Where in Yorkshire did the sloping daddy of 'em all, the late Dave Hughes fly?

I think he used to visit relatives & fly at Saltburn by the Sea.

He used to attend our (SSA) two-day comps every year at Bradwell Edge & Ringinglow and also used to drop in on a Sunday from time to time. I think he did the Jordanthorpe  thermal comps too, not sure as thermalling wasnt my cuppa tea. This is going back some years though...

Nice to see the Callow Bank photo, I must get up there sometime this summer, especially good to see a Graupner Amigo.
I still have one from 35 years ago and have flown it many a time at Callow, but will be subject to a full refurb before I take it there again.

That ones not mine, thats me on the right and with the kipper at Tinkers - but my 'lightweight' in those days for windless days was an Amigo with 4 channel reeds ... dont get me started on the good old daze again...

35 years ago I would almost certainly have been there, we used to spend every spare moment on the slope then.
Maybe you remember Stuart Ward, Pete Malinder, Neil "Batweed" Johnson, Stan Groves, Phil Scaife, Paul Mcandlish, Dave Hill, Graham & Nicky Freeston, Terry Gregory, Ken Emmett and my dad "Adge" in whose camper van a dozen or more flyers would cram, hiding from the rain supping tea & eating mums current cake... good old daze... Aaaarrrrggh here we go again....

A few of those names are familiar but I particularly remember Graham Freeston, a genuinely nice bloke who always seemed to be helping others learn to fly as I recall.
I probably joined SSA first time round about 25 years ago as I was originaly a member of the River Don MAC, an offshot of the steelworks social club and we flew at Concord Park in Sheffield.
When I joined SSA the people I recall are the likes of Bernard Henwood, Alan Cooper, Fozzie, Martyn Johnson and a couple of others who might still be members, Richard Hardwick and Tim Scowcroft.
I re-joined last year and have been attending the Winter indoor sessions at Sheff Uni so if you've been I've probably seen you.
Amigo is now officially on the cards to be resurrected, there's also a new Mk3 available, quite expensive compared to some of the stuff now aon offer, but I recall the original Amigo wasn't cheap as such, great kit though, using about six pieces of balsa where one would do, still have the original plans and box if you want a copy.

Any Huddersfield lads there, if so what pylon events will you be running this/next year.
I know there's the EPP60, (cos I was there yesterday) but what others do you do. It might be nice to give it a bash at club level first.
Is there a 31" class and what would I be able to fly. Is it an all foam class so maybe I could use a Multiplex Fox or Graupner Mini Discuss...or am I way off the mark

15th nov should be ok for me, just hope we don't get monster winds as we did at the cancelled meet.
I've got my Zagi (or cannon fodder as someone called it!!) so I'm ok for a model, albeit a bit slow, but is the model you were referring to Tim a spare one for sale, or just for me to crash, sorry borrow and carefully fly?

I have a couple of old planks that I could let you have without gear for not a lot.

But if you wanted me to leave the servos in I would be looking to recover their cost...

As with batteries and RXs.

It would almost be easier to cut you a new one....

Tinkers Today, 60" epp slope racing....twas a great day for November...weather was  kind, wind/lift good, great crowd of guys Why can't we have more days like today.
S'pose we can...all you other guys out there in yorkshire, why not come an fly with us on one of the best slopes in West Yorkshire....you just need to ask.... an providing you got BMFA insurance, we can put you in the book...then take a fiver off you

I've asked on two occasions unsuccessfully, maybe its me but I kinda got the impression that visitors were to be discouraged...  
I fully understand the position with the landowner so its ok (used to fly there decades ago, the situation was the same back then), I'm not complaining or anything...  quite content down at ponty park

Yep, shame you didn't make it - it was one of those days that just went "right".

And after the weather we'vev had lately it was great to get some proper flying in again.

I think Buster enjoyed himself, and I think he had his eyes opened a little too.....

I drive for a local Undertaker and was in Stocksbridge this afternoon - guess thats kind of close to Sheffield, although I know Sheffield is a big place...

Accurately described to me recently as "an aweful picture, in a beautiful frame"...

No rush fro me either, I was just trying to drum up a bit more interest in the event.

I'm thinking I need the avionics from at least 1 if not 2 of my oldies (both of which will absolutely spank a Zaggi in a race...), for new projects, after which they will both be looking for good homes...

If you are ever in the area pm me and we will see if we can set up a session. I fly mode 2, single stick, but there are others in the club who fly the Girlies split stick mode as well..

Been wanting to get back into some slope soring for some time, still have a couple of the old plus a couple of new and shiney ones. off up to Hull at the weekend and as i live in the flatlands (Cambridgeshire) it may be an opportunity to do some slope soaring where they have slopes 

Sooo, any local knowledge of where will be good, winds look to be easterlies, 8-10mph prob a bit more at the top.

Easy access would be great too - not used to climbing hills these days.

PS, tried south east cos i subscribe to there, told to go to the northeast, tried them told to come here

yeah, well, soft suvverner here but you guys have some great slopes up there and not much diff to running down to sussex or somewhere where they are realy soft.

Dad was a Geordie, can i come and play on the basis of heritage :-)

Got a new toy to play with too

My lad (27) fancies swapping his car for a Mini (BMW) - there ensued the usual 'its not a real mini' argument, followed by disagreement between me & swmbo as to whether our old white 1275GT was a clubman style or the conventional mini style. I was absolutely sure it was a clubman front, so set about digging out some very old B/W photos.
Anywho, found an old pic from Jordanthorpe (I think) with Ken Emmet to the right.

I also found a pic of my first electric model, charging in the boot of said mini - this was in the era of 540 can motors and 8x 1200mah sub-C nicads. The mini was a clubman (Wahoo I win!) and dates both pics at about 1976 ish.
The model is a V-tailed bitsa using my faithful Impala wings & a homebrew mechanical mixer. Its also the second from the front in the Jordanthorpe photo.

I've only just seen this thread. And can confirm that Terry Gregory is alive and well (although has a penchant for e mailing prolific spam!) and is the SSA's electric secretary. We fly electric at Lodge Moor sports field. Ken Emmett is still seen at both Lodge Moor and Callow bank on occasion.

 Graham Freeston was mentioned; sadly Graham passed away in April 2007, and we had a few tributes to his legacy in the SSA in 'Glady's' our newsletter. Unfortunately I never had the pleasure of meeting him, as I got into flying and joined the SSA shortly afterwards. The SSA is pretty strong in members, and hopefully we can extend it by generating some interest from younger people to keep the pastime alive.
