A mate of mine works in the Taphouse he also teaches surfing at ST Agnes - he used to fly when he was up north but probably doesnt know anyone who flies down there is there a club or something I could tell him about or is it all ad hoc?

JJ

The strongest "official" link for flying at St.Agnes is with the Redruth MFC. However, the St.Agnes regulars are on here (check out the Proper Cornish Slopers thread in the regional section of gliding), and there's also a website dedicated to sloping in West Cornwall - check out Proper Cornish Slopers. A really great bunch of boyos!

Video of Cliffhanger (Segway), Myself (M60) and Andrewmawr (Weasel Evo) flying at the Bwlch yesterday. Filmed on a FlipHD by Andy.
Very light conditions for most of the day.
Enjoy

You cant beat a good bit of light air action, I love the super smoothness.... I could have guessed that was Cliffs Segway just by the underside colours.... very him!

Also good to see some vid from a FlipHD.... I'm in the process of deciding on a new camera and wondered what these cheaper HD fix lense jobbies are like for our needs.

Cheers Mike, I'm now looking at a proper dedicated HD camcorder with decent a lense and optical zoom but its looking like I'm going to have to wait a will for the prices to fall a little as a decent one is currently out of my pricet range.

I have been tempted by the non HD SONY DCR-SX30, it gets good reviews and has reduced in price a lot recently...

I've got all the video editing software you could ever need :), top end stuff like Adobe Premiere pro (used by pro film makers) and  Sony Vegas pro (again pretty pro software), my aim this year is to get a decent camera and properly get to grips with the software to hopefully produce some decent vids.

I got some light air out, a Blaster 2 and the old cameras charged so its time to get some more footage to play with :)

I held the Flip at arms length and had two 'see-through' Flips framing the aircraft. Bit like looking at a 3D image thing that you have to go crosseyed. Found it easier than a viewfinder. Might be just me though $%&
I have no idea about  software for it, Andrewmawr's should.

I've used my Samsung NV24HD compact camera, on a head band to film quite a few vids.
It records on HD720p . The quality is pretty good as shown:
Weasel evo maiden on Vimeo

They've come down in price and you can get them on the net ~£140.

I also use a Sanyo Xacti HD700, again 720p HD, and gives good vid results. Going these days from ~£135

Hi Steve,

I use the Sanyo only outdoors but it seems to perform fine, I strap it on the side of me 'ead and away to go!

I edit with Adobe Premier Light which came with the Sanyo, and then encode to AVI using XviD4PSP (free download)
Two recent vids with the Sanyo which I'm sure you've seen before are:
Speedo Thermo- Acro? on Vimeo

Luna Mission on Vimeo

The 5x optical zoom is more than I need for general filming of flying, it's got the option of 12x digi zoom.
One good thing is that it has manual infinity focus so no blurry bits.
I reckon good value now unless you want to go on 1080p

Have been looking at some HD cameras myself. Like you Steve i'm prepared to wait for a decent model as I just can't justify a good Sony HD just to sit in my "flight" bag waiting for the odd outing.
Am i correct in thinking that a "high" optical zoom is the thing to go for? Also, my intention would be to upload the vids to Youtube or Vimeo. Would it matter one ounce if the kit i used was 1080 or a lesser HD?

If you just wonna film flying I doubt you'd need much of a zoom, but I like to mess around with the scenery and other filling shots where a cracking zoom can come in handy.

Hey Pasty- this is what Ive been waiting for- due out soon.
Very lightweight (good for head cam'ing) full HD 1080p, 9x optical zoom.
http://thecoolgadgets.com/sanyo-xacti-vpc-cs1-full-hd-digital-camcorder/

Looks the biz for me anyway, but price?? They tout $300 so could be £220??

Hello Boys! On the subject of cheapish HD cameras, I've got a Toshiba Camileo HD Pro. I've used it a lot for Paragliding and in my sailplane with reasonable results. On the plus side, it's cheap sub £100, battery life is good, it's small and you can stick in loads of SD memory in (mine has 16Gb). On the down side, the features are few and the zoom isn't great.
If you want to take it to Cornwall..........

After much umming and erring and wondering whether I should wait or just get something now to tide me over I’ve finally pressed the buy button.

After you put me on the Sanyo range Cliff I came across the Sanyo Xacti VPC-CG10, reviews seem good for what I’m after, I was a little put off by the 30fps at 720p but after watching your vids I hope it wont be a problem.

One thing I didn’t check was whether I could manually set the focus to infinity but seeing as its a later version to yours I’d be very surprised if it didn’t have that option.

My plan is to use this in combo with my current standard def camera for this year then upgrade to higher def once that part of the market has a few more options and comes down in price.

I’ll let you know how I get on with it and post some vid once I’ve got something decent.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve- Hey, good price for camera similar to my older 7 mp Sanyo Xacti.
Looked up the spec. and it states focus is both automatic and manual, which will allow you to fix it at infinity, as you thought.

The only thing I'd say (not to be too negative) is that both Vimeo and Utube (allegedly) now support 1080p video.
So maybe in a year or so 720p vids might look a bit "old hat"
However 720p quality is still pretty good even on full screen playback.
And as you say in a year's time the price will have come down on compact 1080p videocams.

Its purely a stop gap camera until 1080p becomes more available without having to pay through the nose... messing with video is just a bit of fun on the side after all.

anythings better than the old thing I'm using at the moment! I'm so tired of messing with mini dv tapes and pulling stuff off the camera old school stylee.

I really liked the idea of being able to strap the Xacti straight to the side of my head too, no messing around with making a special head bracket or the like.

I woulda like the xacti 2000 but 300 nickers is way too much for a sub hobby... thats mouldie money!

A short vid of me messing around on Saturday morning, I would have liked it to be less rough with more variation but I broke the fish after getting a short amount of video with not enough camera angles so had little to work with...

I fixed the fish in the afternoon and headed back down with a mate to get some free hand camera footage but the wind had dropped  >:(

I was going to keep it in my records only as I used it as test film for some new editing software but thought I might as well put it out there.
