I have spent many hours trying to find a siren, there was company in the States manufacturing one, they stopped production and have now disappeared. So if any one has any ideas please let me know.

This is my first post in this forum so first of all a big „Hello!” to you all!

I am currently building the 80” ESM JU-87D Stuka as well. Absolutely astonishing kit!

It is quite a pity, ESM didn’t do their homework on the background of the paintjob.

The Stuka is painted in the colors of Hans Ulrich Rudels Tankbuster. The colors, right down to the serial on the tail, are correct. Only problem is, Rudel flew a G2 model. There are some small differences between the D5 (the Form of the Wingtips suggest the ESM be a D5) and the G2.

-   The G2 was a designated ground attack Aircraft and had a completely cleaned up wing. There were no dive brakes, no hardpoints. Just those big 3,7cm guns. The dive brakes in the kit actually shouldn’t be in it.
-   The G2 did not have a central bomb rack und thus no bomb. The supplied bomb can be used as a nice 500kg bomb on some 1:7 model but doesn’t really belong on Rudels bird.

Ralf Petrausch in germany makes 1:7 Gunpods for the Stuka as well. From what I have heard they are a bit more scale than the ESM ones. I will keep you posted when they arrive.

Although it is a bit of a sacrilege, putting a Brit engine into a German Stuka, I am planning on using my Laser 150 for the job. Do you guys think it will do the job?

rgds,
Rev

your attention to detail is commendable,     the designation of the base kit is sport scale,   witness warbird mans efforts in the dauntless thread,  this proves that additional  scale is possible for the connoseur,   we just provide a built blank canvas,   and a very good one at that  :)

I absolutely agree!

I will be starting a Build thread in our german warbirdforum.de and if time provides, in the building dept. in this forum too.

I look forward to your build, once completed you will find it is a great plane to fly and if you have any ideas in a siren please let me know, probably not scale, but it is what you expect to hear when you see a Stuka.

Right, got on with the build a bit. I really don't like the tailwheel assembly. a piece of cd-drive-casing, M4 rod, rubber isolation tubing ans some nuts and bolts later...

I drymounted the horizontal stab and Ive come across something weird.

Question @ YT: How do you get that U-Wire into the fuse?  $%& No Way Im drilling a hole large enough to get that lever through from the outside, no way of threading it from the inside...  :banghead:

Thanks in advance!

Sorry, overlooked that Post.

I am going to Salzburg today. Theres a major electronics shop there which also sells security systems. Ill see what they have. My stuka is going to be a "Kanonenvogel" with the guns so no siren.

You slot the tailplane face on the fuselage, this is where the tailplane meets fuselage. When you glue the tailplane in place the slot is covered. You will need to create a small hole at the end of the slot for the wire to rotate in when the tailplane is in place.

Last Saturday it was finally time for maiden.

After deleting the plane from my tx by accident and some 20+ other small problems I was just about to lose my nerve... This is just before I take a bite out of the rudder...

Then finally, after 1,5 hours of prop flipping, the Laser 150 finally came to life. It hasn't been running for a while though.

On the third picture you can see the decals from Tailormade Decals on the belly. They are top notch! I got them from +++ BRS Parts - Bernd Neumayr +++ and they really size them perfectly to the scale you need them. 1:7,somthing scale in this case.

Having checked everything over and over it was time to do some business.

The Stuka tracks nicely with the scale tailwheel and does nice tight turns.

Off to the strip we go...

The flight itself was quite good actually. A bit touchy on elevator but otherwise just fine. After moving the CG about 5mm forward the stuka flies like on rails.

Landing is a dream, with set flaps she can glide for ages and then touches down in a nice three point touchdown. Only thing I don't like is the tendancy to bounce with those hard wheels. I am going to change them to DuBro Big Wheels with Air tires. those should do the trick.

Some Data to end off:

Weight: 6120g
Powered by Laser 150 swinging a 16x10 Prop
All servos Graupner 5077 except Throttle with a small Graupner servo.
R6014FS RX on a UBEC and a 7,4V 2150mAh LiPo

Modifications:
- All servos in the front, Elevator moved by a carbon rod, rudder and tail wheel by pull-pull systems.
- Functional Landing Light (white dot in the left wing (right side in the picture) in Pic 6)
- Custom made Cockpit with 2 self made Pilot busts from Dragon/BBI Luftwaffe Parts (missing on Maiden Flight)
- Complete set of all service markings and stensils by Tailor Made
- Some weathering, some engine residue on the sides of the plane. more details to follow now that I know that she flies.
- 110mm sompound spinner done in authentic RLM22
- Clearcoated everything again with MIPA 2K Matt coating.

Still to come:
- 37mm Cannons from Ralph Petrausch
- Antenna
- MG171 for the rear gunner
- scale exhaust stacks
- Low Bounce Wheels

In summary I must say, that this plane is an awesome flyer and what is more, I finally have a Plane I can recommend as a beginners Warbird! It IS that easy to fly!

Great Stuff, YT!!

Hi all,Martin what size tank are you running with the 180,and what are your approx flight times.I only ask as the saito 180's are known as not that economical on fuel.

I have used the tank out of the kit, bear in mind most of the time you are less than half throttle, flight times, cant say, never ran it dry, certainly more than enough unless you are going for duration.

Right, concidering the Stuka flies well, it is time to get into details.

A very easy but impressive looking mod is the exhaust stacks.

The plastic ones dont really look all thet fab so I got myself a piece of copper fitting. Its a 12mm 90° Angle. First it was sawn in half at a 45° angle and then filled up with that stuff Kids play around with (called plasteline in english too?)

I provisionaly attached the stacks to a piece of thin aluminium and put it on the Stuka.

Now its time to paint them  :af Quite happy with the outcome actually.

To finish the story of my Stuka:

After adding the finishing touches I did the first flights with the big 3,7mm Cannons. Looks awesome in the Air. AUW is 6200g plus fuel.

The Laser 150 is pulling the Stuka around the sky with authority but there is a big difference with and without the guns.

A couple of pics of the outcome.

The thing that really bugs me is the wheelpants hitting the composite part that is glued to the wing. I have now cut the wheel pants in half and am only using the top half.  This is scale as the covers were often left away when flying from those muddy fields on the eastern front.

Ah, found it. A Picture of my custom Landing Gear. The Oleos were made by a friend, they are braced by an aluminium tube.

It has been tested and holds up nicely. Now I don't have to be afraid of every touchdown busting something.  :af ;D

You can see the damage done to the fibreglass part on the right hand side of the second picture. How did the others solve this?

Yes, you definitely must! Great flier with a great scale look!

If I didn't have so much work in the pipeline I would really be tempted to give her a winter camo...

Still very interested in how the others overcame the problem with the busted wheelpants and top liner.

Mine have held up pretty well to date, the wire legs do need bending forward after she ran off the end of the runway a while back.

Like what you have done Reverend...nice job. Looks great with the cannons and pants off, and I would agree, winter camo would set her off real well. I would be tempted to get a can of white spray paint and just mist white patches over it.....giving that real worm paint fade so many sported in the Eastern Front. great Job  :af

To all those flying their Stuka's,
Could some of you please let me know what C of G you are flying at. I've read all the posts on this and other forums, and all say balance as per the manual, but what is the actual number you're using? My manual says 135mm from the leading edge, but ESM are renound for changing the instructions. As an example my manual that came with the kit said nothing about spacing the ailerons/flaps 16mm from the lower skin of the wing, but when I downloaded the manual from ESM's website, there are a few changes. To late, I'd already glued my hinges in and have 10mm. Someone in another forum said he'd spoken to others flying thier Stuka's at 121mm C of G and felt 135mm was too tail heavy, so I'd like some real world proven numbers please. All help appreciated,
Dave.

the drop on the hinges is set by the distance from the mount plate, to the centre of the hinge,  it can be nothing else,    as for the cg,   i am sure someone on here who is flying one will be along to confirm it,    mine is in the box,   so i am no use,

The hinges I set as per the marks on the wing and made sure they where all in line and set at the same height, the CG is as per the book and have found it ideal for me. It will depend on how you like your aircraft, I do prefer a sensitive elevator and then dial in about 40% expo, I certainly would not say she is tail heavy, too nose heavy and you can run out of elevator on a slow approach.
Mine has been flying for about 9 months

Hi!

My Stuka was definitely tailheavy with the CG in the book. I put it 8mm forward and the plane had a totally different flight charakteristic and flew like a trainer.

Thanks guys for your help.
I must have had the Friday kit as when I put my hinges in the wing they all sat at 10mm. Not that it will matter I suppose. Kinverflyer, do you run a 3 blade prop at all. I ask because your running the Saito 180 and I'm still tossing up between an OS 120SIII or OS 200FS. I know the 120FS will be enough power, but I'd really like to run a decent size 3 blade so I'm leaning towards the 200FS. I also fly at 2000ft AMSL and very high ambient temps. Typical temps are 30-43 degrees Celsius here in the middle of Oz for most of the year. I'm a big fan of the Biela props myself and read you were using an 18x8. I was thinking 16x10 or 17x10 3 blade and they don't come in an 8inch pitch. What are your thoughts please. Cheers,
Dave Goodes

I am using a two blade Beila prop on the Saito 1.80 which has more than enough power, most of the flight is at 1/3rd throttle. A 10" pitch is probably more forward thrust than you would want at low revs.

Hi Guys,

Greetings from Singapore!

I'm in dire need of a canopy for the ESM/KMP JU87D Stuka. It's my bad that I accidentally drop the warbird when I'm checking the CG and the canopy shattered.  :'(  I am scheduled to maiden the bird this Saturday.

Really appreciate it if you can point me where I can get the canopy and have it express shipped in Singapore, hopefuly to arrive before Saturday.  :o

Regards.

Hi Guys,

Just to share my JU87D. I got the bits and pieces from my shattered canopy and managed to put the pieces into place and temporarily taped it.

Tried contacting ESM in china for a replacement canopy but they are on Lunar New Year break till Feb 23. Thanks to Wilson Li from Sym-YTI in asking around ESM china to supply me the canopy.  :af

cheers.
