Some video
Of P51D Mustang 'Marinell' from last year at Tibenham.

In a lot of warbird restorations, the restored aircraft does not wear it's original markings.

This Mustang really is 'Marinell'

Dear All

Here is a brief history of Tibenham Airfield

445th BOMBARDMENT GROUP

Constituted as 445th Bombardment Group (Heavy) on 20 Mar 1943.
Activated on 1 Apr 1943. Prepared for combat with B-24's. Moved to England, Oct-Dec 1943,
for service with Eighth AF. Entered combat on 13 Dec 1943 by attacking U boat installations at Kid.
Operated primarily as a strategic bombardment organization until the war ended, striking such
targets as industries in Osnabruck, synthetic oil plants in Lutzkendorf, chemical works in Ludwigshafen, marshalling yards at Hamm, an airfield at Munich, an ammunition plant at Duneberg, under-ground oil storage facilities at Ehmen, and factories at Munster. Participated in the Allied campaign against the German aircraft industry during Big Week, 20-25 Feb 1944, being awarded a DUC for attacking an aircraft assembly
plant at Gotha on 24 Feb. Occasionally flew interdictory and support missions. Helped to prepare
for the invasion of Normandy by bombing airfields, V-weapon sites, and other targets; attacked shore installations on D-Day, 6 Jun 1944. Supported ground forces at St Lo by striking enemy defenses
in July 1944. Bombed German communications during the Battle of the Bulge, Dec 1944-Jan 1945.
Early on 24 Mar '945 dropped food, medical supplies, and ammunition to troops that landed near
Wesel during the airborne assault across the Rhine; that afternoon flew a bombing mission to the
same area, hitting a landing ground at Stormede. On occasion dropped propaganda leaflets and
hauled gasoline to France. Awarded the Croix de Guerre with Palm by the French government for
operations in the theater from Dec 1943 to Feb '945. Flew last combat mission on 25 Apr 1945.
Returned to the US, May-Jun. Inactivated on 12 Sep 1945. Redesignated 445th Bombardment Group

Hi Phil, After attending your last two excellent fly-ins I would hate to miss this one. Due to various distractions its still quite likely I may not have a model to fly, but would like to help out at this one however I can. Very glad to contribute towards the P51, just say when and how much.

At the end of last year I spent some time visiting a dear old chap in a care home who had little time left with us and no family support. He told me during one of our chats how, in the Royal Norfolk Regiment, he had been assigned to guard a Wellington which had crash landed one night on one of the then incomplete runways at Tibenham. It was a bright moonlit night and far too cold to stand outside all night so he climbed into the Wimpey and sat in the pilots seat. After a little while a fighter showed up and started beating up the wrecked bomber, although it didnt fire its guns. Unable to tell if the dark shape was a german or friendly fighter, he leapt out of the Wellington and ran into the adjacent field. The fighter soon disappeared but he felt too scared to seek shelter inside again. Apparently the bomber was later pushed off the runway with bulldozers so the construction work could continue.

Hi All

Just thought, that is if Phil does not mind? I would post an open invitation to attend the War Birds over the Fens flyin on Sunday 6th June 2010 to all that are attending the fantastic Tibenham event the following Friday.

You could use it as a prequel to Tibenham, to air those models ready for Friday.

Check out the FMFC for further details.

What ever the outcome, see you all at Tib on the Friday.

Dear Colin

You are more than welcome to come along as a helper.
We need help during the day manning the TX control etc.

An interesting piece that you posted above.

Gary, as I told you last year when you put your name forward
for the BoB at Colt, this is not an elitist event.

If it was I would not be there.

So yes you are welcome to attends with your puppeteer.

I shall be closing the list shortly and will then be opening a reserve list.

As an aside my good friend Byron A. has put his B17 up for sale,
I was fortunate that Byron let me fly it on a couple of occasions up at Colt.
I can say that it flies very well indeed.

If anyone is interested in the B17, if you let me know I will let you have Byron's details

Below is a picture of the B17.
