fixing on, think I might put some small blocks and screws for the lid just incase i need to take it off at any point, lol

that looks a well built ARFT, more of an assembly thread than a build thread though  :''

What's the total cost as I see you are trying to do it as cheap as possible without compromising safety?

Looks a really nice kit, well thought out and light. Just building my first 50cc 3d machine. I like the fact you have boxed in the exhaust can, mine isn't but should you not let the air flow over it to keep it cool?

Usually they are boxed in from factory, but the box on this on was a few inches shorter than I needed.

Despite building a box extention, I cut 4 holes around it so that the prop thrust will still travel the entire length of the box and keep it cool as best it can when the canister is that hidden away anyway...lol  ;D

OK, approx costs

Global RC Sukhoi SU26 approx £319

JC Area 51 Engine approx £270

Global RC Pipe and header approx £90

Ailerons - Hitec HS-5645MG per wing Approx £35 each

Elevator - Hitec HS-5985MG per elevator Approx £41 each

Rudder - Hitec HS-5985MG approx £41

Receiver - Spectrum ar9000 (Can use ar7000) approx £80 or approx £55

Ignition battery - 4.8V 2100Mh Nimh £5

RX batteries - Overlander 4500Mah Li-po X 2 £30 each

Regulators - Castle Creations 10A variable voltage regulators (X2) Approx £18 each

2 X Heavy dty RX switches Approx £5 each

1 X Heavy duty Ignition switch Approx £5

I have put approx on each of these as it depends where you shop for them, and I already had batteries, switches and some of the servos already. Deals are obviously available from sellers depending how much your buying, if your picking up or having it posted out and I did not pay the the exact prices as above.

Note, I am not in league with global RC, nor Gashanger, nor Hitec, in fact not anyone, just a regular club flyer like most of us :)

Managed to do another bit, got the rudder all glued in, cables in, linkages on and all connected and tested.

If someone else wants to do one of these, there is no need to use the outer holes on the extended arm they give you as I had to rate it down to stop the rudder banging, so a bit of work now needed to get the throws right mechanically now so I can take the EPA's off, lol.

Well thats the back end done now. Wings I can't do till next weekend, so might have a crack at the fuel tank later :)

Well it depends on what your comparing it with I supppose....

Example...

EF Yak ....£600

DA 50 ..... £420

ES Pipe ..... £220

Header ..... £50

JR DS8911 £132 X 5 = £660

Spectrum Ar9100  ....£120

2 x Spectrum Regs .... £50 X 2 = £100

Etc etc etc, batteries, blah blah...

So yes, cheap for a 50cc model with a canister......

And yes, there is padding between the tank and the mount, and the ignition system and the motor box :)

in the picture of the  servo with the big arm on,  the servo screws are not installed,  the ferrules are inverted,  this will drive them into the wood,     eventually, they will loosen,    the idea is to have the ferrule flange on the bottom, top hat style, and use the screw with a washer either built in, or separate,  at all times the grommet should be clamped,  trapping the servo in a sort of soft mount,          apologies with the suck eggs thing,  hope you dont mind :)

Thanks Alan, I don't mind at all, I have always put them on the wrong way it would appear for years, never had any bad effects as yet, but at least I know now and can change it all for the future :)

Thats the great thing about doing it this way, if I get something wrong someone can point it out for me and I can learn  ;D

hx5010 x7 - $53 posted (£37 ish for all 7) 2 on each wing 1 each elevator and 1 throttle

£635... just over half the cost of yours.... :D

sadly the edge died when the engine quit in the wrong place at the wrong time, soo will be replaced with a global rc yak 54 :) (my fault for not tweeking the carb for the new oil mixture)

SteveS,

I have the old Global Yak and the costs you quoted are about right for a decent build. I am going to buy the new version and will follow a very similar spec to yours although I remain to be convinced of the benefits of Lipo flight packs and regulators on Rx and ignition.  I am waiting for the high voltage servos to arrive, then the radio can run on 7.4v direct.  My build will use Sub C and AA cells with savox servos.

My budget is about £1100, thats £300 for airframe,£400 for engine and accessories and another £400 for radio gear.

I looked at an Ef yak which was £500 without tank or wheels (another £30) while a pipe and header could be built into the price for another £250 or so.  a set of reccomended radio gear with Lipos and regulators etc was another £700 or so. With decent quality gear and a few of the derigeur bling bling items like carbon spinners, Alli servo arms and a carbon prop the high spec 50cc models can cost close to £2000 ready to fly.   You can save a few quid here and there by using cheap chinese servo's ( that from experience dont centre well and stop working at the most inappropriate times) but its a false economy.

Look forward to seeing a bit more of your build. :af

Well after shopping and stuff this moring, I managed to make a quick start this afternoon.

So far I managed to make some thicker ali support plates to replace the original ones, you will see they are sustantially ticker than they were, these are fitted already, some careful drilling of plates and 4 extra holes in the side of the plane was required, but i will patch that later.

Then i made some ply doublers to go all around the original U/C mounts, I have included pictrues of these.

Managed to get my batteries in tonight and all the wiring done on it too, all be it a tad untidy, lol
Also managed to put in an SM Servies ignition cut off as well, thought it might prove useful, lol :)

Main thing is......

ITS READY FOR MAIDEN

Sorry to see that, it's so gutting when you loose such a nice model. I lost a ZN Line Majestic on its second flight a few years back, fantastic model and cost a fortune compared to others. Still not sure what went wrong but there was nothing left. The engine was in about 3 parts and not a single servo survived.

It half looks like it went into failsafe, what had you set the surfaces to do in failsafe mode?

I was forunate, the engine and canister survived, as well as all the radio except the choke servo which was just a Futaba 3001 anyway, so no big loss, just the airframe that didnt make it.

Here is the airframe

And here we are srying off after walking in the field with the plane being cremated

All is not lost, it was replaced with this

And at least this one had a landing....lol

Not sure about interference, think that was just me shaking on the sticks, lol.  ;D

In flight it didn't feel like it had any interference, felt very locked and solid right up until the point where it went in. It wasn't signal failure as the engine would have gone to tickover as the failsafe was checked to be working a few mins before.
It also wasn't radio in the fact that all surfaces except throttle were set to hold, and it felt like something "kicked in" when it went.

Very strange one this one, I never like it when I can't explain it, I prefer to be able to say....it was XXXXXX and then at least you know for next time and learn by it.  :)
