I put 2700 Sanyo NiMh's in both mine when Inwoods had them on special offer, last for ages.

It's a hard life - but better than the alternative.

I've got 2100 mA Vapextec 'Instants' in mine. I get 6 hours plus per charge and it barely discharges when not in use. Good value at £10.85.

What will you be chargingthem with? If your charger is the usual 70mA wall-wart then anything above about 1500mAh will be completely wrecked within the first year. If you have the ability to charge at over 200mA then go for something larger, but only if you can.

Also be advised that the most of the NiMH batteries give very poor performance at low temps (below 5degC), so if you routinely fly in icy weather through the winter (rather than supping hot toddies and wrapping yourself in hot totty like sensible people) you should choose your batteries with care. Decent batteries will have a specification sheet that advises on low-temperature performance.

HI

I to have the vapextech 2400Mah in mine its very good.

Don't see why a 70ma charger should ruin it as long as you don't overcharge? a full charge from flat for a 1500 would be about 30 hours.

Charging NiMH cells at very low rates causes them to degrade over time - unless at least one charge in about every 4 or 5 is done at a rate of at least C/10 their capacity progressively drops, and the high capacity (sponge electrode) cells seem to be more sensitive to the problem than the lower capacity (foil electrode) ones. This effect has been observed by many, many people who replaced 500mAh nicad Tx packs with 2000-2500mAh NiMH cells but continued to use the same charger.

I've just renewed my old Tx NiCd pack with a 2000mAh NiMH pack

Will charging it permanently at C/10 do any damage?

C/10 is fine, although some recommend one in five or ten charges at C/2 (or even C/1) to keep the cells in best condition.

I'd say it depends whether we're talking about a peak detecting charge, or a trickle charge.

If you're peak detecting, then fine.

However if we're talking about trickle charging (and especially if this will continue when the pack is fully charged) then be careful.  NiMHs and nicads are different beasties, just because a nicad pack was fine being trickle charged at C/10 indefinately, that doesn't mean that a NiMH pack will also survive this abuse undamaged (its not a case of "if the plug fits, it must be fine").

In my experience, the biggest clue with a NiMH is its temperature.
If its cool (or warm) then fine, but if its getting hot to the touch, it really isn't happy.

Good practice is of course to cycle the pack from time to time, with a load current close to normal operation, and record what you get out of the pack, when its been fully charged.  "Abused" NiMH packs can show a huge drop in capacity, and once damaged like that I've never had a pack recover through gentle cycling.
