Brilliant, well done.
Re the soldering difficulties, that can happen when you mix 60/40 and lead-free solder. I did the same on my Corona module aerial - you have to solder the coax to the module, I forgot it would have been tinned with lead-free and used 60/40. Messy.
But well done with the Mpx conversion, neat job.
Phil

aahhh thats gotta be it, the solder I used was form my old man and had been in his garage for many a year... who knows its content!

I got another hour of testing in yesterday with faultless results.

I have seen a few people pop up with "I've lost 3 planes to Corona 2.4, dont use them! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!" kind of comments yet they give no detail as to which module or hack they've used and what they installed it into.

They talk of the link being lost in the air?  $%&

On the flip side I've also seen chaps says "I've got all my models on it with no probs"   $%&

More testing for me I think, I'll order up another RX this week and try it in a glider (I'm a glider guider at heart)  :study:

Thanks for all the help so far guys!

cheers

steve

I thought I'd add this here to keep the info in one place, Rob from GC posted on another thread I have running RE previous glitching issues with some of the Corona 2.4 gear...

Pasty, I think I can answer your glitching question,  I had an early Corona V2 module in an FF7 and certain control positions would generate a glitch.  On mine it was most notable on the gear switch.  I cooked that module trying to fit it into an FF6, but that's another story.  I replaced the module a couple of months ago, and that module worked perfectly with none of the glitching of the earlier version.  The receivers also locked on faster on switch on, and reconnect if the tx signal is lost for several seconds, which the early ones wouldn't.  Corona must have updated the software in the last year as it was a different beast to the early V2 release.

Looking good Pasty! :af

Ordered mine today, I have started to mould the box for the back of the TX and will attach it a touch of silicon.

Well that is the plan! ::)

Cheers for the inspiration1 :af

Well, fitted my conversion last night and due to the great help on here it went easier than an easier thing!!

So thanks a lot Guys! :af

I was going to mould a box to fit the back of the SX, for some reason I had the back of the MM in mind, and the SX is slightly different to how I was visualising it, on reflection that was far too far over the top!

I had a walk down to Maplins and found this:-

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=26578&OrderCode=SC78K

It is about the size of a matchbox, and fits very neatly within the label on the back of the TX, I put clear parcel tape over the label and stuck it on with 2 small strips of servo tape and a bit of silicon adhesive, and using the right angled plug, I swapped over the pins to 7, I had to modify the plastic body of the plug with a Dremel and Drum sander to make it fit but this is a very neat solution and looks like it should be there.

Everything worked as it should but I have not modified a model as yet so have not had a chance to range check but I will get this done at the weekend.

One thing I did find, my kit was supplied with a 4 ch Rx by mistake I also bought a 4ch Rx, GC  sent me an 8ch Rx and I kept the extra 4 (paid for it), the 8ch is absolutely fine and one of the 4's is fine but the other 4 ch Rx bound OK then died as if the battery had gone, so I changed the battery which had been fine for the others and the same happened, it came back with a squeeze of the case!! :o I thought it has a dry joint or something especially after what Eric had posted about these, not a problem I thought just send it back for test but now no matter what I do it works! I have had it on for an hour and still no problems, I chilled it, fine, this is worse because in theory if I send it back they will find nothing wrong, if I use it it may go wrong!! :-\ I will contact GC  and see what they say.

Apart from that though I am well pleased, this was done so I can keep a model in the car at all times so we are not taking expensive mouldies here but all the same I don't want an errant model on my hands as I have to be responsible as we all do.

Cheers

Nige.

Hey Nige

Good to see you got yours up and running.  :af

QC can be a problem on some of the Chinese stuff, theres been some issues with the Frsky stuff too... I always test my stuff fully before anything goes off a cliff, if I get a duffer like you might have and there might be an issue with returning it I just bin it and get another... its still cheaper than getting one of the main brand RX's :)

Steve

You are right, I think I will relegate it to testing, cheap as chips trouble now is it has not given any issues at all, I have run a 1500mah battery down with it!!

I don't expect GC to be able to do anything as it now works, if that is the case I might open it up and have a look see.

Glad yours is working OK I am pleased you started this off I have enjoyed getting it going.

Now to install in a model.

Cheers Mate

I'm pleased too, I got me some 2.4 action on the cheap! I've now been able to use a large stretch of coastline for soaring which was previously off limits due to a power club being close by. Oh and now I can gorilla fly anywhere without concern.  :ev

I was out on slope testing my new RX's today... all rock solid and a pleasure to use.  :af

I forgot to say that I'm running the 4ch RX  on a single cell lipo in my homebrew SAL wing... had 5-6 flights on it and no probs.

Hi Pasty,
Thanks for starting this topic as I have used it to inspire me to go 2.4
- Also thanks for the PM re aerial soldering.
I have to report total success (so far) with my Corona module on a Cockpit SX. Put the RF board & extension board in a Maplins 50X50X20 case which I velcro-ed to the back of the Tx. I also used a 90 degree 5 pin DIN as suggested to make it a bit neater.
I have yet to fly the slope hack that I have attempted to put the Rx in (I've had to gouge out a bit more foam as the Rx is bigger than the 35 Meg one it replaced and it also needs a larger servo extension lead to fit in the model) but on the bench it binds OK and wiggles all the surfaces it should.
Personally I thing that the case I bought is a wee bit too small as the Aerial CoAx is a bu**er to get in - it's too stiff to bend well inside and I would suggest a larger volume box to prospective purchasers. The aeril CoAx to board soldering is also a bit fiddly - I had to take mine into work where I used a very small & pointy soldering iron that they had there. Apart from that I judge this bit of kit an A+ purchase for those of us that want to try 2.4 but are a bit cautious of outlaying large wads of money (read: tight bu**ers!)
Thanks again,
Clive.

The aerial coax to board soldering is also a bit fiddly
Remember that the aerial pads are tinned with lead-free - dont do as I did with one of my modules  :embarassed:
It didnt occur to me that it was lead-free and I soldered the aerial on with 60/40... they really dont mix well & I ended up "buttering" it on.   :embarassed:

Cheers
Phil

Back to report.......

Nothing to report!  :)
No Glitches, no range faults no negatives whatsoever.

Tx behaved perfectly on 2.4 and 35Meg when module unplugged. :af

OK, these are initial observations but long term I see a bright future for this piece of kit. I have already bought another Corona 2.4 Rx for an EasyGlider Electric that I have ordered.
Looks like the way ahead (for me, at least)
Clive.

Good work Clive!

Corona still have a few quality control issues so I check everything as best I can before committed to air.

Having said that I'm yet to have any issue with my Corona gear.  :af
