I'd best stop spamming hubbies thread - people will be thinking there is serious progress occurring with all these extra posts!  :''

The new baby shouldn't be too much of a problem - you can always put her in a baby bouncer in the corner of the workshop while you're sanding the meteor's planking. Also if the top of a tube of expoxy gets all gummed up and stuck you could give it to the baby to chew and the top will come free in a few minutes.

Good idea Pete. If she's any good with the epoxy she can unblock the CA nozzles too...

I got a whopping 2 planks on tonight before those two words which every child (actual or overgrown) dreads: "Dinner's Ready"

Maybe more later. Anyway, I wanted to try it back on the wing after de-jigging it.

Possibly... It really depends on this MSc I'm also doing. It really is chewing up a lot of time. The irritating thing is that I haven't learned a scrap of information from it yet. I just spend hours and hours reading academic garbage looking for someone with the correct view of the world to use as a reference. What I end up writing isn't my true view at all, it's what I can justify with references.

I don't have a particularly high opinion of this sort of academia and really wish I hadn't started it!

Hi Jamie,
I recognise the sentiment - been there!  The blue waters of your own pure thoughts are PhD territory - first though you get to wade through the thoughts of others!  What is your MSc?

It's Project Management. I work in project controls at the moment and earlier in the year my manager suggested that if I wanted to sit in the driving seat then the MSc wouldn't hurt. Unfortunately I was in one of those really irksome good moods that happen occassionally and it sounded like a great idea at the time!  ;D

Having it certainly won't, getting it probably will ;)  To what discipline will you be applying this?  Working, studying and holding down a full time hobby is never easy..!
(I think that's round the right way!) By the way, (you've probably answered this already) what thickness balsa are you planking the fuselage with?

Hi Paul,

It's 3/32 softish balsa in 1/2inch strips with diagonal splice alternated at front and back. (I only know this as I had to go buy the 3/32 from our local model shop since hubby works most shop opening hours! lol)

Haha  ;D Apparently I'm one of very few swmbo's who incourage this hobby! I'd rather he did this than became some larger drinking plonker who is obsessed with football and spends zero time with his missus!

(plus every hundred quid he gets on modelling supplies = hundred quid I get for my own enjoyment!)

Hi Gill,
Thanks for the info - 3/32 leaves just a little to sand away!  I am pleased to be able to say that you are not the only modelling wife - here, Sara operates from the same pages of the manual as you appear to do - so both Jamie and I are well blessed..!

Right, I've been up to my neck in this uni course, but I've managed to crunch through a few bits so I treated myself to an hour in the shed, following a couple of hours last Sunday.

The fuselage is now 3/4 planked. The bottom of the rear half of the fuselage is still to be done. As the belly in front of the wing is substantially flat, I sheeted that in one piece of medium 3/32" balsa. I also edged the battery hatch from the inside before I did so with hard 1/4" sq and marked it on the other side. All it needs afterwards now is the lines sawn through and the hatch will be free.

I sellotaped the ends of the hatch edging to prevent me gluing the edging to the fuselage formers fore and aft.

This is the fuselage after a very rough sand. The cheeks are going to need a little filler to make good but overall it's not turned out too bad. It's much lighter than the wing. I haven't actually weighed it yet but a 3.5kg AUW may still be possible  :xx

Now some might say that planking is tedious and boring.

I, however, possess the solution!

If suffering from fatigue from planking, what you really need is a deadline. No, not a modelling deadline. What you need is a work or education related deadline. Compared to that, doing planking just seems so much fun and carries a hefty attraction!

I've got to do some uni stuff this weekend though. A 2500 word assignment reflecting on what I've learned and how the course could be improved is due on the 18th. That'll be 100 words for the first section and 2,400 discussing the course's shortcomings and how best to improve it!

Here's the battery hatch cut open:

And some more planking  :D

Last bit for tonight (got to do some of this coursework and the glue used for planking needs to dry).

The rear fuselage planking is all on. I can't really call it complete until the glue is dry, it's sanded and I get to see what I've got.

Tailplane and fin next, in that order probably...
