Balsa USA 1/3 scale Marane Saulnier

G'day everyone. I'm moving towards building one of these things but, before I set off down the slippery slope of spending money and time, I am wondering if there is anyone out there who has built/flown one and can offer any comment/advice. In particular, what is it like to fly, is the kit OK and the hardware good quality, how long does it take to rig, and are there any worthwhile mods. that can be made to the build? etc etc. Any comments will be very much appreciated.
Cheers, Peter.

Hi Peter, Stuey did have one and Cubanflyer has a kit to build. I'm sure Stu will be along in a bit, but I had a look at the plans with Cubanflyer with a view to making the access hatch on the top front decking, including the c/section struttery to lower the height for transport, also to make the tail surfaces removable so it would go easily between car seats etc. It always seemed to fly well though I remember Stuey cursing a few time when it came to assembly and dismantling. I think he posted a vid of it on Youtube

here was the take off
always needed careful ruddering, particularly with the transition to tail up, and look at all the weight up high with the high u/c..

Many thanks to you all, particularly Stuey. As he said, the common ground of a Camel allowed a good comparison to be made. Through Stuey's vid I also saw a Morane S landing and just as I was thinking "nice one" the x-wind blew it away...................
So it's going to be a Pup.

Hi Peter
If you do build a pup then it will be a stunner. Your Camel was outstanding.
Look forward to seeing that.
Are you going to Bath and West

Peter, I see that you are after a BUSA Pup kit. Phils Pup, my old one, started as one but ended up a bit different, changed wing section, tailplane, u/c, outlines of some of it etc. I'm sure between us we could supply plans, u/c (like that on Phils) cowl, wing and tail sections etc. The quality of the BUSA Pup kit is a little dissapointing since it is an ancient design, but they do fly extremely well.

Peter
I would echo Ians comments, whilst my Pup was built with a particular plan, i,e it needed to suffer long hours of containerised transport (YES Ian that is why my leading edges are a little chubby) the kit did leave quite a bit to be desired. Ian's, Ceejays and Rugsleys models all have had a fair bit of modification to them. if you want I can throw mine in the van and you can have a look at it when we meet, and as Ian's going to be with us he could explain the mods required , does that help ?
