You should have tried flying when these were in vogue - centring wouldn't have been an issue I can tell you  ;D

Here's my experiences:

Always thought 5125 was a great servo for the money. Had a few models, with no problems. Then bought a few last year and had hassles with them re centring. Based on that and what others have experienced, it seems that they were spot on, but have had a bad patch. I don't buy the gear moan though. Read a post on RCG that said: "5125s are rubbish! No other servo would have stripped the gears in that crash!" Oh dear oh dear oh dear  ;D nuff said on that one!

Hyperion arms and ball links: yes they flex, but not terminally badly. My Strega is set up this way. Flown it lots, and had a DS flight with it a couple of weeks ago that was at least 45 minutes of continuous acro DS. Nothing fluttered. However, I wouldn't recommend using those arms in an Opus MCT. But on 95% of installs, I don't see a problem. With a clevis rather than a ball link, it's a non issue.

Aftermarket metal arms: I have a solution. Then before I pushed the button on making them I was told that Hyperion are working on something. So I'm waiting on further information. If I don't have an answer by June, I'll make a batch of my own.

Lastly, with radio gear - a pal of mine always says: They are all brilliant until you have a bad one. Then they're all rubbish.

Completely agree with that in terms of how people go about critiqueing radio gear! I think that everyone has a point. However, I do think that the centreing issue on the Hitecs is a recent thing, so basing an opinion on that particular issue isn't getting the whole picture unless you've had some from new in the last 12 months.

Anyway, everyone can only post based on their experience. No need to get one's pants on one's head if one's own experience doesn't align with anothers  ;)

Tom, at the risk of being labelled as jumping to the defence of a friend - I would advise you that it pays to know your 'enemy'. Especially as you in aeromodelling terms are still a bit green and wet behind the ears. We all know you are quite opinionated but perhaps not many have sussed out that you are also relatively inexperienced when it comes to having a broad knowledge of radio controlled equipment,  how it comes be be laid at your disposal for use in model aircraft and if I'm honest, aeromodelling in general. Tread carefully here Tom and when modellers with the experience of Steve et al point something out to you, take a little more notice with credence to the fact that unlike you, they HAVE seen it all before.

Just sayin'

Andy
Well, I go out for the morning and all hell has broken loose in this thread $%&.

I've often bemoaned the fact in the past that inexperienced flyers can offer opinions on forums as though they have vast experience >:(.  Recent posts by some of the "experienced" brigade, however, have been so ill-informed, and really, just plain bitchy and contrary that I really wonder if experience is much darn use after all if that's the kind of results we get >:(..

What an "interesting" thread - if only there was a popcorn smiley...   ;)

I find myself split on this one. I've had 125s in a couple of planes, and my experience is mostly good – 2x stripped gears from 4 servos in two 60 inchers, but I suspect they were more down to hanger rash in transit followed by a less than greaser landing  :embarassed:. On the other hand I do know lots of fliers who do have a –ve opinion of them; they seem to be a marmite piece of kit.

The single set of 5125s for my HP60 went straight back, but that wasn't because of centring, slop or geartrain issues; I didn't like that they sought the "last known good" position even without an Rx signal (a few people on RCG had seen them burn through a foamie wing when stalled). I went with 3150s which don’t have this characteristic, but they’re thicker, slower and have got slightly sloppy (though not enough to be noticeable in flight, even with the minute elevator movements needed – I still rate them highly).

Putting personal experiences aside, what little data we have suggests there was some kind of design issue in the original versions – if there wasn’t, why have two attempts at redesigning the geartrain?  $%& I know iterative product improvement goes on all the time, but I’m not aware of other servos (Hitec or otherwise) being redesigned to improve torque or speed by a small % (or maybe this just isn’t visible to us?).  That plus the fact the 125 was many peoples introduction to thin wing servos (and the need to handle/operate them more carefully to protect the geartrain) is probably what got them their mixed reputation. That may now also be being compounded by an unrelated QC problem at the factory giving the double centring issues.

Ultimately, you pays your money and takes your choice; I will probably be using 125s again, but based on the weight of evidence I’ll be steering clear of the 5125s at least for now.

Right, time to stop applying geeky 6 sigma knowledge and get back to work!

Matt

FWIW - I borrowed an older 5125 with the non-brass output gear to replace the one that went full-travel - so I could race the next day at Eastbourne last June - that too wandered off-centre during the day - and that was the best of the bunch that the owner (Mike Shellim) could find for me.

It seems that Hitec finally took on board the "feedback" about "weak" output gears & changed them (but never told anyone about the change) - but nothing has been done about the centring problems.

You want to try getting a refund on 4 servos that have had wires cut off and mounting lugs, then sanded / epoxied into a wing!!

I was told that I should of checked them before I cut and glued, but that was just the point. There were no issues unless you changed the tempratures you were working them in, it's fine trimming on the floor in the sun (carbon wings get nice and hot even in winter) but once flying around they soon cool down( ever landed with ice on your wings) and that's when the 5125s start re centering.

I had to threaten to go down small claims route. 3 out of my 4 were un fit for purpose, but the dealer said he would send all 4 back claiming they were faulty. Got a refund in the end so all was ok.

So if I accept that having to re trim £140 worth of wing servos before each flight is normal can some one tell me if I should set the offset on the flaps when they are cold or warm? Because re trimming will alter the endpoints and give diferent flap throws! Unless that's normal too?

Yum Yum, These Korean meat balls really are the dogs bollox.

Jeeeeesus Keeeerist. I've resisted the temptation to throw my hat in the ring, as, predictably, it's turned into a plonker measuring fight, as always.

How long does this tired old debate about Hitec servos have to rumble on for?
If you don't like the bleedin' things, then don't buy 'em!!!!

Personally, my woeful disregard for the nuances of 2.4gig dom, has killed more airframes than duff servos of late !!

Surprise surprise, flying weather's not upon us again. With all the lovely weather we've had lately, I haven't had to lock a thread in ages!

Anyway, both "sides" have points. Let's all accept that and keep it civil shall we lads?

They're only ruddy servos chaps! If you really insist on getting all aerated about it, then I'll arrange a Sloperacer Forum of Forums Bunfight where you can all wrestle it out in the bog at the bottom of the Wrecker.

But I will say one thing. Chicks dig a nicely centreing servo  :af

Went to the model shop & returned the 'strange' servo & bought a new one.
Test flew today at Carlton bank-no problems as yet :xx Really good afternoon of flying, its the 1st time I've really chucked the Mistral about & 1st time off a slope, very impressed how it carries its speed & it sounds awsome (like a banshee) on low fast passes ;D
