Where did you get the pilot?  I've searched everywhere for that one for my H9 P51.  I settled for the BBI "Donald Moore" cos he was all I could find on a certain auction site!

Have you decided on a cockpit yet?  I went with the dBalsa one for mine but I really wish I hadn't, there's more bits in it than the plane itself!

Congratulations on a cracking build!

Hello Q,

Nice cockpit, I hope I can do something nearly as good as that, I've not done one before, and I think it's 'not my thing' but I'll give it a go. I already got a top flite moulded effort, it seems to fit the opening quite well, but the seat is to small for the pilots bum  ;D

I got my pilot from a certain auction site as well, search for 'William Bowman' he crops up from time to time.

Here he is now, same guy I bought mine from...

DID WW11 US Air Force William Bowman Box set Dragon bbi on eBay (end time  30-Nov-09 16:12:52 GMT)

He is B17 crew really, but with his parachute on you can't see the nose art painted on the back of his jacket. He also comes with a rather nice 50cal. I thought about buying 6 of them just to put in a 1/6th B17  :ev :ev

No willy Bowman though  :-\ He has not been in production for a year or two, and BBI are going all civil war. I rang Modellers loft and asked for Willy Bowman, the response was 'computer says no' 'COUGH'.

I did my research on the web, and then searched ebay. You need to be quite specific with search words though.

I have had my mouse over the buy button for the very same auction for my YT Mustang.  I loose all feeling in my finger every time I try and press the button for some reaason :co

I have been hunting for one ever since the Nats and these are the first to come available in that time.  I might manage it soon I suppose.   Cough!

Well the wings are now riveted and the raised panels stuck on, I think I'm gonna be seeing rivets in my sleep  :D

Next up, finish glassing the ailerons and flaps (I can't put it off any longer  >:( ) prime and rivet and fit them.
Then start work on the cockpit and cowl.

I;m happy to not do any more riviting for a while now. How Phil stuck that 1/4 scale seafury is beyond me  :uk:  ;D

Did these pilots sit on their parachute? Cos if they did my pilot is gonna need a hole cut in the top of the canopy  :ev

Ta mate,

As I feared, looks like I better lower his seat, or smoke and mirrors it.

I've just taken all the pilots clothes off, it feels a little wrong but, he needs an operation, hardcore liposuction, dremel style. He currently weight 7 1/2 Ozs, we'll see what I can get him down to  :ev :ev

Anyway, I have knocked up a cockpit tub, it's maximum depth the fus structure will allow, now I have to paint and assemble it.

I have a mixture of humbrol enamels, Acryilic rattle cans and a drop of WBC. Should be fun  :study:

Well, irt looks like he's gonna lose his parachute, I could hang it over the back of the seat  $%& .

The cockpit has had a coat of sanding sealer and a rub down, the instrument panel is painted flat black and all other parts (including the tub) have had a coat of primer and a coat of olive drab.

Quite a productive weekend really  :)

Onwards tomorrow  :uk:

Just had to drill the one hole in my Pilot, but it was a good'n. It went through the seat and into the crack of eez 4r$£ so I could fix him in with a 3/4" cheese-head, funnily enough, he's never looked quite comfortable flying my YT Thunderbolt. $%&

Matt....Re the pilot

Wouldn't it have been better to remove the body, and keep the head/hands and boots. Then stuff the clothing with cotton to a body shape and re- attach the "bits" ? Its got to save a ton of weight surely?

I haven't tried it myself, (yet) but I do have a pilot awaiting such treatment when I get his spitfire done.

Real aeroplanes have propellers...anything else is nothing but a paraffin burner...........besides,

Mat, i agree on the body, you could use foam with a bit of soft wire through the middle so you can still pose him.

And are you going to do a bit of 'dry brushing' on the cockpit to bring out the detail?

Was it really worth the effort lightening the pilot? My first scratch build 81 in P-47 was 18 pounds, a friend had a Yellow Aircraft one at 27 pounds, and a guy in the US had one at 36 pounds!! All flew well, although the heavier one landed a bit faster. Will saving 1 1/12 oz really make a difference to the flying?

On models this size, you don't need to be paranoid about weight like a small model, and warbirds often fly better with more weight, otherwise they get blown about in the slightest breeze rather than being stable and flying through gusts.

Hmm, 'All that effort' = 15 minutes with a dremel. I had no idea how much weight I would save as I've never done it before. I know now, and so do others.
I agree with what you say about the weight of a warbird but I've already added nearly 1lb with just the exhaust, even more with cockpit, tail wheel and servo, the paint and glass etc. I think it weighed about 18lbs before I started, I would like to keep it below 23Lbs AUW by the time I've finished, otherwise I'll never be able to get it in at my local patch. And yes Steve, I still have a bit of work to do on the cockpit, I need to get to the Humbrol shop.

Mat.

The cockpit nits a weathered, and this afternoon (with a nasty headache from last nights works meal  :-X ) I decided to crack on with applying WBC US grey to the underside on the wings. I'm really struggling with with spraying it. I'm not sure if it's the paing consistency or my Badger 200. Bloomin thing will be fine to start with then stop spraying, then after about a minute seem to get clogged, then splatter, then clog  :banghead: :banghead:

I've thinned it by adding about 6ml water to 1oz of paint. It started to look a bit thin on the surface so I am reluctant to add more water, or I'll be fish eyeing it. It it taking ages to do and I'm tempted to go get a rattle can.

I'll take some piccys in a bit...

I had the same problem using my airbrush so used a gravity feed detail gun instead, problems solved but I can only go down to about a 3/4" fan with that.
