It's been suggested that I start a new thread covering the finishing of my 1/3rd scale Camel.
Spent today making the Rotherham pump.
It's not finished yet, but you get the idea.

It will spin freely in the prop wash, hopefully.   :xx

Very nice Steve,

You seem to have captured the sleekness of the prop very well and, if you did it all in an afternoon, you did a lot quicker than I managed!
(Some people won't be surprised at that ;D)

And there was me thinking that a Rotherham pump was a cheap sexual experience somewhere up North. There is much I must learn about this serious aeromodelling business before I make some sort of gaffe.

I've also got some finer jewellery type chain. That came from Hobbycraft IRC.

Very tasty bit of leatherwork round the cockpit.  A how to / how I did it would be much appreciated :af

Alan,  Thanks for the offer, but I found just what I was looking for.

The leather trim round the cockpit was made with fake leather, I think it's called leatherette. I got it from a local fabric shop. It's quite stretchy and easy to work with.
I started off with a length of petrol fuel tubing, the black rubber stuff for model engines. This was cut to length so that it would go around the cockpit with a bit left over. The tube was then slit open lengthways along one side so that it would fit over the plywood edge and then it was trimmed to the correct length.
I cut a piece of leather to the correct length and folded 10mm over lengthways, this was glued with cyano.
I then removed the tube and stuck the leather to one side of the slit with cyano. The 10mm flap was butted up against the slit opening in the tube. I then rolled the tube over and glued the leather to the other opening of the slit. The excess leather was then trimmed. This now gave me a rubber tube covered in leather, with a 10mm doubled over flap on one side.
The tube was fitted back onto the cockpit opening with a few spots of cyano to keep it in the correct position.
Using a compass, I marked the holes for the eyelets. I had a stroke of luck here, as the spacing I had chosen just happened to work out perfectly ;D
I used a drill that made a tight push fit hole for the eyelets and found that by sliding an eyelet onto the shaft of a jewellers screwdriver, they were very easy to push into the holes through the leather flap and plywood. A spot of thin cyano on the eyelet before fitting will ensure they stay put.
The next stage was the lacing. I tried button thread first, but it looked too thin and didn't really show up. So another trip to the fabric shop and I found some 'Fine Blind Cord'. This looked much better, but was only available in white.
I cut a length that would go around the cockpit, held one end in the vice and rubbed a black permanent marker pen along it, job done.  ;)
I then found that this cord was too thick to go through the eyelets twice  >:(. So a bit of head scratching later, I stripped the insulation from some multi strand cable, the sort that's used on cars and cut some pieces about 100mm long. These were folded in half and pushed through the eyelet in a loop over the cord. From inside the cockpit, I pulled them tight, then folded the two ends of wire over and trimmed off the excess. From the top, the loop of thin wire can't be seen and it pulls the cord down into the eyelet opening, making it look as though it's two pieces going through. :af
Hmmm, just realised this is a bit of a long drawn out description - sorry.

Made the Gun sight and the Pitot head.

This scale detailing is quite absorbing once you get into it.

Looking at photo's, it seems that most had the Gun sight on the right hand gun, near the front, but some had it fitted between the guns further back. Or am I cracking up? :-\

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Steve, other than saying most sights were ring and bead, my docs don't mention where they were fitted, i have pictures with it on the left gun at the front. My guess is it was a pilots preference, and could be as simple as if he was left/ right handed, this of course could be pants. :'' :''

Just put it on the same side as your full size refs :af

Also, I made the fittings that will go inside the centre section inspection window.

These are the joiners for the two Pitot tubes and the aileron control wire tensioner.

Yes, I'm spraying the fuselage and wings etc. although I used a brush for the undercarriage, which saved a lot of messing about with masking.
Just three wing panels left to do and then it's on to the markings.

Looks a treat Steve :af :af

Ian.

Thanks Ian,
As I said the paint is great to use with either a brush or gun.  :)

Work is a bit busy at the moment, got to go over to Norway for some UAV flying (the day job).
When I get back, I will be assembling the Camel and running the engine. I'll take some pictures then.

I have put 3mm clevices on the flying and landing wires, but i'm having second thoughts  :study:
They are quite a fiddle to connect and seem to want to pop off  :banghead:

Anyone got a better solution?

If you don't mind paying the price you could use Mick Reeves fork ends and flat wire.

Clive

1/4 Flair Tiger Moth - Moki 30cc / 1/4 PA 18 Cub - Jen 26cc / 1/5 ARTF Chipmunk - MVVS 40cc  / 1/5 Curtis Hawk P6e - Laser 150 / 1/6 BE2e - Laser 80 / On the bench - 1/4.5 MR Strutter - Laser V200

I love the Mick Reeves forkends, though I eventually didn't use them for the flying and landing wires on my Camel, though did use them everywhere else. The problem I had was that the 'swivel' end of the made up wire pulled through. Our very own Ceejay made my clevis', left and right handed jobbies, from steel, 3mm thread off the wire, 2mm to the bracketry. I gave my Camel some good old stuntage, loops, rolls, spins etc and these items were more than up to the job. PM the man if you fancy a set, well recommended :af

I don't know how to upload it to here though  ???
I could e-mail it to you if you like.
