Lots of large WW1 planes, what can a man want more?

How about one less wing and more guns for use against those who still have two wings :''

Nah, only joking :ev :ev :ev

If the mass take off was because there was no wind and you could therefore take off straight into what little wind there was how come two of the planes in one of the photos have there wing tips on the ground $%&

Ok, going to put my big wooden stirring spoon down now :-*

I can answer this seeing as one of the planes with a wing down was mine......

Not all the aircraft accelerate at the same speed from stationary - different weights, engine sizes etc.
Also WW1 stuff has varying tendencies to 'swing' on take off -Look at Mat DVI for example - its got a tiny fin and rudder which is blanked by the huge fus - its a git on the ground - same as the full size.
Therefore as aircraft accelerated away and inadvertantly changed direction, it became necessary for those behind to take off and immediately veer off to one side.

Sunday was the first time a lot of the team had flown together - let alone attempt a take off in a line abreast wing tip to wing tip....

All I will say is its the first time I've heard a rapturous round of applause for a take off at any show...

As for Ian's Camel having a wing tip down...well - He's just pants!! :nananana:

Seriously though - me and Ian are using Z38 engines with the Toni Clarke reduction drive turning 32x18 props so although we have only just cleared the ground the a/c are at point where full manoeverability is possible due to the huge waft over the surfaces from the prop.

I hope someone has some video of it cos I would love to see the full effect - I was concentrating on the 3 a/c around me so couldnt see it clear enough.

I can understand the mass take off being a bit difficult for the above reasons, so why not try a two stage take off.........Brits first, persued by the German's once they get a sniff of the Brits. I'm sure that would go down equally well with the spectators :)

Sounds like a really good idea Walts -

W are at early stages re fying in formation - The a/c have a wide variation in speed, agility and response.

We need to be able to walk before we can run so mock battles are something we have discussed for the future.

Sunday saw us mastering (almost) circuits, fig 8's, low passes and mass touch and go's.
Its quite an eye opener just how much communication goes on when just one a/c gets a bit behind the rest  - the last thing we want is mid-airs during the crossover on a fig 8........

The last flight on Sunday saw 4/5 of us trying a simple aerobatic style routine with simultaneous stall turns, wingovers, loops at spread intervals along the flightline and at either end of the strip. That worked well too.

We genuinely appreciate all feedback positive or negative on what the public wants to see.

Early days for us though - the team is set to get much bigger and new a/c kits have been delivered that should be ready for next year.

Make sure you are at Cosford in a few weeks - we have planned for a lot of a/c in various degrees of flight readiness to in-build. Its also a nice big site that will allow us to get more a/c in the air at once.

 :xx

Hi Jez,

One minor point & this is from a photographic point of view. When doing figure of 8's offset the cross over point ie make the cross over point 40-50 ft either side of the pilots box. Why? Because the photographer will get a better picture instead of the underneath of the model. A nice curving turn with the model slightly banked always looks better. Also, cutting the corner from medium height using a shallow dive to do a low level pass looks really good too. I know this'll pain one or two ::) but Ian, of the Redshaw, does this manoeuvre very well. That's why there are quite a few good pics of his Camel (so Walts isn't confused ::) ) Mat does a good job with his DVI, too!

The above sequence of pictures show what I mean.

TTFN,
Neil

Sorry mate - they're all in sequence - the only one that's missing, because it wasn't properly in focus, is what should've been the 5th one. I shot the sequence in low speed continuous. The spread is over about 2-3 seconds - believe it or not :)

Yes - he does this manoeuver very well - then again we all have to practise it a lot to catch up with Mat's DVI..... :ev

Seriously though - thanks for the input. I hadnt really thought much about positioning with photographers in mind so I guess more banking, descending manoeuvers towards the flightline are in order.
Fig 8's and tight circles up one end or t'other with the a/c towards rather than away from the f/l..

Hi Jez,

Yep, good steep climbing turns can also look quite dramatic, too.

We also need (IMHO) to try and use all the flight line, long runs up the near side flight line so all the crowd get a butchers.

Agreed..................what was done at DX was good for that site as the 'crowd line' was so small (wind direction at times also didn't help) For shows like Cosford with it's extensive line, charging around in the middle isn't much to watch for those at either end....

The 'climbing/descending' turn suggestion is Ok as long as everyone is talking from the same sheet.......this can be problematic and dangerous if some do it and some don't......

Cosford should see more models airborne, so I'd say 'more of the same'.......nowt different, just get used to the numbers in a safe and relatively organised way. Standing behind the pilots box at DX, I did hear a few comments from 'slightly stressed' pilots during the slots......so just keep doing the same until everyone is comfortable.

Phil
