Hey Chaps,

second attempt at posting, my pics were too big so just moaned at me and lost my text :(....any way....I'll use my own web space :)

My mate and I had an idea to try to come up with simple to make gliders for sloping and small ds site practice. My alula can't take a blow (I don't care if you think it can, I don;t think its the right tool...plus its had its node boken off too many times already with my idiocy). I had a Mugi evo made of 2mm twin wall...it flies....it was easy to put together (I don't like building much), so I suggested twin wall. I ordered some from Mugi, it turned up yesterday afternoon.

Few hours of hammering and spannering I have come up with this :)

260g AUW, 800mm wing span.

Hopefully will fly it tomorrow.

Now that's imaginative - I reckon it'll be quick to - wing must be ultra thin?

It is quite thin, was trying to get it fatter but it creases. The twin core bends better with the flutes long ways, but the sheet was cut the other way. Might try making the wings separately next time so I can bias the flutes.

At the root  its about 25mm thick, not measured it yet...was literally an eye ball job.

The Rule I used for the elevons was to draw around my steel rule....pun intended! Then I cut the ends angles to suit the tip and what looked ok at the other.

I have loads of 1.5mm carbon, so used that in the flutes to stiffen the elvons up.

The pinned hatch idea and much of the constuction method was stolen from the Mugi.

Stu that is so much better than the bunch of cack that I put together..... I reckon your twinwall is better than mine. Mine feels really really soft and rubbish..... That actually looks like it'll be a right laugh. Can you make me one ;D I've given up with sodding twin wall  :embarassed:

:). The stuff I have isn't that rigid. Although we compare.

If it flies ok and you like the look of it in the flesh I will make you one :), might even try my staples idea on yours (again stolen from mugi....from their stapled twinwall packaging lol).

Just used a rule. it's abou 18mm thickness at the middle and 8mm at the tip.

A SPAD!! Luv it!

I used to make up shizzle like that from correx all the time, came up with some crazy sh*t.... my fav being a totally over powered twin engined plank, man did that thing go.... just a shame that when an engine cut you had to cut the other... and thenit became a very fast moving (in a downward fashion) brick  :o... they said I was crazy... maybe a little  :D...

Looking great Stu  :af

I think he was saying that now that I (bedfo) have the hump with correx, i'm gonna make me a sally!

However before I start going mad and cutting wings for a kevlar Sally, I think I need to confess to being an eeejit. Now i assumed that the flutes should run along the wing like loads of mini spars. However just been messing with some after seeing the pics of your wing and it works loads better if the flutes run from LE to TE. So I think I may give correx another chance and have another go with the flutes going the other way. OOPS!

Still, I will make a sally at some point, in fact blow me i'm gonna do a correx sally to begin with!

haha wicked. Counter intuitive...but it seems that flute long ways is better. holds a better shape without buckling.

SPAD Sally aye! nice

I had one of these a good few years ago - went very nicely and I hauled out the plan to make another just a few days ago!

More info here - he also has plans for two larger sizes.

Pops I actually do work in the Aerospace industry, and sadly I know exactly where you are coming from. To design and make Stu's little correx wing at our place would take years, and it'd cost millions!!

aaaahhh I see what you're saying

Problems with making a Sally with Correx would be achieving the right wing section, correx is a really difficult material to accurate or even remotely replicate a wing section.

Its the section that make Sally work and without it I fear you'll end up with something that doesnt match the performance you'd get with a proper hot wire foam cut section.

i've played with correx ALOT, its brilliant for a plan that doesnt need an accurate section i.e powered by whatever means, but making a glider like Sally from corrrex where the section has a huge impact is a bit wiffy to say the least.

Theres a thread over on RCG where a few people are building a Sally and BillScott (he's on this forum) is looking at cnc cutting some cores, if you want a Sally I'd highly recommend either getting someone to cut you some cores or cut your own.

Steve

I'll definately make a foam sally soon, but I went ahead and started the correx sally this morning, lets be honest a correx glider aint ever gonna be efficient so what the heck, the planform is sensible, I doubt it'll be any worse than any other correx bodge up!

I am back in the game! ;D

She Flies! And pretty nicely too considering. I guessed on throws, had a dual rate set on elevator (something I don't normally do, but thought it safer). Ade thought she was nose havy from a few tosses in his hands, so pulled off the external lead I put on to make tweaking easier. Then chucked her, and it kinda just flew, needed a bit of trimming, but once trimmed moved quite nicely and was predictable and did what I asked. went up well too when thermals rolled through. Actually switched to high rates for mucking about, and was fine if a touch overly responsive. Ade had a go, and he didn't complain :).

Landed and had a few issues with the battery and lead wandering aroun on impact....only taped it so I could move it easily. got that all fixed again. I think its a bit nose heavy, nnow I know it flies I will secure the lead and battery (4 cell 2/3aaa) more permanantly.

Then to the area of sky this is intended for, the back of the rampart. I am (very very) new to DS, so takes me a while to get my head/thumbs sorted. Switched to low elevator rates again, Once I relaxed I was stringing a few circuits together. Had a couple meetings with the ground, had re locate the lead and bat :)....lead ended up down the wing lol. Ade had a go, I egged him after he said he didn't want to break it. I drank my can of pop, and then took it back.

Took a vew videos on my phone, but the last one shows a bit of front and back, and my last landing (its fine other than the mobile lead issue again lol). This after noons job is to tape the bat and glue it in, and glue the lead in. And then make an external belly tray for lead sheet :). I will use the pinned method as per the hatch.

Its about 30Mb, I will upload it onto Vimeo, I can't reencode it to something smaller.

I think the vid says it all, it flies amazingly well for a 5hr bodge up! No nasty habits and DS's in the rampart pretty well. Now just need to get the circuits perfect for some faster fun!!

Cheers Pops! Its been fun. I can't beleive a couple quids worth of plastic plus a couple of quids worth of cheapy servos can be so entertaining :).

Just added a ballast/cg adjust bay on the belly. I have some lead sheet that so happens to be near as damn it 2mm. I can vary the weight between 255g empty now and 300g full.

I am hoping to do a glass or kevlar over blue foam version sometime. Will be intersting to compare!

Lookig forward to seeing Ades SPAD sally and mini dsing together :)
