Sorry guys, but this area is not my field of experience and I am looking to you guys to give me a few pointsers, well lots of pointers really.

The honest truth is that I never thought I would be interested in anything glider related as it just wasn't my thing, I was more into 3D and freestyle flying petrol planes and shockies, however, recenly having accquired an ST Models Blaze, how wrong could I be.

The Blaze has been quite an eye opener on how fast and agile a glider can be, however, its foam, and its control surfaces at speed are virtually non existant.  :''

What I am after is some type of "hot / warm liner" type model, that goes like a rocket, doesn't lose control surfaces at speed and will be good for aerobatics.

Please remember when replying I know absolutely NOTHING about this subject, so all replies in plain, user friendly, numpty english please.  :af

Ah, also, I am not looking to spend a fortune on this, I just am looking around at what the next step may be, before going into things like FVK bandit which has caught my eye, but feel its a bit pricey to be starting things with.

Any suggestions please on what I "could" get next?

Cheers
Steve

You do realise that this is the start of a process that will see you standing on a hillside with the wind blowing in your face about to throw £1000 of carbon and kevlar off ?

Here are a few options (in order of rapidly increasing price) -

Multiplex Blizzard
Filip 400 Sport
TyphoonTyphoon or Mini-Graphite
Graphite 2e
Big Ceres

Yup, I had kinda realized by the price of these things that if this is something I really enjoy, then it could start to get rather pricey  :o

After looking at the Flip 400, I have to ask, what is an MH32 wing section?  $%&

To be honest Steve, I don't know how much market space there is between an FVK Bandit and a ST models blaze.  I would have thought the FVK bandit is not that expensive?

mh32, rg14, are just types of aerofoil. I don't think you can describe it in words, as it's just a shape.  RG14 was designed by a bloke called Rolf Girsberg.  To generalise I would say it's considered a "fast" wing section found on some mouldies/hotliners and DS models etc.  But obviously it's only part of aeroplane design.

mh32 is a wing section designed by a bloke called Martin Hepperle, it well known for thermal models and all rounders.

Yes i thought it would be about that much.  I guess you could get it to go pretty quick without spending a fortune due to small size/low weight.

Another vote for the Flying Fish - excellent value, well worth the money.

Another favourite of mine which is also good value and a great performer is the Microfloh either std. or XL (I had an XL)

Just looked at those on here Model Maniacs and it says they are obsolete?

Its also a tad over what I would initially like to outlay, was thinking tops £200 for the model, plus power set up plus rc setup.

Is it an issue if I use 2.4GHz with some of the gliders out there?

if you can get a Flying fish for £145,  I would think it would be a better performer.  IIRC they come with a motor ring. But you would need to modify the fuselage.  Ask T9 if they come with a e-fuse though.

I don't think any of the models mentioned will have a problem with 2.4ghz

Not sure I like the idea of something without a rudder (though I have not checked any of the others out to see if they have one). And I cant find any details on the costs or who sells the Micro floh ?  $%&

Make sure your choice has a mainly glass (or kevlar, but I doubt if you will get a kevlar fuse in the price bracket that you are considering). You can install 2.4 in carbon fuses, but then you are into external antennas.

my 2p - extra el-cheapo option:
make up some balsa ailerons for the Blaze - stiffer than the foam stuff - may help to up the roll rate?
Maybe some X-weave tape on the rest of the wing too - done at 45 degrees, stiffen them up too.

Leccy stuff does come up on BMFA and fleabay - been some fairly recently

If you were tio ask this question over at RC Groups you will get a thread like THIS
Time and time again the Bandit is still recomended.
I've not got or ever had one so cannot comment.
From a bit of research though it's as cheap as you can go to get a strong capable airframe.
It will fit budget gear (bigger/heavier) to give you over 1Kw of power if you want.
Video of 1Kw budget gear (Ie Giant Cod stuff)

I would say if it's hotlining you want then a Bandit is a good starter which you can upgrade power wise as your experience increases.
If you want to glide more whilst at height or have a more stable platform look at the GP Siren reviewed HERE.

Hope that helps a little.
I have a MPX Blizzard (similar to your Blaze) which has given me a taste for power! Im hoping to upgrade but you'll soon realize it's a very expensive game when you require geared inrunners and 6s packs etc!!

just for information,I have had both a filip 400 sport and a bandit and they are very different beasts. The bandit is by far the most hotliner ish of the two.the filip slows down too much due to its light weight and has little energy retention.
The filip 400 sport is not much of a different machine than a blaze, although i have never had a blaze but i am assuming its a foamie hotliner.

Go for the Bandit,3s lipo 10x6 -11x7 prop and a 500watt motor (wound to suit)and you will have a grin on your face for months...Chris

PS..until you upgrade to a 1000w then it will come back again..the grin that is!

I'm based by Cambridge, my local is Ivinghoe Beacon (just the other side of Dunstable).

Its about a 60 mile journey each way, so I take a thermos, butties, a selection of gliders (the wind strength has a habit of changing!) and a charger plus 12V battery (though I go with everything charged, and have never _needed_ to recharge anything).

So, a 60 mile journey there, I spend the day flying (get maybe 6 hours stick time) then 60 miles home again - knackered but with a great big grin plastered over my face :-)

Once sloping bites you, you'll think nothing of driving over to say Malvern if the wind is favourable - you have been warned!

RC Groups 'search' is your friend for this type of thing....................  Bandit or Siren?

Puffin do the Sprinter, Fillip 600 or X-Treme which can all accomodate a set up to go fast.  Although I think you'll find a search wil reveal the Bandit is somewhat capable of more speed?

I was in the Bottisham club for a year, when I was flying fixed wing ic.

Well, in fact I have sloped a little on Newmarket Heath!

Calling it a slope is a bit of an exageration, its more a gentle rise, but with something lightweight it is fly-able (bit different to standard slope soaring, hence heading over to Ivinghoe).

There are also some  coastal sites, but I've not flown any round here yet.

There are the Gog Magog Hills just south of Cambridge (but I gather we're not welcome there), the ridge carries on west, and I know people do sometimes slope on Royston Heath (from the Bassingbourn club, but again I haven't been along).

I've got a Alula Evo, side arm launch foamie, hoping that I'll be able to work marginal lift without the long drive.

Maybe we could share the fuel getting to Ivinghoe sometime (not for prob 4 weeks I guess, I'm kind of busy).
