ooo  eerr   missus   $%&  wot have i done

i am sitting here at my pc waiting the arival of the De Haviland stork (aka Dave Whiston "captain Beaky" in a white van) Delivering my new aquisistion THE DH2.. after a couple of years of doing more road miles than air miles, it is coming to the ceejay workshops for a full refurb, and new colour scheme, a little daunting given its past success in the hands of Ian, its all been done proper like, its allready registered in my name with the LMA over 20Kg scheme, and forms will be filled in asap for exemtions to test fly etc, hopeing to have it at wigan in some sort of assembleable condition, not painted !!......

Now Do i record and post the work on here runnig the risk of boring the pants off folks!!  $%& or sneak off quietly and come back when its done,    :''           will it be ok?  $%&             will it finish up looking like a bag of old clothes?...   ???ooooooooo  the stress :study: :study:

first two show a rear boom strut, all struts were in a similar condition, next two show rear booms the holes should be 4mm and the booms should be straight, there is some distortion from the close up but they are both bent.

no pics this time honest :af

so to the update report, pics next week, work so far, first was to address the issue of the broken tube connector, now it was allways my plan to alter this to make it more dismantleable, so it has been altered, it was first reunited into one assy, then cut down the middle to give two halves one tube each side, this is now mountable with bolts to upright tube, it will all become clear when i do the foto,s, next was to the booms, these are made from ally tube, all mounting points were reinforced with hard dowel inserts all oversize holes filled then redrilled all tubes straightend then rubbed down a coat of etch primer two coats of hi build primer another rub down then two coats of gloss grey, a new rear upright has been made to match the other side and all strut mounting threads are now straight, all the rear rigging has been binned and new 75lb weight wire purchased, booms will be re assembled and re rigged next week, then its onto the next bit, dunno wether to do fus or wings any suggestions folks

Hi Mark
yes it is a split at the end of the strut, and yes the srut burned well for 2 mins :af new strut is identical shape to original, awaiting varnish and logo, and most importantly... no cracks :af. as to a complete recover, will know more when i start to do the flying surfaces, i dont personaly mind patches and such in the fabric as long as the dont cover structural damage, after all its going to be finished in the colours of a frontline fighter, and will appear to be "well worn" and battle scarred when done but it will only be for apearances, it will be fully refurbed and inspected cos its over 20kgs, hence no more pics yet the mods are awaiting their inspection.

phew!! my typing finger hurts noww, all together  aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

For some bizarre reason I kept a diary for this model. Never done it before or since!! Last time I flew it was 3 goes up at Ashbourne in September 2007.  Last shows it attended were Hop Farm and I think Much Marcle.  $%& Said diary isn't near at the moment. I remember the diary lists every flight and every problem or incident. In all the years I flew it from memory there was only a handful of untoward happenings.
The scariest was a radio problem at Weston Park, where just after take off and climb out the model rolled onto is back and dived towards the hard stuff. I was holding in the controls to stop the diving roll and when control was regained it promptly (like it ever did owt promptly  ;D ;D) started to roll the other way. Needless to say the DH2 was landed on the downwind leg of the same first circuit. This was put down to an 'electrical storm' apparently a couple of others suffered similar.
Another memorable one was at Catton Hall, a flying wire bracket came undone, leaving a stainless bracket with two flying wires attached to it trailing free. Where did it get tangled, the darned prop!!! The prop blade went between the two wires and clouted the bracket off the end with the loudest noise I have ever heard from a toy aeroplane. The damage was minimal, a small chunk out of the prop and the obvious loss of same bracket!!

It has just over eighteen hours on the clock which amounts to a hearty 110 flights ( if my brain is working out 10 mins a flight ) in which time it was never dinged, apart from its very first flight attempt which broke a landing wire bracket after I throttled back below 100% - silly boy - I may as well have thrown it from an upstairs window.

It'll be nice to watch it fly in the near future :af

Must admit I have always liked this model and it was perhaps seeing it fly at Cosford that finally convince me that, I should stop playing with half aeroplane's and build a real one with two wings.
