Yes I would  be very interested in a fuz. I'll send you a PM.  I'll post some pics when the GC  is back back together. Its very rough and ready more of a proof of concept. Doing some measurements with jpg's from the video suggest that the max speed was about 100mph and I feel there is  more to come in  better conditions.

Chris - it's "glass-fibre Daisy Cutter".

Carbon isn't much stronger than glass. It's just stiffer. Kevlar is stronger than either, but more difficult to laminate.

I had considered coming over G but forcast showed wind direction could be S/w.

Quick question, when the wind is a s/westerly has anyone tried launching from the usual spot to gain height then walked higher up to Lords seat???  On google earth the very steep backside appears to be at right angles to a oncoming s/w ? I know its quite flat on the top up there but it might work and that severely steep backside could produce good results with more ground clearance in a circuit.

Think i should have tried RE today, still showing 30mph peak at the mo, and bang on southerlies.
Never mind got a bit of good frontside action with the Dynamics on our local slope.

Did anyone venture up to RE today?

Shame you didn't come up to RE as it was a very pleasant day & you would have enjoyed it, although almost predictably (reflecting the MO's caution after the Oct 1987 storm debacle....) the wind was weaker than forecast.
Sufficient for cruising rather than fast cruising.

FTD was KS' D40 with 149 mph.
Failing to make 150 cost him a round of drinks at the usual old hostelry on the way home.....

His D60 would have gone rather faster, of course, but on its release from the bag it was evident that some of the span-loading lead in the wing was slopping about, so strictly no-go.

Ironically, while KS was buying a round in the pub, it was evident from the clouds overhead that the wind had picked up considerably. Typical!

Ron (Broughton) was the only other flyer. His Zipper went round v.nicely.

Barely any walkers, so almost no DSing disturbance.


Regarding SW'lies; in a true SW'ly there's barely any lift on the front at RE (even over the frontside "bowl" near the trees), so you'd be lucky to nurse your plane up to Lord's Seat.
It might be possible to launch frontside beyond LS & then drop-in back at LS but, so far as I'm aware, no-one has tried it.

Needs someone to have the energy to try it.

I would be willing to have a walk up to LS next time im in the area if the wind does swing around to more s/w. Would be very interested to see if it would work, the backside appears to be as steep as PYF but i have only seen pics........but would love to actually get up there and check it out for real

On another note there seems to be little interest on the ds forum lately, appears to be the same 3-4 people posting which i find strange as the forum  gets lots of hits every day, and we have had lots of wind over the last month

Obviously getting time of work could be a big issue for many,......oh, and timing the holiday to coincide with ideal ds conditions

Would  be nice if some of you lurkers could post  occasionally and keep the threads going?
Anyone keen to try ds for the first time? Get in touch, maybe arrange to meet up on a slope for a bit of guidance

A few years ago, when my life was dull and boring  (before my exciting DS adventures began) I took a light foamie to the slope in front of Lord's Seat. It is quite a long way from front to back on that part of the hill but decent mouldies like your D60 would cover the ground with little fuss and if for any reason you had a hickup down the back and didn't have enough speed left to punch out to the front again, the top is laminar flow with a huge area of nice soft grass to land in.

Having said that I just looked at Google Maps terrain view (showing the contours) and the front of the hill in the area you're considering faces SSE so it wouldn't give any useful lift in a SW. As Graham pointed out, lift on the front at RE gets terrible once the wind veers beyond SSW. Somewhere beyond about 200 degrees the lift just switches off. Further along the hill towards Lord's Seat the slope faces more E so would surely be even worse. It's such a shame because we are in real need of a decent SW site in this area.

Don't let me put you off trying because if it did work we'd all be stoked and forever grateful but I would suggest going with the attitude, prepare for the worst and hope for the best!

There isn't as much DS activity as in recent years, for a number of reasons.

For one, those intent only on pursuing speed find it gets expensive, too expensive for some.

The survivors tend to be those who are also keen on DS cruising.

Though the latter doesn't produce much of interest to anyone else, so postings are infrequent.

And of course there are two forums taking almost all DS traffic, where once there was one.

With Jools, heading for RE tomorrow morning.
Hope some more venture out.
Bring a sledge, just in case.
