Hey Joe

Well we got it done dude.

Second flight for Adam - 211mph.
My maiden flight - 204mph.

Will and George flew theirs too, but took it a little easier just to get a feel for things.

They were quiet today once they got shifting mate!

Could have gone faster, but holy craparoonies - I judged those rates all wrong! Was sure that I had a 200+mph rate, but once I got her up there - I swear I must have only been moving the stick a hair's breadth at any one time. Needed it tamed down a lot more!

Hey Clayt
well I decked the D40 in th early arvo having uped my pb from 120 to 130 then to 137 mph.
Then I was flying it and she got hit by some poo and in she went.  :o
I flew just the same on the lap before but there you go.  :'(
Had 8 hours on the transmitter clock for the D40 so I suppose thats not too bad... She was flying nice too. B u m m e r!
The good news is the wing is ok, the fuz is in 3 or 4 bits... probably fix able... or get a new fuz.

So that sort of killed my energy for the D80, if you know what I mean.

I got myself ready to go and Zim was off looking for his plane and was on my channel. So we had to take the radio plate out of the D80 to change the channel. (Very easy as it turned out, nice one Joe!) NOw I was on 73 and ready to go.
The 'Nasa' quality turnigy wind meter said 34mph and Adam launched the D80 for me. I put in a few clicks of down and very little else and she cruised around like the thorough bred she is. Very nice, but to be truethful with you , I was not having a good time... too much wind around the sunnies and the thought of having to land on the front in this howling wind... I had all ready decided she was not going in the back today. (Three planes down and I was not going to risk another...! )
Got the D80 down, with a little cartwheel at the end, but on the soft heather so no bother.
Will chucked his D80 in the backside at the end of the day and it was horrible. I wondered if he was going to get i t back at one point, but he did... So I was happy to put her in the bags and save the ds for another day.
Alll in all a good day, shame about the binnage.
Thanks guys
George  :uk:

ok, so enough of my wow's, but the day itself was awesome for a few reasons.
I was gunning for Adam when he took his first D80 flight of the day. (2nd on the model)
I launched it badly twice then got it away.  :'' Adam soon chucked it in the back.
120 on the dive it 'Dont Count' says I
2nd lap 134
3rd lap 140 odd
4th - 190
5th - 200
a few over 200 then 211, then Adam banged out. 'You going in again Ads?'
"No mate, I need to land to think about that...!"

The D80 came up the hill on lap 5 about 20% faster than it had the time before and it rearly took us by suprise.  :o
on the 211 lap she came up the hill and seamed to 'suck up' some heather and stuff from the hill, round the top turn and back down again she went and then came up the hill through the stuff that flying from the lap before, like debris... very cool. An image that will stay with both of us for some time...

The D80 flights I gunned during the day were very cool indeed. The ship makes a great noise when it crosses the shear layer and was rock solid in appearence at all times.
Great plane. Cant wait to ds it.

Thought I'd make a post here... Got out with the D80 again today... Not a massive day but it was cool to get some laps in and get some more feel on the model. Tried a few things... I reckon one of the most important things with a DS model, whether you are Mode 1 or Mode 2 is to get the right relationship of rates on the elevator to the ailerons.

Seems that it works really well to have a fairly responsive elevator, but to leave the ailerons quite soft. Especially in Mode 2 this helps stop any coupling when you are pulling in the turns. Thanks for the tip, Joe!

So anyway, I got a good blend on that in the end, and then thought I would try some snap-flap. I just dialled a little bit in - maybe 3mm on the root of the flaps, worked out over the ailerons. Seems to work really nicely. Today wasn't a big day, so the speeds were over 150 if you got lucky. I felt that the model was speeding up best if you would do really tight laps that were fairly flat. Certainly with the snap-flap turned on the model just felt a little bit more secure in the tight laps than with it off. Just that slightly more grippy feel. Not sure if it would make any difference at big speeds, but certainly DSing at these lower speeds, I think the snap-flap felt pretty good on the D80!

What a model though... Great day with it - so much fun. Did some simple DS acro with it for the first time today too. I'm going to go watch Daemon's videos again for some inspiration...

Cheers!

Zim

Way too expensive and completely unnecessary mate!

I think that probably the 5645 wing servo is adequate for the D80 if you are looking to keep the costs down, with 12kg on 6v. I think that Joe's decision to go with the Titanium gear train servo on the 80 is also about ensuring that the servos survive strafing Mars Hill. Not sure, but hopefully Joe will comment.

HOWEVER, the 7990 with a 2s LiPo direct in is the servo of choice for the D130. It will have 5 of these - even on the elevator. 44kg of torque.

Incredible spec really...

Wow, nearly £600 for servos!   :o

This is the alternative if you want less toruwe but more speed. only 16Kg but SUPER FAST.

Not sure that speed is really necessary mate. I think that .18 on 6v is more than enough for a DS application tbh.

When considering speed bear in mind that there are LOTS or chaps using the good old 3150 on 4.8v in their Opus airframes. And they are 0.24sec on 4.8v and quite clearly adequate for the job.

I have built out a few models using the 7950's. Really is overkill. I cant see spending the extra money on them when the 7955's are already more than we need. The titanium geartrain from Hitec makes the best servos. They do not generate slop over time as they do not wear out easily. I agree, a lesser servo would do the trick but you might end up with flutter issues after a season or perhaps after a few flights. That is the last thing I want especially when that big day arrives that lets me find weakpoints in my setup. I try to build all of my models to withstand speeds greater than I have ever gone before. On a record day where I might be able to go 400+ with a D80, the few dollars I can save on servos means nothing to me. I need my models to perform at their best.

Good thinking to keep it warm, Adam, but why not just keep it in the house? :ev

Expecting some big figures from this cool number...... :af

This post should be framed and stuck for posterity onto the front page as a lasting reminder to all the tightwads who will do anything and everything they can to shave off a few pence when they really should be thinking long and hard about consequences of their actions. There is a time and place for ill considered thriftyness.
Thank you Joe.

Backside Betty No2 is ready, :af

Few differences this time round, 1 being a weight increase from 4.3 kilo to 6.2 kilo (220oz) fully loaded.

Just a shame I can't afford the petrol to drive to a slope anymore!! £1.31 a litre and climbing.  ???

Yeah - bit harsh that one - saw it on the news today as well and groaned.

So a heavier one - good one mate. What's the empty weight?

220 seems to be a good weight that a lot of the guys in the US are building to now as their fully loaded one. We'll have to see how Patrick Hausler's take on it turns out, with 24oz of weight in EACH tip. That's 3lbs between the two tips.
