Thanks guys for all the help, I managed a rather ragged hover today, so the main stuff is in the right sockets. I now have issues with the rudder authority, I think head speed related. Maximum left rudder will not bring the tail back. So I'll try some trusted advice from the club tomorrow. (Yes; the gyro does work and in the right direction).
Life as a fixed wing flyer was so easy, not used to having to engage the brain so intently for this rotary stuff.
Thanks again for your help, I'll keep you appraised of progress.

Yeah, it can be a pretty steep learning curve to get a heli in the air.  Really fun and rewarding, though.

If you haven't already seen them the videos on this page are excellent:

This one in particular should tell you all you need to know to sort the tail out:

B**ger me !
Seems I've taught myself with the tail stick moving in the wrong sense compared to everyone else, watching the tail not the nose, so intense course required on the simulator to re-teach the brain to move correctly subconsciously.
The guys at the club did get the curves set differently and better compared to my attempts, also showed me how to remove the jumps on the Thr Hold engagement, as mentioned in the previous Payne 1967 post.
Also continued with some tail control problems only made worse by changing the movement sense and not having the gyro instructions at the field :banghead:. Forget the learning curve this is more like cliff climbing :'( :ev; still keeps the brain active and fully engaged.
