Would any one have, per chance, the recommended CofG position and control throws for the Jerry Bates 80" Bearcat.

Many thanks in advance.

Are now I know where the Bearcat comes from.
Believe it or not Charlie, I think you have an ex Colt member Bearcat.

I don't know who's it was though. Do I know him.

I wasn't going to tell you, and just turn up at Tibenham with it, however, I need the information so you were bound to find out.

sunday week then?

The only way it can happen Sunday week is if I nick all the radio gear out of the Mustang. No chance of that.

Buuuuuut, it may happen one evening the following week being as we are allowed to fly past 7pm now   :'' :'' :''

Measured off the plan, CG is 7" back from the rear face of F-1

Jerry doesn't state any control throws on the plan.....so just work on the 'that looks right' principle.

As much as you can get on rudder. Don't go mad on elevator as it's very close coupled so the elevator will be very powerful. As much as you can get on flaps (within reason) and around 1" up & down on ailerons should be a safe starting point.

Thanks Phil, Much appreciated.

I am guessing that the elevator throw wont be much different to the Mustang and thats minimal, and I'll use 1" on the ailerons as you suggest.

Hopefully, I will get it airborne later on this week  :xx :xx :xx

Yes....somerthing like that

I'd add in a little expo as well.......just to calm things down around the mid point.........I generally run between 20 & 30% on elevators & ailerons

Flew it this evening  :af :af

Flies nice, though I managed to get it tumbling out of the sky due to a gross miss-handling error on my part.

Thanks to Stuey for talking me through it.

Like it, but didn't, get any pictures. Will take it to Fenland on Sunday all being well.

Its now nearly the end of July and its still had only one flight under my ownership.

Still made the BMFA News though  :af :af :af

Its been an absolute nightmare to start, which isn't right for a Zenoah 38.

It turned out to be a plug cap/HT lead problem.

Stueysheep came round yesterday evening and sorted/repaired it for me and it now starts third or fourth flick  :af :af :af

Cheers Stuey

Hoping to fly it on Sunday and get some piccies  :xx :xx :xx

I think this bearcat is frightened of the field... The ignition unit refused to issue a spark! Good job both the other Zenoahs perfromed faultlessly....

Thanks Steve, that would be very much appreciated. Where are you working???  A coffee stop away per chance  :'' :'' :''

This evening, instead of watching Top Gear, I eeerrr borrowed, the pick up and coil from Mudders' 38 thats sitting all nice and clean on the bench awaiting return to its rightful owner.

First off, the old one just wasn't sparking, I did check it.

Took it into the garded, flick, flick flick, nothing. Plug is full of petrol. (Engine is inverted)

Cleaned up the plug, stuffed it back in, and one flick later its purring away quite happily.
Started first or second flick several times after that.

It did this last week as well, soooooo.

I have put it away now and will drag it out again tomorrow evening.  :xx :xx :xx

Just out of interest. if when I drag out tomorrow the plug is full of petrol, it means fuel is leaking into the bore somehow  $%& $%& $%&

Any ideas.

PCL Ceramics (used to be Porvair) :af

My suggestion would be that the non return valve is not seated properly on the carb face allowing fuel to drain into the head under gravity. Whip the diaphragm out and have a look it should be flush to the face any slight lift would cause your problem.

Might as well put the landing on as well  :'( :'( :'(

Thanks must be given to Mr Mitchell, Moderator of this parish. He/we spent ages mucking about with the Z38 till the problem was solved, (Plumbing by the way) and the engine re-tuned to his satisfaction.

Gotta be said, the Z38 didn't  miss a beat  :af :af :af, Cheers Mr M
