Anybody know of some good sheltered family campsites in this area with big tent pitches and electric hook ups?
Gotta keep the slopers charged if we're near enough to Portland for some westerly cliff top action.  :uk:

It's Bobbyr you have got to worry about....joking Bob :)

Andy ,
There are quite a lot of Campsites around the Local Area , all have electric hook up , i have an 7.5meter across, 12 man tent that i was allowed to pitch at an Owermoigne Campsite this is the Link mate (16 miles from Weymouth) so 20 min drive .
                                            http://www.wdlh.co.uk/Parks/Sandyholme.aspx
Its not so much High End with swimming pool and Nightclub, but its Reasonably Cheap and very clean and Tidy (or was) . also has WiFi which helps  :af
Its also right in the Heart of Dorset Flying Country, 8 miles from Ringstead National Trust Carpark(SW) , 8 miles or so from Maiden Castle (N to NE) , 10 miles from Sutton Poyntz Bowl (SSW to SE) , 12 miles from Chalbury hill forte (E) and 20 miles from Portland for the rest  :af . If you ever decide to give it a try down here, give me a PM and i would be happy to give you a Tour  :af

                          Bob

Oh and Mr Ed (John) hasnt Been here for some Time Andy, since he lost his Job.
So No style would be Cramped at all .

Oh 1 more thing , if you like Cider there is a cider Museum 100 yards from the campsite at Owermoigne  :af

I am sure you will have a great time with your family Andy ,
And like i said , if you PM me when your about i will look at the forcast , ignore it and let you know the best sites within 30 Min's of the Fleet  :af

Hopefully it will be West mostly (for westcliff) ,
but there are some great flying sites around.
Hopefully you can get to see a few, oh and bring your Weasel/Alula ,
cos you can fly that off of chesil Bank  :af

You'll also need the Weasel for DSing in Maiden Castle ramparts if it goes north  ;)
and if it goes east (*) - then pop over to Devon - fly off Beer Head cliffs, looking back east to Portland - then have a pint(s) of beer in the Barrel of Beer at Beer  :)

(* or south - Beer Head south face is even better - 450ft cliff with rounded top & big smooth grassy landing field)

Maiden castle isn't for weasels only either! F3F and the like are good there too. I think front rampart is best....even for F3F. Just means landing front side. it works much better than it looks like it should.

we do lack esterly hills though.

other hills a bit further out include st albans head near worth matravers.

also near by the previous 50.608171,-2.092087 for easterly.

Wingreen for northerly,

The hill fort at Child Oakford.

Portland is good though...even though it does spoil you with easy consistent lift.

Climbing big hills isn't my Forte  :embarassed:,

But Parking on them and Flying is  :ev,
The Longest walk to a slope i do regular is from Maiden castle car park to the Ramparts .

When you get a car park 50 yards from cliff edges on the West side . Or you drive up bumpers Lane to the cliff edge .
Ringstead is a Car park , and Sutton poyntz bowl i drive the Track to the Gate of the Field .

Andy , you don't have to be a Walker matey . There are plenty of Drive N Fly places for every Direction , all within 12 miles from where your staying  :af
The Best 1 you will see from the campsite  :af
                             That's westcliff

Model shops ,
Well there is 2 in Weymouth ,  Kessock models is the biggest , but its more Helicopters than planes . And then there is Redlands models . this is a treasure trove model shop . I swear if you need something they would have it .
but it would be 30 years old.

But in Poole and Bournmouth there are some .
                                                                                            Only really been to  Channel4Models
                                                                                                                            101/103 Charminster Road
                                                                                                                             Bournemouth

So - sunny with a stiff NNW today. Beach first, flying later. Where do you reckon? Will portland do a good NNW or am I heading inland?

I don't think NNW and portland will work...not safely anyway. I can't fly today, but Maiden Castle is an option. I fly (F3F planes included) off the front rampart and land walking down the flatter bit on the from and landing across slope (dodging sheep). Phil Taylor flies off the top for a bigger landing area...but I still think the front is safer (no turbulance) and more fun.

or walk to the grassy flat bit before the car park and land there if its home time and the model is high enough.

I will be flying from the Portland cliffs about 3 pm ,
The forcast is an excellent 16 mph + and Direction from about 1pm will be West , not NNW  :af
Wave Direction is West aswell , which is nice for West cliff , You can fly North from the cliffs aswell Andy , but you wouldnt want to fly a Moldy , i often fly the reaper on the North cliff but you have to land in the rotor , hense using foam .
But its not a worry cos it will be west from 1pm  :af
