Hi all,

I have finally finished my Farmhand 90, it seems to have taken ages compared to my usual turnout time, still it its done now. I have had to move all the Nicads as far forwards as I can and still need some lead for CofG and i'm hoping that those self adhesive jobs that tyre services use will do. Below are attached some pictures taken before its first flight.

I have got some larger wheels for it but just not fitted them yet as I would like some a little bigger than the ones I have spare.

Hi BB,

I did indeed get my glass undercart from http://www.carboncopyuk.com/acatalog/Carbon_Copy_Products.html  the product I used was CCU21 but to get it in a White glass finish you need to email them. The Tank I am using is a Dubro 20oz with a petrol bung not the supplied one. I have used a CRRC GF50i and i have made a hatch just between formers 1+2, however with hindsight it could have been a bit bigger. I have placed under the front hatch 2x3300 6v Nicads and a 4.8vAA pack for the CDI. You can probably just see it in the pics.

If you would like to come and see mine you are welcome, just pm me.

Phil

Hi guys mine is finished i'll get some pics up soon but mine is a heavy lump i don't know how she got so big a total auw of 26lbs on the nose. WOW althogh i did increase the wing to a true 90 span. and used slightly heavier balsa on the tail to take the knocks of the tow line. trial flights this comming weekend i hope. i'll see if my 45cc engine is man enough or if i will need to save for a 62cc engine.

Is the upper sheeting from the cabin to the tail 1/4"?

Having rarely used the flaps on my previous tugs, 2 Biglifts and a Wilga, are there any detrimental effects if I were to omit them?  Where I fly, if it's not blowing a gale then the tow line provides sufficient drag for landings.

Finally, I have an old Fuji 43.  However, I'm thinking of either a Mackay 45 or the new OS 33.  What would be the most suitable choice for towing, at the biggest, a 1/4 scale vintage glider?

Hi smurraytwinn

I would not skip the flaps: they have enormous effects on the flying speed of the model.  I use them every time, no matter how much the wind is blowing.  My set-up is such that I can deflect them nearly 80 degrees, and then they generate so much drag that you can virtually hear the squeeling of the breaks when you put them on.

I have a Moki (Makay) 45 in mine and it seems to have enough power for any glider.  Usually when I tow them it is like taking the elevator: straight up.

Steve,
Have you made any progress with a two piece wing? I have put my wing construction on hold for the moment as I really need a two piece for storeage and transportation.

Well my Farmhand 90 arrived last week...and Im trying to find time to start construction hopefully during the festive season (if SWMBO gives me time off for good behavior  >:()

Ive been following the "Stick it with Steve" DVD and cant wait to get started...Ive even cleared a room waiting to start.

Can anyone provide a quick list of the total wood quantitys that are needed ? I know there is a "list" at the start of the document (but no actual quantitys), but I will need to place an internet order - the cost of Balsa is almost 3 times the cost here than in the UK, so Id like to place a single order... :uk:

This will be my first semi kit. All the rest have been ARTFs or Kits..so I dont necessarily have a large amount of off-cuts...

Dusted mine off today (literally). It has been sat on the top of the wardrobe in the bedroom since November 2010.  :embarassed:

The progress to date had been the main construction of the fuselage.

Today I added the rear top and side sheeting.

Also made up the servo box for the rudder which is let into the top rear decking. You can just see in the bottom picture the location.

Should have gone flying today, but the building bug was firmly rooted and so I did some more.

Fitted the cowl retention devise!

Cut the rear end out for fin and tail, along with the servo bay.

Looks like this now.

Trial fitted some undercrakers.

Not sure about just using self tappers on the undercart as prescribed by Steve.

Hi NSS,
Just a note to say that my FH 90 required a bit of lead up front with a CRRC 50 even with 2 x 3200mA 6v Nicads and the CDI nicad under a hatch between f2 and f3. makes it so much easier to do now.

Can I ask you how you secured your undercarriage ?

Nice Kev, but I can only see one hatch and thats the tank / toffee access. Mine has an additional hatch forward of that just over the nose of the tank. If I can add a picture of mine you can just make out the switch for the CDI.

Boogar!!

I can still put a hatch in :xx

Can I take it then that the CDI and ignition battery are on top of the tank bay then?

Thats right, 2 x 3200mA sub"C" Nicads one behind the other length across the fuselage and the 2600mA 4.8v AA Nicad slips down the side between tank box and fus side. Don't forget to tie a piece of string or something around it to enable you to remove should you need to.

My CDI is inside the tank box to one side suitable protected.

I am also going to fit one of those small Rcexl engine cutoffs in this area too.

Hi ya `ol Farmhands, I`ve started building my FH 90 and so far have nearly finished the fus`, but, I do not have the DVD only the magazine and this build thread for reference.
I would like to see how the wing bolts are spaced and wjhat type is being used (metal/plastic?) If any of you have a picture or two that would help me I would be very gratefull.
Also, how many U/C bolts are required? I am using a CF composite that I have spare, but it is only 5" X 1 7/8ths plate area where it joins the fus`. I have marked out for five bolts in a three/ two config, will number plate bolts suffice or do I need metal bolts to t/ nuts?
Not decided on covering yet as there is going to be quite a few at our club trying to give different `characters` to each.
