Hi Guys, I will be hopefully ordering a flying fish from t9 on thursday/friday, I was wondering, do they come with a hardware pack i.e control horns? If not what type should i use plus where can i get them from?

Cheers,

evening, well mine came with the horns, just had to get a carbon push rod for the elevator & I made a ply tray for the elevator servo.

havnt had much chance to fly mine yet but the couple of quick test flights I have had it seems well good.

T9 were good to deal with as well.

They come with horns to fit captive nuts in the ailerons. the elevator horn is a little weak and you might think about replacing it.
You will need a pushrod and I can reccommend the optional servo tray and ballast set.

Not without modding the tray. I used a AAA 800mAh Eneloop.

Steve - I run 4x 2000 AA in mine, but I had to modify the servo tray as Andy mentions.  I think I cut about 2 inches off mine.

If you were considering geting the giant cod Emax servos - dont bother, the Hitec ones are better and consume a lot less juice.  For a similar about of flying, I put 600mAh back in to the batteries in the fish and 480mAh back in to the battery in the Alex which has 6x 5065's in it!

Youre going to love the fish - it's click flickity good :D

I heard a rumer Wob was getting one too...  :''

Ah right lol, Try assigning switch (SW on the tx) to "mix" to P-Mix 5 and 6 (should have mixes "AILE-> THRO and AILE-> GEAR) This should assign it to the switch on the right (rudder D/R)  :af

Hi guys, I'v started the fish build  :) But i'v hit a snag, I have been trying to screw the control horns into the nuts in the ailerons, But they just won't go in, It's as if they are being cross-threaded but i know for a fact they are not, the only thing i can think of is the nut is smaller than the screw... Has anyone got any ideas?  $%&

Check for a burr or gunk in either thread? Or a folded section of thread.

I can't see in there, I'v been trying to get both horns to screw in to both ailerons all day, and they just won't go in, i'v tried it to many times now that the nut in one of the ailerons is now just spinning, and there's no way i can get it out without cutting it out and probably ruining the aileron... I just don't know what to do now...  $%&

Dremel slots through them and make horns from G10 board. They'll be better anyway. IMHO YMMV etc...

It's all sorted now  :) I cut the nuts out and re-glued them in the "proper" position, drilled out the holes to make them slightly larger and then locked the horn with cyano to stop it unscrewing...  :) Cheers for all your advice though guys  :af

Well I managed to get out yesterday in the purbecks with a good 25-30mph ssw and give the fish a good belt round, being my first mouldie thou Ive got a question for the more experianced flyers,

No ballast and with a auw of 868gms, c of g at 88mm from the leading edge, i needed to have 1mm of elevator up trim while flying, trying several dive tests it flys neutral ie just keeps going were I point it.

so, is that normal and do I leave it as it is ? or move the c of g back abit more or pack the leading edge to give it a bit more positive incidence ?

The Fish build is going well :) I'v got the servo board in, the elevator servo in,glued the elevator control horn in, bolted the elevator on, made up the elevator control rod and put it in and glued the aileron servo's in, just got to do the flaps and it's done  i'm not too sure how to do the flaps as they are bottom hinged... how should i go about it? has anyone got any pic's of their set-ups?

Cheers,
Steve

Bird60 set up here (very similar)

http://t9hobbysport.com/static/birdpics/Bird_60_fitout.pdf

You need to get the hole in the horn a bit forward of the hinge line by a couple of mm and the main thing is to get them identical. Saves a lot of playing around with the Tx later. See Isoarit's definitive sticky on flap installs,

I've just jumped on the FF bandwagon and ordered one up, a 4 servo wing.

Being fairly noobish, can anyone help me out a little and answer these for me please  :embarassed:

Q1: recommend which type of contol to use on the elevator... carbon rod (do you just CA them up to size and fit through a guide tube?!), or use threaded rod through a guide tube with an L bend at the horn end?  How long will they have to be also please for ordering purposes.

Q2: Which clevises size for the 4 wing servos (HS65mgs), m2.5, m3 - all as good quality as the rest?

Q3: Which UK model shops (non ebay ones) would you recommend for these parts, I've aquired some right tat in the past going the cheap cheap route.

Q4: What's a good 5 or 10 min epoxy for the majority of the build, ie ballast tube to servo tray, wing seat aperture ply mod etc? I've got one epoxy that never sets hard  :o

I'll consider making up my own pcb material horns as the supplied don't seem to be very well received - agree? Frontside use only.

thanks for any help guys, sorry for so many questions at once.

Ross

I only have a 2 servo wing but:

Q1 I used a 6 mm carbon tube for pushrod as I had it spare epoxied in some thereaded rod and used sullivan clevises with lock nuts

Q2 I used M2.5 metal clevises on the rons.

Q3 I tend to use Inwood Models for supplies or visit (quite a trek) either Model Exchange or STeve Webbs if I am not sure what I want and need to have a browse.

Q4 I used (shock horror prepare to be shot down) Zap and kicker for the ballast tube and tray install seems to be working fine and 5 10 min epoxy to hold the tube to the ply

WIth regards the horns brass one OK ele is a bit flimsy but I used it and have had no probs (yet)

perfect jon, thanks very much for that.

This is rapidly turning into an expensive 'experimental dip the toe in' passtime... a new Tx was also required for the flap mixing as my previous 6ex 2.4 is rubbish.  I'm just chuffed each new & increasingly expensive / fragile plane is a sure fire investment without risk.

Couple of things I forgot to mention (not wanting to teach about sucking eggs and all that  ;)) but dont forget to key the threaded rod before epoxying it in the carbon push rod, I just roughed mine up a bit with a Dremel to give it a key.

Also I laminated some carbon lengthways under the wing root for a bit of extra support/strength (I know many others have also doen this as it is a weak point (or certainly was on the early ones)

Cheers Jon, yeah I've read up about the FF and its letterbox wingseat cavern - that'll be getting rounded off and the carbon treatment for certain.   was also thinking about running some carbon strips top & bottom up the fuse from the tail hole, can't do any harm if they fit (after looking at cliffhanger's tail disagreement in the mom racing section!).
--
Clint - cheers for the offer but I'm sticking with Futaba 2.4 (mostly since I've started collecting their overpriced Rxs if that's logical). not as popular as multiplex / DX but I've opted for the 8FG, has a glider proramme mode so it'll keep me happy for a bit - ordered it at the start of the week.  What you upgrading to, mpx 2.4 all round??
See you up the hill as soon as the wind co-ops.

What's the concensus as far as the elevator control horns... make your own from PCB material then dremmel a slot/epoxy, or use traditional plastic jobbies that you drill holes for with the wee plate on the top side?
PS anybody be kind enough to post a close up of their elevator from underneath and possibly the flap horn??  Thanks fellas
