That's very good... Other wise when the retracts are rigged up then the wing wouldn't fit in the wingbags! ;D

OK Chaps,

The P51 is built assembled and awaiting an airtest, soo, I might as well get on with the Chipmunk.

I have a good reason to get it sorted now as well, more of which later.

Hello All,

Its been a little while, but for a good reason.

I ripped a leg out of the P51  :'( :'(. Not my fault I hasten to add, but obviously I cleared everything out of the way and fixed it.
I also built a YT Skyraider for a freind, and machined up another scale prop hub for a 1/5th Corsair, oh yeah, and I have been given my newly acquired Bearcat a going over and re-servo job.

Apart from all this I have been really lazy and done bugger all.

Soooo, I have started on the Chipmunk again this afternoon, piccies to follow as its to windy to go flying.

As promised, some piccies:

I ripped all the covering off the wing this afternoon. Originally, I was just going to spray over the original paint, however, I always had the nagging doubt that there may be something underneath that could be a show stopper, so off it came.

I also decided to put all the bits together to remind me what it looks like. ooooeeeerrrr, its a bit on the chuffing big side.

That's my 80" span Jerry Bates Bearcat in the background.

I did find a few dings and things but nothing major at all.

In fact, I am pretty pleased, except for one thing. This black muck. Its only at the inboard corners of the two flaps. Its dry, but I'm not sure what it is.

The only thing I can think of is old, dried out glow gunk.  $%& $%& $%&

SO, the plan is, make up the servo extensions and get them in, carry out a few minor repairs. Sort out that black gunk, or maybe just leave it. Anyone got any opinions on it  :xx :xx :xx

Then recover with solatex and paint.

Sounds so easy doesn't it.

I'm also debating on fitting the ZG62. It was meant for towing gliders, but we seem to have gorn orf that glidder towing malarkey now.

I'm absolutely certain that a ZG38 will just slot in with none of the hassle that the 62 will cause.

Need to have a think about that one.

Onwards

Charlie, could that black stuff be dried mould? Is the wood there normal consistency? Or is it kind of powdery?

I've seen balsa go soft and powdery when attacked by a black mould similar to that. Hope it isn't but if it is consider soaking it with thin cyano.

Could it be black paint, bled through from the wing walkways? It looks much better with that covering gone, a good decision me thinks. A word of caution about soaking with cyano, it may make the sheet very brittle, do a test first. But, could you not just locally replace the gunky sheet?

Ian,

I hadn't thought of that.

It could well be black paint thats bled though, or has been attacked by glow fuel and bled through.
I understand that the Chippy had an ST 3000 originally which would explain it.

It all seems solid enough and there are no cracked joints so I am inded to just leave it.

What do we think.  $%& $%& $%&

I am torn between the current BBMF Chipmunk colours and the original red, white and whatever colour the grey is.

Seeing as it will all be covered up in primer first, I suppose its really a blank canvas job.

Decisions, decisions  :study: :study: :study:

Weeeheeee,

I have re-started, again.

All my gash jobs are done, for the moment, the Bearcat wing is still elswhere being painted  :xx :xx :xx so I dug out the Chippie and got cracking.

I will up date with some photo's later on in the week. Suffice to say, I am just filling in the missing bits on the wing and hope to start covering very soon.

Still torn between putting the Z62 in or going for something a bit smaller  $%& $%& $%&

62 seems abit of an over kill Charlie....I'm fitting a DLE 32. When I was at binham last month I watched one fly on a 26 which seemed OK. Although the owner Bob Heart, said a 30 would be much better.

I know you mentioned you want to aerotow, but the cowl is not so big, unless you are happy having a lump taken out of the side.....(your choice)

Still working on mine too, stripped the solar film off and glassing at the moment.

Al.

Believe it or not, the exhaust isn't the issue. I had intended running a pipe to a remote can and then to a scale exhaust out let pipe.

The carb is the issue as it sticks out a fair bit. If I put a carb bend on it would make the problem even worse. A Z38 will probably go straight in, but then I'm not sure if it would be any good for towing  $%& $%& $%&

Not knowing anything about Aero Towing I went and read this http://www.glue-it.com/aircraft/general-information/glossary/a/aerotow.html
to give me a bit of an idea about what you were up to.
I don't suppose it would be any use to you Charlie but for those of us that have no idea of what he is up to with this rather nice Chipmunk I thought I would share it.

That was in interesting read.

A few if us in the club took up gliding/towing a few years ago. I was always on the back end wirth either a 4m Multiplex Alpina or later a 5m ASW 20.
One of the guys still has a 6m DG1000. These were usually towed up with Stueysheeps greenly with a Z62 on the front. The ASW towed OK as did the DG but verticals were out  ;D ;D ;D most of the time.

The tugs we had available are now sold, hence I sold my gliders.

I am thinking that if I stick the 62 in the Chippy I can tow the DG up and go over to Binham next year with these guys: http://scalesoaring.co.uk/yabb/yabb2/YaBB.pl

It won't tow some of the monster sailplanes that they have, but should acquit itself OK on the 5m to 6m stuff  :xx :xx :xx

As much as I like my warbirds, I still miss my involvement in glider towing so I can kill two birds with one stone.

A decent scale glider tug.

I struggled to haul 1/3 scalers up with my Wilga that I had, I think it was due to the drag of the airframe, however a 62 greenley will haul them up with no problems.

With a 38 up front you'll be able to haul 1/4 scale and possily at a push a very light vintage 1/3 scaler. 62 up front I don't think you'll have issues with Charlie R's slippery one!

The trouble is the boys now fly 1/2 scalers, there are a few up there from 1/4 scale but most are around 1/3 scale at Binham.

I would say, if you can get away with it then fly it with the 62, remember about prop ground clearance though!

Cheers Steve,

1/2 scale is out I think. I never envisaged that sort of size TBH.

The prop clearance thing is a very valid issue. I need to get her on her wheels then have a measure up. :af :af :af

OK in theory Shaun. Never seen a Chippy with a three blader though.

Was thinking that if it don't fit on diameter, go smaller and up the pitch.

just spent the last couple of hours repairing the dings and dents in the wing.

Nothing major or structural at all, just stuff that I wanted to make right.

Must not forget to re-drill that wing bolt hole  ::) ::)

All being well, I shall be able to make a balsa dust/filler cloud tomorrow evening and the wing will be ready for covering.

I have a couple of rolls of solartex, but looking at it I might just need another roll, or two.
