it's not a Sir Red build  $%&

That's as maybe Shaun, it looks pretty damn good from where I'm sitting and it's coming on really quickly  :embarassed:

Keep up the good work. I am going to get the new revamped kit in the new year.

I have more time than most, I have been out of work for the past 7 years due to mental issues but have recently started work 16 hours a week working from home.  Whilst I actually get less money by working at least I am not, as I felt, scrounging off the state and am being useful again.  So once I done my 16 hours which can normally be done any time I like in the day my time is mine............... after doing the washing, vacuuming, shopping, cutting the lawn and making sure SWMBO has a good proper plate of food when she gets home from work.

Alan, I have just finished the gun bump you were asking about a few days ago.

It's not 100% scale and will only have a 1/2 gun i.e. a barrel sticking out but I think it's all that's needed on a sport model.

Looks great Shaun :af  Trouble is you won't know what to fly in the DP slots ......... Betty or the SE $%&

I've always loved the SE5A ever since I built the Revell 1/72 kit after one of my first visits to OW in the early '70s.

Dear Shaun
I have to agree with Alan once again, the SE5a is one of my favourite WW1 aircraft.
looks to me like, you are doing a first class job mate.

I look forward to seeing it fly.

The plan is not a plan as such, no material dims and is very confusing in that details are limited.  Rib shape and sizes shown in one part do not correspond with ribs on another part of the plan.  Whilst this is based on the DB "Kit" this is not a DB SE5a, many parts are different and materials have been substituted for cheaper or what I believe to be more suitable (or what I got and can afford  ;D).

Every single piece of wood I have cut, some twice  :''

Work is going to stop here for a few days as my girls are coming for a visit  :co

I still have to make up the elevators and ailerons but the airframe so far weighs 7.41Lb that's inc the undercarriage, cabanes and centre/outer wing panels which seems reasonable.

I spent 10 minutes with a bit of litho and think if I get time I will do a proper job to simulate the fuel tank.

Diatex 1000 and dope then WBC paint  ;) but initially I will fly it in the raw doped Diatex just to prove it flies as I may have to swap out the Honda for a G38 which at the moment has a bent crank, Alan C is straighting it hopefully  :xx

Kids have gone back  :'( I feel sick to the stomach, eldest left in tears again not really wanting to go.

I went out to the garage to "do a bit", no real interest, no sense of direction and lots of doubt creeping in.  Weather is very windy and wet, even the plan feels all damp and limp a bit like I feel.

yup I done a bit :)  Woodwork is glued on and sanded on the undercarriage and Bottom 1/32" ply is on and cooling outlets behind the firewall cut.

Cowl is made, it's slightly agricultural but what the heck  $%&

Plenty of room for the Honda

I have not figured out what to do about making up the 2 louvered grills over the unmade radiator yet, I think they will just be a basic 1/32" ply thingie.

;D you not seen it in the flesh yet  ;D

2 questions

1) steerable tails skid yes or no?  I'm thinking no as I have found it best to retrieve by hand especially at fly ins for safety + saving nose overs or ground loops.

2) Elevators either:
a.  as per plan with a piano wire joiner with horn silver soldered (will have to be mig welded as I have no ss facility) with a carbon push rod to a single servo.
b.  horns on each elevator hooking up closed loop.  Full size to those that don't know had closed loop but run inside the tail plane. I' not faffing about like that on a sport model.

I have given the fuselage 3 coats of dope (clear cellulose lacquer primer) sanding between coats today and it's taken ages!  After using Koverall on my Pup I found the wood needed thoroughly sealing before koverall adding or the wood soaked up the dope and gave pin pricks in the final paint.  I would like to do the tail skid next as it's already getting a bit of hanger rash which is not surprising considering the state of the hanger!  Once the skid is done I can get the elevators and rudder sorted and I can start covering the fuselage rear I will feel like I'm getting somewhere then.

I'd go with a central horn and pushrod for the elevator. Neat and simple, then you can dummy the scale closed loop jobbie.

I'd go for a steery skid, controlled as per full size with another run of cables, though you could simply run a piano wire link from rudder to skid (a la elevator joiner type thingy) but there'd be no shock absorbtion for the servo going this route, wheras you could fit in line springs if you ran more cables.

Cant do much with other things as I'm waiting for call backs and letters to arrive so made th hinge up for the steerable tails skid from piano wire, 0.8mm galvanized steel and 3/16" brass tube.

I thought I may as well incorporate the closed loop horn in the hinge

Folded it then bent it round a 3/16" drill bit.

Soldered on the short lengths of brass tube and the piano wire is also soldered to the top hinge so it cant fall out  :''

Total weight is 1/2oz, if it's 8X the distance behind the c of g than the nose length that equates to 1/4Lb at the front!

I could not help myself, I have been looking at a 10 yard roll of Diatex for a few weeks now and just had to try a bit so have covered the underside of the fuselage, stuck it with cellulose lacquer stuff but being so cold it takes a long time to cure and the rest of the covering may have to wait till warmer weather.  As far as I can tell Diatex 1000 is Koverall.

This is without shrinking it yet which I will do once the dope stuff has hardened then will give all another coat or 4.

I also made up the steerable skid, still have to add the metal wear plate.  It's not scale but still looks ok.  I wish I had lighter materials to hand but made it from what I had, 16swg wire would be quite enough really.

Been silently following for a while - must say I am impressed.  Presuambly most of the weight is in the piano wire ?  Could you use 5mm carbon rod and hysol rather than silver solder ?  I have no knowledge if it would be up to the job at that scale and with the intended loads - but it would be lighter.

Hi Simon

I have not done the elevator joiner inc horn yet but carbon may be an option.  Thing is that's what proper builders use isn't it  ???  I'm reluctant to use Hysol as I may get to like it and it's expensive, so far this has been a (as all my builds are) a budget build for the average modeler.

Tail skid in position.

Nothing doing here I'm afraid, been away for a few days and when returned found the cat missing so I'm canvasing the area with leaflets etc trying to find her.

Things still to do:

Wing tips
Make/fit Ailerons
Elevator and rudder horns
Fit closed loop
Throttle push rod
Buy/fit fuel tank
Interplane struts
All rigging
Radiator louvers
etc etc etc

Still nothing doing here but I will get back on it after Christmas, well that's my intention.  I have a mental block with a few bits, nothing I cant handle when I'm firing on all cylinders but the mind is not what it should be right now.  I think the 1st operation should be to get all the keyhole plates made for the cabanes then get the wing tips made up + ailerons, that may spur me on a bit.
Right now the SE5q is hanging from the ceiling of the hanger as I just have no space to work, to much stuff in to small a place.  something like 12 airframes 5 of which are 1/4 scale (nothing good, jus ole tat) + Galaxy Mystic, Galaxy P51, whirlgig, Jamara P51, home design bipe, DB small SE5a, 6 bicycles, 2 tables, 2 benches etc etc etc.

Shaun, fine build. Just found it and read to catch up this AM. I have a BUSA SE 5a thats a great flyer. Goes 23 Lbs or a bit more. I used a seperate servo on my steering skid in case it got beat up so my rudder wouldn't be affected. I originally flew it with a G38 but I couldnt get it to run properly, it's electric now. Hope you are able to return to the build post the hollidays. I'm subscribed.

Hi doc
You went electric  :o

Just been out to the hanger again to look at all that needs doing, don't know if it's due to the kids gone back to their mothers after the Christmas visit or what but I can't find any interest whatsoever to do anything out there at all.  Had so much grief with both new and 2nd hand stuff that I just don't have it in me to do anything.  Any modelling mates are several miles away so basically I feel I'm here alone messing about with things unsure if anything I'm doing is right.  I'm questioning the Honda now thinking it will be scale flying at best, I like plenty in reserve for just in case type things + playing.

Hanger door is closed and locked again.  Anyone wanna part built SE5a, ready to fly 1/4 scale DR1, VP1 Volksplane, ZG62 I'm not fit enough to start, possibly shagged Zenoah Easy start, Zenoah 22, DB Scout (se5a) and anything else in my hanger

Absolutely not, none of it's up for grabs - you'll get stuck in to the SE soon enough and get it finished ready for a Dwarf Patrol slot in the New Year.  You know how brilliant they are!    First flying for me yesterday since Osbournby - well worth the wait.  Shame you couldn't make it but the next Fly-In  will be round in no time even (as will the next kids visit) if "local flying" isn't too appealing just at the minute >:(
