Still not fitted those rigging screws  :embarassed:  Lost all interest and drive since early August in anything :-\  I pushed myself the other day to do a bit, the 1st in weeks and made up some instrument bezels and a magneto switch but that's it so far.  I still need to make a gun up and remake the goggles that fell off in flight and were lost.  I just remembered the numbering also needs painting on the tail fin + the lift here etc on the fuselage!

Still not sure about the sizes these should be and there seem to be so many variations of layout to so whatever I do cant be wrong  ::)

Bezels need drilling out for some sort of fixings and the clear plastic cutting for the glass.

Reluctant to spend out on a ready made faux engine and not looking forward to making one up myself right now I was thinking perhaps in the interim I could go with smoke and mirrors................... I quickly taped in a piece of paper to see what you think  $%&  I figure there is nothing worse than a flying picture without something looking like it's moving in the cowl.

The blurred rotary engine looks brilliant, very simple but clever idea.

If you are feeling generous you might consider posting the pic on here. I could pinch the idea for my Puppeteer.    :embarassed:

I posted the blur picture in the WW1 section including a negative version which I think looks much better.

The clock was to big so decided to make another in the last hour.

I agree, did the same with my mini version on the Peanut Tripehound.

I started on the Vickers today using the tube from a roll of Solatex as a base.  I wrapped it with 3/32" balsa which made it the right size then put strips of 3/32" x 1/8" on to make the corrugated ribbing.
I cut the breech part from 3mm ply and faces it off with 1/4" balsa........... lightened it then some 1/32" ply on the sides.  Still plenty to do but it's looking a bit like a gun now I think.

Still plenty of bits to add to the Vickers but at least I have the rear mount made for it and it sits in place ok.

A classic example of Shaun's approach.  Once again proving that with a bit of time and a lot of skill, beautifull results can be had from everyday materials and tools.

It's looking fantastic Shaun :af

Thanks chaps but it still needs a few bits adding and whilst in pieces I should have sanded and filled the grain more because some of it still looks like wood............. better than no gun though I think.  I still owe my modelling philosophy to Gordon I refer to your book all the time and find it a great inspiration.  Also to my parents who never had a lot of money and always "made do" with the thinking if they cant buy it can they make it which is  a hard habit to break   ::)

I stole some of Gordons ideas directly from his book "Scale Aircraft" such as how to make the magazine for a Lewis which I put on my SE5a.

I added a few more bits of noise this morning and given it 3 coats of Aldi purchased satin black water based paint.

I think it needs the spent cartridge chute or it will look a little sat out in the breeze, I'm not sure what if anything went the other side I guess just a hole in the top deck going to the ammunition box  $%&  I also need to make up the screen thingie which attaches to the gun.

I will be taking the Pup to Oz but only that I cant be @rsed to drag a trailer with me.

I think the cartridge catcher looks like this:

I spent the afternoon sorting out my parents camper van which had an electrical problem and whilst there picked up a piece of 3/4" ali tube which will make the air intakes for the engine :)

I cant find any pictures anywhere detailing the spent cartridge chute or how the bullet belt get into the gun anywhere and I'm reluctant to glue on my interpretation without knowing it's close to right  :-\

This vaguely shows the chute sticking out of the bottom - you can see it inside the framework too:  (photo from here)

Here's the Triplane's version Shaun - probably very similar.     I caught it when they were fixing the Tripehound a couple of years back.

Thanks gents for your input not much info on tinternet is there :(

After thinking about it again and the picture Yoyo posted which I had seen before and kinda gave me the rough shape I have I decided to just glue it down as it is.  The whole thing is just a big toy at the end of the day and is not very close to scale and you cant make silk purses can ya  ;D

I think the majority of people wont have a clue what it's for let alone what shape it's supposed to be same as the rev counter being on the cosh I'm sure someone will comment on it not looking right even though they were generally set that way so the indicator would be perpendicular when at maximum revs i.e. 1200rpm to save having to look close........... needle pointing up means max revs.

I messed up and glues it 2mm to far away from the gun  >:(

BTW it's made from 3 pieces of 1/4" balsa glued together faces off with 1/32" ply to give a hard surface then litho ca'd on top of that.

I have several picture like that Michael it's something you don't realise you cant see until you are looking for it  ;D

It now seems I have made a huge error on my colour scheme for B1807, it was developed as a night fighter from the start, and was painted in Nivo Green all over including the cowls. The struts and landing gear were painted Black and it was fitted with night flying lights and did have wing lights on the out wings.  The Rotheram pump was mounted on left hand front U/C leg.

I'm, not sure what to do now  :-\

Hi Simon

I had thought about sticking them on with something (silicon sealant) but I was thinking would it be better to let them come off will it save damage  $%&  I had a couple of okish landings even in that wind but they looked crepe due to tyres coming off  ;D
2nd landing was poor and I broke a landing wire fixing point but it was only a 2mm bolt being pulled in a sheering action but again perhaps better that than something else giving I don't know  $%&

On the whole though I'm very happy with it, reduction drive teething troubles sorted out, more detail going on and I got to fly with 3 Dawn Patrol members and their aircraft which was great  :)

ref landings with bipes, I think we and many others could learn a lot from Mr Redhsaw (I just got to lean the northern lingo  ;D) and I bet once you manage to get a few more hours under your belt with the DVII you will be landing perfectly.  Whilst landing at Osbournby Ian said to me throttle/down, I took this to mean down throttle and TBH ignored that thinking I was already on the stall.  What he meant was give it some throttle and down elevator to stop it taking off in the hight wind  :embarassed:  Like I said I gotta learn this Northern jive  ;)

I have done another couple of detail bits by adding the engine air intakes and made a replacement pair of goggles for the pilot ready for Tibenham on Friday.  I just started carving a right gloved hand for the pilot, I will see how it comes out before I attempt the left one.  One of these days I will get a seat made up, legs and boots  :''

I got B1807 painted on either side of the fin last night in white but it still needs the black putting on inside that.  Picture thanks to NSS from this evening at Tibenham.

Great Web site guy's. The Pup build is very informative as I will be building the New Kit of the 85.5" w/s 1/4 scale Sopwith Camel by Arizona Model's here in the State's. The kit has just been laser cut and I should get the second one off the line after the display kit. I hope to post picture's of it and maybe a build thread if I can work it out. You guy's do a nice job on your builds and I enjoy the site very much. Tony Harris.

This pup was not a kit but I did work from the BUSA plan to rebuild it............... must remember to put the plans in the trailer to take to Barkston 2012 and return to Simon  :embarassed:

Please do a build thread on your Camel when you get the kit I'm sure you will be able to get the hang of it quick once you get started posting it's not that hard.
