Hi

Question aimed at Mac Man, but other views appreciated, particularly from DSX9 owners..

I bought a DSX9 last April but have only recently started to look at it. Whilst familiarizing myself with the System Menu I found the Stick Mode option was missing. There is just a gap on the screen where it should be.

A quick search of the web revealed that other versions of this radio, that have a non-digital throttle trim, do not have this item on the menu as stick mode change cannot be done by the user.  Versions such as the DSX9 with all digital trims should however have this option available, although there is an old thread by Mac Man on another forum which implies that some DSX9s may not have this option.

Whilst I do not want to change stick mode a present I am concerned over why my radio appears to have a different software load from other DSX9s and what the implications of this are, particularly as I bought this radio for use with large expensive models currently in the course of construction, albeit very slowly!

I have spoken to JR-MacGregor who said they had no knowledge of this issue and have asked me to return the radio for investigation.  However, at the moment I am not really in a position to send it back as I may have to rush off again at any moment to sort out family problems and would not want to be away from home when it is returned.  So I thought I would see if could get any further info before returning it when I am in a position to do so.

Many thanks
JWB

I have never heard of this happening on a JR/MacGregor system !

There is a remote possibility that somehow you have received a Far East version (typically sold in either Mode 1 or Mode 2)

It is labelled as JR/MacGregor ??

Mac Man

Thank you for your quick response.  Yes, this a JR-MacGregor set complete with all labels and stickers.  It was purchased from Inwoods who I believe are an offical JR-MacGregor dealer and included the MacGregor Industries Supplemental Instruction Manual.  I am pretty certain it is genuine as I contacted MacGregor when I first got it to check whether it had the wiring mod and they recognised the serial number.  Any further advice would be appreciated.

Also can any of you DSX9 owners out there confirm whether you have this option on your System Menu?  It is second from the bottom in the second column.

Many thanks
jwb

Just tested the 2 I have here and both are showing Stick Mode.

It will take me about 10 minutes to implement the necessary change to have it listed but it will require a complete reset with probable loss of model memories.

mac man

Thanks for the info on what needs to be done.  Losing the model memories is not a problem as I have only just started setting it up.

However, if you do a complete reset will it lose its calibration and hence need to be re-calibrated.  Also, is the software load common to all variants of this radio, with specific features just enabled or disabled, or are there a number of different software builds for specific applications.  I am sorry to appear a little pedantic, but having paid a lot of money for this radio (well at least it is for me) I am naturally concerned about what I have got.

Many thanks
jwb

Any system returned to macGregors will always be recalibrated prior to return.

Typically there are only 2 software loads, 1 for the US market and the other is everywhere else.  Various features are enabled or disabled by use of onboard jumpers.  Some of these can be software changed during recalibration as the jumper settings are only used during the reset/initialisation sequence.

If all else fails, then the main cpu board can be changed out should you have a US based firmware load.  But this can only be established during the recalibration process when I interrogate the hardware config.

If it was me I'd be in touch with Inwood asking for a new transmitter. A brand new product should be 'fit for purpose' (including selectable modes) and your transmitter would not seem to be that. You shouldn't have to be the one who organises a software reload.

For the record I also have a DSX9 and it is possible to change modes.

I would agree with that. Go back to the point of sale and get them to sort it for you. Its not your fault, also I have never seen a DS9X with manual trim on the throttle . I am not saying that they are not available but they must be fairly rare .

It's only the US version that has the manual throttle trim hence the different firmware.

Sorry, I should have said to get back in contact with Inwoods.  They are a well respected business and I am certain they will resolve this problem for you in a fast and efficient manner.

Can't wait for it to get back to me so I can see what's happened !

Hi All

I have spoken to Inwoods this afternoon.  They were very helpful and understanding and it's going back tomorrow.  Thanks everyone for all your support and helpful comments.

Interesting to see what the outcome will be? Doesn't the USA version of 2.4 have a higher signal output and not meet EEC regulations? You may never have noticed but for the missing bit of programme....

IF it has analogue throttle trim, then this would probably be a US version.  However, I do believe he has already stated that it has all dig trims.

I will wait for it to come back to me before I can state what happened.

Received the set last night and have confirmed that it is a UK version.

The onboard jumper settings are correct, the firmware version is correct so all I can think of is that the set didn't "take" the factory initialisation correctly.

It allowed me to add the stick mode both in Soft mode (where you can over-ride some of the jumper settings) and in Hard mode (carry out a re-initialisation).

Very weird !  But it is now correct.

Now that statement would worry me!

Well, it's the first instance that I have come across since the 9 series came out some years ago.

So all in all we must be talking a fair few thousand easily.

So it's a case of "blue moon"
