that no on here in GB flys a Viking 2. Got mine 2 weeks ago. I will start to install the rc within the next weeks.
I am going for 2MKS 6126h Servos in the fuse and 4 MKS 6125 Servos on aileron and flaps (5 Eneloops 1900)

Anyone out there flying the Viking 2 ? Setup? Experience?

Maybee that depends on the guy who flys the model.  :''
Then i would have a problem, too  :embarassed:

The next days I will get my 2 MKS 6125h Servos for the fuz and i'm really excited about the quality.

Hi silmarillion

Out of interest how long it take to receive yours? Reading a German thread showed that there is a bit of a wait.

Hi Rusty Knee,
It seems to be very difficult to get a viking 2 because Jiri does not answer all his emails. A few were a bit disappointed. But if you
order one you will definitely get one. But don't count on the expected time for delivery. I bought the viking 2 f3f "new" second hand and is in perfect condition. I personally wouldn't buy it from Jiri. But a lot of people had no problems to order the Viking 2.

I just installed the fuz Servos ( MKS 6125h). Best servos i ever hold in my hands. I will use nearly the same in the wings (MKS 6125 mini).  I applied a piece of 80er glass on the plywood for the servos to get it more stable.

Hope to get it ready, soon.

Greetings, Kai

Yeah I saw that there was quite a bit of frustration regarding emails. Seeing you battery reminds how bloody skinny it is. Which version is yours? Is it the the F3F Hard? I think if I ordered one (not that I can justify/afforf it), it would be the f3f hard for extra landing toughness.

I did order one, but I cancellent because I got a freestyler which cost a lot.  I didn't have a problem with emailing Jiri though. In fairness to him, a lot of email does get caught up in spam filters these days.

Anyway, the price is temping - looks like a nice model.

Stu - for similar money you could get a Predator 2 or Strega off slope racer - they are nice quality now. Maybe nothing more desirable than a viking, but easy to get hold of.

yes, its the f3f hard version. The quality is more than good (the standard version costs 750€). I think thats more than a good price for that kind of model. Others are much more expensive. But the predator seems to be a good choice, too. But to be honest, i had problems with my china imports (typhoon, strega, minimach). Quality is different. Just not that good. Thin, not very flexible, sometimes it reminded me a bit on a yoghurt cup.

Best model i hold in my hands (And that were a lot) is the extreme F3F till now. Thats a really good one.

We will see what the viking looks like in the air

greetings, Kai

I've got a Viking 2 that I am building up at the moment.  I went for a Double carbon layup, and the "race" fuselage.  Oh, and it's the 'E' version too, none of that pure glider faffing around waiting for the wind to blow in the right direction for me :) :)

I actually ordered two fuselages as well, one for a lightweight electric assist version, and one for a balls-out 3kW plus monster.

Not that I can justify it....but had a dangerous thought.....The Czech Republic is in the EU...so no import tax!  :ev

You really are an absolute delinquent!!  :af I'm going to be doing a nice little e-Strega job soon with an "adequate" Plettenberg set-up in it  :ev

Although I'm likely to not prop it up to megadeth as I'm after that elusive blend of terrifying hotliner performance, plus light enough to thermal, plus enough headroom to get some decent longevity from the power train. However I reserve the right to stuff a massive set of batteries and prop on it if I choose to abandon all responsibility.

Did I forget to mention the attachment for firing a smoke cartridge in flight?  Glider aeros look so much nicer with a smoke trail!

I very nearly went with an e-strega instead of the Viking.  I'm not sure what tipped the scales in the end, in fact I still like the look of the Strega...  Maybe if I save up some overtime wages..... :)

Post some photos of your build though Zim, I'll be keen to see it!

Getting the smoke from the tips is pretty easy if you can ignite the cartridges on the ground, firing them remotely can be a bit of an issue, especially out on the wingtips.  You either need a completely self contained system (with an electric or timed ignition system) or some way of running wiring out to the wingtips.  Smoke cartridges can be a bit of a pain to ignite too, but  asmall dose of black powder/cannon fuse or PIC, and an e-match, and you are laughing!

All I'll be using on the viking is a completely self contained ignition/housing unit that is going to screw in place.  It will house the smoke cartridge in a flame proof receptacle (aluminium probably) and then a small battery/rx/ignition switch for firing.

No, not yet. I am waiting for the MKS 6125 mini. Lindinger offers them for 49€ per servo. But they have nothing in stock. Have to wait till the end of June i think. But that doesn't matter. Nevertheless, i have work to do, have to fix the servos of my needle. Had the hyperion ds095 in the wings. Three OK one damaged for no reason. Just gave up his work during the flight. Happily i use the flaps in condition to the ailerons. So nothing were damaged besides the one servo. A lot of people had probs with that servo. First i will change the servos of the ailerons.   Maybee flaps as well.

My aim is to be ready at the end of july. Then i am off to denmark again. There we will see if it was worth the money.

Kai

Seen good words about the MKS, the hyperions seem good if they dont fail, but seen a few stories about them failing.

The Viking 2 does take my fancy, but the absense of emails from Jiri would frustrate me. I asked about price and shiiping to UK, and what is required for custom colour choice...and no answer.

Maybe he realises that I am a tyre kicker at the moment.....but I am expecting some money next month that might be spent already :)

Hi Stu,
i definitely won't by a hyperion Servo again. These 4 in my needle were the first and last ones. The 6125 h i already installed are more than precise and fast. But time will tell.

Seems to be the normal "Jiri customer service".  That would frustrate me, too.

Actually, pretty much normal service from many of the European mouldie manufacturers..  Just keep at it - patience is needed.  A single email doesn't seem to be enough  :-\...

I guess that is how he makes them cheaper perhaps (I didnt say cheap). If he spent a lot of time at his computer, or employed someone else to would add to his costs. Same goes for using dealers I guess (not that that is bad...you pay for their service).

I have not seen anything to indicate he isnt genuine and he as enough order backlog to show he makes good models.

Kai, did you use 5 cell with the Hyperions?

No, i use 4 cells in my needle. I think on 5 cells the damage would happen faster. Now i have installed new "old" servos in my needle and now the model is ready to take off again.

Back to my viking 2. I just got a good tip where i can order my 4 MKS mini Servos for a good price. Just contacted the shop and to my surprise they have them in stock. So i'll take the risk to order servos from england to my home country germany. We will see what happens.

That's life.
price difference per servo 18€. So for 8 Servos 144€  :af
Normally Staufenbiel has good prices but they don't offer MKS Servos .

So i am going to support  the :uk:

Today i managed to kill a 6125 mini servo during the programming  :banghead: .
Don't know what happened. Suddenly it got very hot, began to smell and the jeti module in my ff-10 started to peep.

In addition to that i have problems with the angle of the servo horn. No chance to get a 70degree angle on my flaps.

The rest works fine. Everything else is done.

Yes it was a flap servo and it was free to move. Now that i slept over it and got clear thoughts again i will order to 3150 Servos for the flaps and will keep the last MKS servo for reserve.

I don't know really what happened but i think it was my fault. I used the jeti box to program the servo and during that time it got hot. The box showed me a max voltage of 99.9V. There must have been a moment when it couldn't move.

But overall the servos are really good. More than precise and fast. It was a good choice.
I never needed so much time to install the equipment in a model.

odd, wonder if there is a compatablity issue with the jeti box

thinking of using MKS as wing servos in my next model. S3150 have provided good reliable service...but would like to try something faster.

Yipee, i am ready. Took me a lot of time but i think it was worth it. Everything is done.

Thats my result:
aileron: MKS 6125 mini
V-tail: MKS 6125h
Flaps: S3150

Thats my setup for the maiden flight:
1. ailerons: -18/+10
2. elevator: -8/+6
3. Snapflap (Flaps): +4
4. Thermik: ailerons and flaps +3
5. Speed: ailerons and flaps -2
6. rudder: -10/+10
7. Flaps to aileron mix: -2/+2
8. Butterfly: ca. 80 degree down and aileron 30% up Elevator 4mm down. Will programm elevator in a curve during the first flight.

3,4,5,7 on a switch

The CG is now by 104mm. Final weight 2485gr. I hope that i get the oppurtunity to fly the viking this weekend.

Cheers, Kai

Yes the viking was in save hands Bob. We really had luck this afternoon. Rain stoped and wind changes into a light constance breeze. Perfect conditions for a first flight. It was a real good feeling to fly the viking. Seems to be a good choice.

More tomorrow, incld. Video
