With a frontal impact such as this where the engine wasn't actually rotating, I'd say it's highly likely you've bent the crank probably between the flywheel & the front bearing rather than simply misaligned the 2 crank webs. The other possibility is the flywheel is also bent if this had contact as well. Try removing the flywheel and checking the crank for true.........if it's is true, then that points to the flywheel.

Phil

When I had a brief look last night whilst the engine was assembled. The flywheel wobbled about half as much as the prop driver. So it looks like the bend is where it leaves the crack casing... $%&

You have to check it as a complete assembly with prop driver and flywheel on.  Sounds like a bent flywheel to me and you may be able to get away with facing it off where the prop driver bolts on.

Just spent another 5 minutes with CC, and even with the flywheel and prop driver removed, the tapered crank bit (you know where that famous woodruff goes) still move from side to side when the crank is rotated...  :-\

Yayyyyy,#

At last, a bit of luck.

Spent the afternoon stripping the 38. I put the crank in the lathe, centred it then basically built up the engine around in whilst still in the lathe.

Stuey just nipped round and we ran it, on a test bench on the drive. Suppose the neighbours will have a moan to SWMBO now  :D :D :D

Anyway, after a false start, due to a broken woodruff key, it now runs a treat agin and the prop driver is as centred as a centred thing  ^-^ ^-^ ^-^

Happy bunny now.

Will stick it back in the airframe, carefully, and get back to where I left off on Thursday evening  :xx :xx :xx

Soooooo,

Maybe Wednesday/Thursday for a spot of P51 aviating  :xx :xx :xx

That's good news although I don't see how building it up in the lathe can make any difference.  Good luck with the maiden.

Yayyyy,

Its finished.

Needs an engine run, a range check, both at the same time, and an airtest assuming succesful completion of the former.

Its a bit shiney, but I can live with that, and I haven't put the supplied gun ports on as they are embarresing and I couldn't bring myself to fit them.

I'll get the airtest and Barkston out of the way then have a think about them. $%& $%&

Unfortunately, it won't get flown till next week as family commitments preclude any attempt at flying this weekend.

Got the weather booked for next Monday evening tho  :af :af

In the meantime,,,,

I'll bore you all with the details.

I asked CharlieR to do the initial airtest. I did this because I absolutely hate doing my own, don't know why, I just do. I have done them for other people when asked with no dramas so it must be me.

Anyway, Charlie R took her up and just needed a few bleeps of trim to sort it out. Initially it flew tail down, but once trimmed she sits just fine.
The undercarriage has stayed down. Everything works fine on the bench, but at the field there is a slow leak and being as they are air up and down, I decided rather that chance a wheels up, we might as well leave them down and locked.
Stall, rolls and general handling have been pronounced fit for my trembling fingers so after about 8 minutes in she comes for a greaser on full flap.
Strange. This is the first model I have owned where no elevator trim is needed with flap.

Smiles all round then.

Now my turn. I pulled the wing off and had a gander inside, just in case something had come loose, which it hadn't. tweaked a few air supply hoses and things, just in case. Nope, still leaking. I think I know what the problem is, but I'll have a look tomorrow.

Fuel up, start up, shut up and fly it time.

Coooooo, not an anti climax, but a really pleasant feeling to find it soooooo nice to fly. It doesn't do anything nasty and seems to handle really well. I did get the tail down attitude once airborne, but I know that it was my mishandling not the model and as soon as I realised, I backed off the elevator and all was fine.

I was a bit worried about landing a big heavy model, but it came in really nice and solid on full flap. OK, I bounced it and knocked a leg fairing off  :embarassed: :embarassed:, but if that's as bad as it gets, I'm happy with that.

Speaking of happy. Am I ????

Oh yes, extremely happy, still grinning in fact.

The only query I have to ask of you all, is:  I'm getting 6200 rpm from the Z38 with a 20X10 menz Prop. It seems to pull well enough, but, should I be looking for more, or is that prop and RPM Ok.

Thanks to Charlie R, Mudders, and Stueysheep  for all their help, and of course you guys on the forum for your help and advice. Its really appreciated.

Stuey will be along soon with more piccies.

Charlie C

Great news Mr C :af :af

Ref. the revs. I doubt you'll get any more since the prop is at the larger end for a Z38, a 19 x 10 on this style of model is recommended, but if it goes well enough it should be quieter on the 20 x 10 so I'd leave it as is :af
