Cheers guy's,
Winchweight, the oleo's have a hole in the top with two grub screws in the side at the top of each leg. So it's just a matter of using a short piano wire pin of appropriate gauge. But you must file flats in the wire at the points each grub screw tightenson to it (both the two in the leg and the two in the retract unit each side) to stop the legs twisting out of true in use.

Walts

p.s. Yes Ian you really do need to get a move on with your (some what more complicated) Hurricane, I'm running out of places to nick ideas from ;D ;D

Certainly, once I've worked out how to do it :ev ;D ;D The doors are only laid on in the pic for aesthetics. I did make these brackets from the one on the left, then tapped a screw in to the side of each one to clamp them to the legs. The idea was to then use very small screws to screw the doors to the flats on them once they had been adjusted to the right depth. They worked quite well but were just to chunky around the oleo to look scale ::)

I cut one off of each end of the original clips through the scroll saw, and at around £1.70 for a bag of 25 SWA cable cleats from B & Q that adds up to a lot of door cover clamps ^-^

It's taken awhile to make a small amount of progress lately due to the wife deciding we, (meaning me) need to decorate the hall & landing, like now! and she's got the conservatory lined up for me next week :o
But i have managed a bit.............I noticed that the curve of the canopy is much rounder than the curve of the rear cockpit decking. So i used this to my advantage to create the recessed part of the fus inside the rear canopy. I glued on two layers of 1/6th balsa as far forward as the canopy frame. Then planed the top back to the original veneer and sanded a rounder curve to the decking to match the canopy. The front part was then filled with light weight filler and sanded to meet the original veneer with the characteristic angled slant at the bottom. (see pic's sequence)

I've also added the stringers, changing the front panelling slightly to look more scale. The stringers supplied are all 3/32"sq but the plan shows varying thicknesses to give a curve to the fus side, so i went with this option, only using the 3/32"sq for the top stringers.

I know the wing fairings are not the right shape, if i had noticed this at the beginning i could have put it right by changing a few key components, but i didn't so I'll just have to live with it :D I also inset a 1/32" ply strip for the top light and aerial mast..........

And managed to get the tail wheel and strake sorted................'Jack' doesn't miss a photo opportunity ::)

Decided to mount the engine today so i could do a propper fit of the cowl and spinner. But discovered I'd made a huge boo boo!! The prop driver is standing out a good 6mm :o I obviously made a right hash of my fire wall measurements. But it did answer a question...............I was a bit worried that the fixing area for the fire wall was a bit weak but man it took some removing. It took about an hour to carefully cut and chisel it out, going to re-epoxy it back in tonight 5mm further back ::)

Walts,

if you look carefully at mine, I put some rings on the front of the cowling, this also gave a more accurate profile.

Hi guy's,
Thanks for the ideas, but as Ian said, I had already removed the fire wall.
Anyway, It's all back together now and looking a lot better :) The RCV90sp is a hefty lump and should help a bit with the nose weight.

Done a bit more,
I too discarded the plastic exhausts and made some from balsa like Slipstream. I'd read of pepole sprinkling salt on the wet paint to give a rough cast look, but thought it might be too rough at this scale so used the same idea but with dust i scrapped off my graphite pencil. I haven't got a decent airbrush yet so they were hand painted with gun metal first then copper and a black wash scrubbed in.
I,ve masked off the front end and primed it with inset panel lines (again My camera doesn't quite show them up) and used Phil's Dads idea of small washers to represent fasteners.
I used B Taylor's idea of two removable hatches in the bottom of the cowl to get air in and out, with a baffle inside to try and direct the air through the fins of the SP engine. The exhausts are just popped in at the mo' until final painting but the cut out on the port side at the front of the stack is to give clearance for the bottom of the carb body, with the top part of the carb body actually protruding into the blister on top of the cowl...........it was a tight fit :o
The tail surfaces are just rested on at the mo' thats the next job..............Dreading the fairings from what others have said. Oh and i carved the small intake from a block of balsa, fiddly little job :)

Spot the switch in these last two pic's :D

Thanks for the kind comments.  Yep the retractable step is the switch :D it took a bit of jiggery to transform the 4mm of switch movement into the 20+mm i wanted on the stirrup to get a scale deployment, but i think it was worth it.
Guy,
The prop is an APC 15.75 x 14. I got it from RCV as they recommend it for the 90sp apparently it suits the 2:1 gearing of the engine, I just gave it a light spray with spectrum Matt black.

My warbirds Hurri is hanging in the garage, the gear is currently in a Harvard.  But you're doing such a great job I'm tempted to buy another and incorporate all the mods you've made.  Gear doors, panel lines, etc etc..

It's a great flier, cant wait to see yours fly, you're certainly making it a thing of beauty  :af

Unfortunately ....he's not really. He's moving house in mid May, so Mum's got him 'sorting' stuff already....... :-X

He's done bits here and there and the main paintwork & markings are all finished.....he's currently waiting for a set of 'rub on' decals (stenciling mainly) from 'Thescaleman' before he can finish any 'dirty' weathering and add the final clear coat to seal it all down..................to be honest, it might just get finished before they move, but I doubt it'll get flown until he's joined up at his new local club.

His Hurricane is looking really good :af  I know exactly where his at, my Dad moved nearly a year ago and hasn't managed to touch a model since. Mind you he did put building a new work shop at the top of his priorities, the rest of us would simply call it a new bungalow, you want to see this thing :o fantastic builder!

Hi everyone, just found this site and registered. I bought my hurricane just after it first entered the market and had never attempted a build before. I had great help from a friend and eventually after an enjoyable winter managed to persuade my other mate Sean to fly it with an Irvine 53. I definately needed a bit more poke and when I had to pack flying in for about four years I did'nt manage to fly it but boy does it look good in the air. I covered it in brown paper and painted it with humbrol. I am now starting again and although I sold a great deal of my kit I am now ordering as we speak. My Hurricane sits in the garage gathering dust but after seeing these brilliant pictures with loads of advice thrown in its coming in the house tonight where I am going to strip off everything and recover it. You lads have done a fantastic job and it makes the mouth water. I can only say what brilliant service Richard gives when you buy from him.
Cant wait to get started.
What a site.
Rob.

Hi all,
Had a push last week to get the last few jobs done ready for painting. I fitted the tail surfaces, made my own representation of the tail fairrings ::) and fitted the rest of the radio gear and fuel tank.

One of the things i wasn't really happy with was the bodge I'd made of the wing fairrings. If you look at the next pic you can see quite clearly the nasty blunt rough edge to them and the big gaps all around. So i built them up and re finished them, the silver is where I've sprayed along the panel lines to give me something to weather back to, I'll have to re add it to the fairrings.

And the little fella that's going to pilot it for me :D Nothing special just a jp latex bust.

I really am just waiting on the paints from Phil now and then I'm on the last leg :)

Hi Dennis, Cliff, Thanks guy's, My camera finally packed up for good, so we are getting a new one, should be here by the end of the week :) I've been doing a little bit in the cockpit, nothing too special but hopefully will be able to post some sharper close ups soon. DIY is still interfeering with any decent stint of modelling ::) But the plan was to bash out as much as i possibly could during the winter months and hopefully be left alone during the flying season ^-^

Walts, that is the most incredible rendition i have seen of my Humble kit. When you consider how dull the magazines have become with endless reviews of Artfs where the most anyone can say is "the spinner could be of better quality"etc, here is a real build that is enthusing so many people.
Its like a great novel , that none of us can put down.
There are some exceptional modellers on this forum , but this is especially exciting for me .
Two quick questions though.
Your labrador Jack , seems to have lost interest. Is this general to the breed?
About two pages back , I noticed you had a small salt and pepper pot to hand .
Are they an ancient building aid? Or do you manage to get so much done by dining and building on the same table.
Or ........., and be honest with us all here,
Have you eaten Jack?
