Hi,

We are a school based youth group slope soaring club based on the Great Orme in Llandudno. As far as I am aware we are the only official club in the area as the Great Orme Soaring Association seems to have fizzled out. As well as us there are a few regulars both in terms of locals and people who travel from further afield to enjoy the views and spectacular cliff top soaring. Be good to hear from others in the area. We are thinking about changing our status to a full BMFA club which people can join from outside of our school.

PSSA event today and tomorrow on the Orme - hopefully will get a chance to pop up. Wind looks a little light at the moment though!

Hope the wind picks up for the event JJ. Not much here in South Wales either :(

wind is a bit better today but cant make it up today. There is also suppose to be a flyby of the red arrows on the prom today. It would be cool to get everyone haws in the air as they fly past what a pic that would be!!

I may be up your way for a couple of days at the end of this month. Is north Wales a one slope district or do you fly in a variety of winds? I don't mind rocky LZs my foamies bounce of anything.

The great orme is really good as it is a headland that sticks out into the sea and works for a variety of wind directions best are S SW W NW NE E, SE is the only one that is a bit tricky. PM me if you want details of locations.

The Little Orme is quite good in a light easterly /  south easterly, especially with a DLG

Thanks, looks like a visit to north Wales is on for the end of October. 

Well, Great Orme, great expectations, great disappointment.
Only a very gentle SE wind on Thursday.
Friday am even less.
Went home via the scenic route, might as well enjoy something from Wales.

Thought I would post some vids taken around the Orme.
First one is taken on the most used SW/W facing site. Good lift here most days in the prevailing wind. To get there follow Marine Drive (toll) almost to the westerly tip, you need to turn left just after passing the Rest and be Thankful cafe (great Lemon Meringue Pie!!) drive up the bumpy concrete track until you get to a parking area at the top. From this spot you can access the main slope overlooking the gunsites and the other slopes that work when the wind is WNW and NW. LZ is good in most cases just watch out for walkers and the odd limestone outcrop.

Second one is taken from what we call the Ski Slope Site. Park at the Ski Slope and folllow the footpath that skirts round the edge of the bobsleigh run. You come out on top overlooking the pier this site generates incredible lift - one of my favourites! We have quite a good relationship with the ski slope and they dont mind us parking, I am sure you will be OK if you buy a coffee or snack form the ski lodge.

Google Maps details of sites in the Conwy Coastal area

Started getting together details of sites in the Conwy area - Little Orme and Conwy Mountain to come.

Flew for a bot yesterday on the SW facing site, excellent conditons only us up there, had a play with the gumcam again - this is the result, hope you like.

I am in Llandudno from the 24th to the 27th next week and I am looking forward to getting to fly the Orme for the first time. Just hope the wind plays ball now. 

whats the landing area like suitable for big scale stuff??

I'm heading up to Bangor tomorrow (tues 18th) and will be around until the 24th. I thought I'd head over to the Orme. As a virgin, is there a place I should head for or is there someone who fancies an evening on the slopes?

Been here 2 days wind hasn't played ball a lot got a quick flight yesterday from above the ski slope bit if a gulp job chucking it over cliff in light winds today the wind has swung north not sure which slope to try this afternoon any suggestions?

If you followed the path to the left of where you were flying you would reach a small ridge facing North, it generates good close in lift and you can also 'push out to fly the lift of the main slope just in front.

No problem on most of the sites - certainly upto 1/4 scale anyway - I know cos I dun it

I am wondering if that was you driving up to fly just as I was leaving on the thursday morning?

Today (bank holiday Monday), looks perfect for Conwy Mountain.  So if anyone fancies it, see you up there.

AS A PAST PRESIDENT OF THE GREAT ORME SOARING ASSOCIATION [ MOTTO :-  DOWN HILL ALL THE WAY  ] AND I GUESS A FOUNDER MEMBER ETC IT IS SAD TO SEE /HEAR THAT THE CLUD IS NO LONGER ALIVE ? , IT WAS ORIGONALY THE CRESO HILL CLUB AND CHANGED TO THE GREAT ORME ETC BACK IN THE LATE 80'S - 90'S.,  HELD ONE OF THE FIRST P.S.S. MEETINGS WITH RAY JONES ETC FROM CLWYD CLUB ETC.

MIKE SARGENT A LOCAL BUILDER ,LESTER WATKINS AND OTHERS WERE PART OF THE BACK BONE , THE ARCH WING COMMANDER AND REAL FOUNDER WAS DAVE WILLIAMS WHO IS ALAS NO LONGER WITH US AND I GUESS THATS TAKEN THE HEART OUT OF IT.
HAVING ALAS LEFT  RHOS IN 93 FOR SUTTON COLDFIELD I KNOW IT WAS STILL ACTIVE FOR SOME YEARS AFTER AS I REGULARLY VISITED ETC FOR SOME YEARS UNTILL BUSSINESS PREVENTED , ALTHOUGH NOW SEMI RETIRED I HAVE BEGUN TO FREQUENT NORTH WALES MORE OFTEN-USUASLY WITH THE CLWYD LADS I MUST ADMIT.

I MUST FIND OUT WHATS HAPPENED TO THE OLD CREW, IT WOULD BR GOOD TO HAVE A CLUB ON THE ORME TO REGLATE MATTERS ETC  AS WE DID FOR THE BENIFIT OF ALL.

I have been flying the Orme since moving north in the early 90's, so I have great memories of flying with Dave, Lester etc. Some of the original crowd still fly on the Orme and thankfully there are also many new people flying locally. The Orme is also becoming very popular with people from further afield and its not unusual to have 20 or so flying on a SUnday. The PSSA still hold regular fly ins at the Orme also.

I run a BMFA affiliated youth group 'ST Davids College SIlent Flight' but this is only open to members of the school, we have a healthy membership with about 10 really keen youngsters between the ages of 10 - 18. There has been mention of us changing our affiliation to a full club open to outside members as there is no local club as such. I have mentioned it to a few local flyers and it is something that I would be keen on setting up - mainly to foster a positive link between us flyers and the Great Orme Country Park (before someone tries to ban flying!!) any advice would be much appreciated.

I'll keep an eye on this forum during the week if you woukd let me know when and where you plan to fly - or PM me.

Site overlooking the ski slope should be OK in the morning, was up ther this evening with the Alula. Park at the ski slope and follow the footpath behind the alpine lodge through a kissing gate and up on to the top, might see you in the morning after 10 possibly.

Doe's anybody know people who run the field at  Tywyn (Aberdovey) as would like to use a fomie FMS Fox up there over whitsun  .Fancy on the beach when tide is out may get some lift off the sea defence .
Would be using 2.4 gear .Normally I fish that end of the beach

I'm heading up to the Great Or me today, got a glider in the car and was hoping to fly there. Is there likely to be anyone flying there today? I'm on 2.4, BMFA insured are there any local rules/courtesy's for me to follow?

You will be fine on 2.4, was up there last night with the kids from school had a great session flying with the school group. Not sure if the winds are going to play ball earlier on today though it looks better later this evening. When the wind is questionable we usually go to the summit first to check wind direction and speed, we do not always rely on the forecast as local conditions/sea breezes etc can effect both speed and direction.

Made it up to the Orme yesterday and had a great time, met a very friendly chap called Richard who was flying his Zaggi. Look forward to returning for the PSS flyin later in the year.

Missed the session yesterday as I had to fly south due to family illness, some of the lads flew the sand dunes on west shore yesterday afternoon and had a great time.
