With the business & a 10 month old to contend with........RC models are about it for me these days.

In the past howover, I was an avid cricketer.......right arm medium fast outswing......shin splints, 2 knee injuries and lack of time put paid to that, though I did do some school coaching back in my secondary school teaching days (I also county trialed aged 18)

Also did a lot of cycling (Mountain not road) in my college/Uni days........raced the Eastern Winter Series for 2-3 seasons in the early 90's, never very good, but was a good laugh. Cost of race bikes and the fact the 4/5 I used to race with all went our separate ways saw that die a death as well. Best 'accomplishment' was cycling Pen-Y-Ghent, Ingleborough & Wenside on 3 consecutive days.........(Still have a nice shiney Cannondale in the shed though!!)

Played Alto & Tenor Saxophone in my school and 6th form days......still have the Alto, but not picked it up in 15 yrs.

Did a lot of hill walking & climbing in school/college/Uni days.........DofE Gold etc etc. Still enjoy a leisurely wander out in the hills when we get chance.

Hmmm - are there any model flyers who DON'T play guitar?

PDR

tried it - bought bert weedons play in a day - realised i was never going to be another Clapton so did a Pete Townsend with it (very satisfying - a watkins rapier 44) as for other hobbies - ph0tograpy, watching cricket (used to play but knees and back wont allow it now), darts (badly) snooker (even worse) not bad at drinking though so long as its real ale.

Ah yes- the imbibement of alcoholic beverages in the pursuit of pleasure. A hobby I really do enjoy!

Will be making a few gallons of apple wine in the near future.

If anyone's got a good and easy recipe for a nice red I'd love to hear about it.

Bought my watkins off of a mate whod just bought a wem sapphire - which was rather styled like a burns - from memory there were three versions of t he rapier the 22 33 and 44 which in a masterpiece of marketing had two, three and four pickups. I guess they were popular as they were cheap and cheerful - bells music in ewell in surrey used to flog them - spent ages drooling over t heir catalogue. they also did a range called futuramas which from memomory were pretty awful. the other reason i bought my watkins is that it was left handed.

The Rapier was actually rather good for the money. £29 19s 11d

A Strat owner once offered to swap trems with me.

Bonded neck too IIRC, not like those crummy Fenders with just four 6" nails.  ;)

Being left-handed, I've never owned a "big name" guitar. I do have a Westbury Standard (bought for £80 when I was a student), an Aria Pro II semi-acoustic, a miked up 6 sting acoustic and a lovely sounding Tanglewood 12 string acoustic.

Do you mean you rode all three each day on each consecutive day?  Or one of them on each day.  Tim Gould, the son of a guy we go cycling with most weeks, made a habit of winning the annual 3 Peaks Cyclo Cross race.  That's not ridden on mountain bikes but he was also an international professional mountain bike race as well.

Cycling has always for me been about touring with the odd race thrown in for amusement.  My wife raced a lot more than I did.  The racing just made cycle camping in places like the Alps and Pyrenees a lot easier :)

1 per day on 3 consecutive days Geoff...............

I remember the name Tim Gould well........he was heavily featured in all the MTB mags around the time I was riding, I seem to remember he was a bit of a hillclimb specialist?

Lest we forget... The modellers  apparent guitar of choice..

Want one again, want one again, can I have one Dad can I have one Dad
.
Actually, I've just been inspired for my latest indoor model.. Stick enough power on and anything will fly... I know , I have a flying truck...  Glide angle zero  degrees, vertically down when the power stops...

And the other picture is of my DX7 vintage keyboard to fly it with  ;D ;D

That looks a later model to my Rapier 3.

It had bar pick-ups and a weird selector switch arrangement.

I bought mine circa 1961 - my Dad had to sign the HP forms.

I traded "up" to a Burns Sonic. Bad move.  :banghead:

Seen here demonstrating "C major" - my other two chords are classified.

Here you go.. some rapiers.. The one in the box appeared on eBay.. I would have bought it if I had known, it was brand new..one lady owner..stuck under the bad,

Rapier 22 and 33 pics plus a rare Rapier custom... Never played one of these.

The reason some Rapiers looked different was there were Mk 1 and Mk 2 versions and also some had Wilson on the tremolo plate and No Watkins logo on the scratch plate.. I'm assuming these were custom versions, but Im not absolutely sure.

I'm another, was amusing when I turned up for nets at my last club, they heard the Scottish accent and assumed wrongly....

I was fortunate enough to open the bowling for all the stations I was based at, even managed to play for the RUC. Played club cricket at Kidlington in the Cherwell league (before they got kicked out for cheating) RAF were kind enough to send me on the ECB combined services coaching course. An evening of which was spent on the sauce with John Embury. I was fortunate to play alongside the RAF captain/ Combined services opener at RAF Benson...

Sadly surgery for a subacromial decompression was the beginning of the end, I was advised to give up or not enjoy full use of my shoulder when I am old.

I miss playing, but I have a young family. That coupled with being in pain at the end of every game was enough for me. Still managed a five for and two retired hurt in one of my last games though  :''

It was only village cricket at the time, but 6 overs, 5 maidens, 5 for 1 (and the 1 was a wide :D) were my best figures!!

Played twice a week for a good 6-7 yrs........normally averaging 3 wickets a game at no more than 3 an over.

Model boating - fast electric, own design and best fun is the yachting comps.
Also photography, fiddling with electronics, helping my children with cars etc..

Also supporting senior management with her animal rescue activities, and walking with our own dogs.

Best game I had was 54 with the bat then a 5 for not a lot bowling. Best with the bat was 96, that included smashing a spinner back over long on for 6 when I was on 90  :D  He bowled me as I tried to sweep a straight one next ball  ;D
