With retro models making somewhat of a comeback we thought it about time we had a retro event. With the invaluable help of Paul 'Onslow' Bardoe of PB models we have managed to secure the former RAF Sleap airfield in Shrewsbury, the same venue where a recent warbirds event was held, so this site will be familiar to a few forumites. I visited the site with Paul on the friday prior to the JMA AGM, it really is a superb venue in a very picturesque location. The event will be held on Sunday August 14 and all entrants must have BMFA insurance.

The event is designed to bring together sport models of the 60's to 80's like the Legendary Bullet also the Tornado, Orion, Taurus, Acro Wot, Skydancer, Chevron, Gangster, Graduator, Racketeer, Curare, Magic, Skymaster, Festival, Wot-4's, Sapphire, Saphir, Arrow, Jetta, Bulldog, Meteor, Pulsar . . . . . . . the list is endless!!

The Funfighter range is also eligible!

The nice thing about this event is that you do not need a huge, expensive model with 'wow factor' to enter . . . . . quite the opposite! and the chances are you will have a model to take already! If not, there is plenty of time between now and August 14 to make one, or renovate what you have had hanging up gathering dust in the workshop!

There is a huge number of types to chose from, so start building (or renovating) and come and join in! i am sure there will be many who will have fond memories of those old favourites and there will be much to talk about as those classics are brought out of the car to assemble for flying!

Final details and numbers are being finalised as i type so we will update all via this post and other forums. For more details please contact Paul via his website  www.pbmodels.co.uk

In the run up to the event, it would be nice to see what you plan on taking and what projects you have underway and keep us updated on. This has the makings  of a great event and it is certainly something different.

I cant make August as its our busiest time, shame as it sounds a most appropriate venue for the 2.4g Reeds and Single-Channel gear.  Any chance the event will be recorded on video?  DVD proceeds to club funds or to charity?
Cheers

Are these retro enough  ;D ;D

Tauri Style Model, built last week from a part 30 year old kit, ( It was a part kit because loads of bits were missing) I came across at a bring and buy . It also had some 30 year old solarfilm  with it ( horrible to apply, modern solarfilm / profilm is sooooo much better),  Vintage OS Max 30 S I had  and my 2.4g    RCS  Reed set.

1969  X-Kraft  Aileron single channel model  with  RCS   Tx
1964  P1147 Single Channel Delta with MacGregor Codamac Tx
1966 Weekender  Single Channel With RCS Tx

And I've also got a Tadpole flying wing ( like an upsidedown Sharkface with bits missing...

If you've not had a look , check out Phils and My website at www.singlechannel.co.uk to see more old stuff and the test flight of the 2.4g Reed set on a Junior 60.

I guess my Four Star 120 with "vintage" MVVS 15cc would be too new.......

I really like the look of your Skydancer as an electric on 4S (of course) with MVVS 4,6/840/RAY C3546/05/ Mega 22/30/4 on 11x6.

I really will get round to building another Dactyl for 4S (Mega 22/30/4 fits straight in the mount!) The last one with Enya 40 was lost to radio failure in the 80s.

Smog Hog (for my "sports standard" 4S 3300) is still on the list - but no, I'm not old enough to have done that first time round!

All the above look good to me . . . . . get building that Bi-Stormer!

A few more details i have been given about the event . . . . .

No certificates will be required, but you MUST be a BMFA member and have proof of insurance on the day.

Sleap is an active airfield so we will have flight line marshals in place to assist pilots not used to sharing an airfield with full size .  It is the home of the Shropshire aero club who have given permission for us to hold this event .  Toilets and a cafe are in the control tower , we will also have a BBQ available .  Any one that turns up in period dress and vehicle will get a free burger free flying and celebrity status ?  It will be a £1.00 to fly for the day and that goes to the club only, spectators are free,

Hoping to bring a couple of new models that may not have been seen by many. One is the Festival and the other is the Double Vision, Clive Hall designed and kitted them, have attached a pic of the Festival. The Double Vision was a twin fuselaged version of it. Steve Elias and i think John Palmer flew these at Sandown. Will be a squeeze to get them done but i am hopefull. [ Specified attachment is not available ]

Time is ticking on and Augut 14 is not far away! what progress have people made? what are you bringing? i have picked up a few airframes over the last couple weeks that although a bit tatty, will be good enough to fly at the event prior to proer restoration. One is a Mini Chevron, a Flair Meteorite (courtesey of Cactus), Crescent Tornado airframe, and a mod'd Gangster 63 with twin engines! from ebay. Could have a Pulsar by then if i get chance to pick it up!

What a lucky find! came from a fellow Swindon club member, a Crescent Bullet Mk2! Fibreglass fuselage with the integral fin and wing fillets which i do think look quite good. This is to be the donor aircraft to produce a mould, the original fuselage was chopped strand matt which was common at the time. The new fuselages will be more up to date and will be epoxy glass. Tomorrow morning I am taking the fuselage to some friends who will be carrying out the work.

Have been quite lucky recently and have picked up a few nice airframes that will not take too much work to bring to Sleap, i did hear at Welshpool that there will be a few retro helicopters turning up which will be a nice touch, had this Lark given to me at the weekend but i doubt i will have it ready for the 14th unfortunately although i may get the Kavan Jet Ranger going for then . . . . i am going to be busy!

From what Paul has said, we are getting good numbers but we want more! even of you if it is unfinished or to old to fly, it can still be a static display model, or just come along for a dose of nostalgia!

I'll be along with my Slik Fly and maybe even a Barnstormer if I can get it recovered in time. :)

Chaz
Re: Bi-Stormer vintage.

I think it was 1971-72 ish, but an e mail to Eddie at DB Sport and Scale would confirm it for sure. He's still selling the Plan-Pack for it....  As I'm sure you know Chaz, the Bi-Stormer was the bipe version of the Barnstormer, which is also available in several sizes.

I actually still have a couple of old DB kits here. An Expo 80, circa 1978, and a Tinker kit, similar age.......pure Boddo magic.  :)

Strike one - I planted the Joker deep and crisp and even this afternoon.  At least the shattered foam ended up that way.
Weird thing is that even though it decimated the MVVS 90, it didn't strip a single servo?
Still got an Acrowot though!

It may not have stripped any servo gears Rob, but after a thump like that it'll almost certainly have moved some components in the servos and receiver. Take a look. Bet they're leaning like pine trees in the wind...... A bang like this usually knackered the crystal in a 35mhz receiver, although I imagine you'd be on 2.4ghz?

Been there, done that.

Yes, 2.4.  Everything still seems to be working ok, all servos still centred, no bent plugs, nothing that I can see.  I guess the receiver will go in a foamy for a while to see how it behaves.
As for the engine, can you still get spares for MVVS?  It needs a crankshaft and carb as the prop blade (singular) is at a jaunty.angle and the carb several feet removed from the engine.  I guess the cow-pat it landed on was baked like concrete.

This event has already started to develop, and will now include retro helicopters. Paul has said that we should not overlook the many scale kits of the same such as Mick Reeves Spitfires, Hurricaines, Fw-190's and other manufacturers such as Marutaka/Royal, Pilot, Sterling, Pica, Sig, Balsa USA, DB, Complete-A-Pac, Svenson, Precedent and there must be quite a few others i have not mentioned. I remember CAP kits being quite popular in our club for a few years.

Came across this at Weston Park, yet another project on the pile.

Anyone got any pics of what they will be bringing?

have you seen the weather forecast for the 14th?  High wing loading models will be the order of the day, with placcie bags for transmitters.

Just out of interest and on the assumption that Metcheck is wrong, what's the opinion on modern ARTF versions of classics?  Particularly big versions, eg Wot 4 XL?  I've been keeping an eye out for something ready to go to replace the Joker but I don't think it's going to happen in time.  There was a Meteor that came up but Southamton that was too far to go to collect it.
