FRSky Transmitter on the Horizon
« on: May 31, 2011, 08:05:11 AM »
A little birdie called Eva from FRSky just dropped me a note that they are due to be releasing a full transmitter with telemetery at the end of the year.

I dont know much about this.. but would speculate that this may well be an er9x clone pre-kitted out? - I will see if I can get some more details :-)

Regardless I am pretty certain there will be some interested parties.

What would be nice would be a 9X clone with digital (rather than serial PPM) transfer to the transmitter stages.   Hope it can still run third-party software, in fact a built-in programmer would be nice and probably only add a couple of quid to the product.

I have already asked if it is an er9x clone.. but they are keeping this information to themselves :-(

Fair enough really...  but would be great if they keep the community involved - will only make the product better!

I'm looking forward to the release of the 4ch D series receivers for my planks. Not for telemetry but just because the two way stuff has the rock solid connection and I can't be doing with those DIP switches on my hack module.

After initial doubts, I'm happy enough using the DIPs now.  I'd just like to know that teh proposed Tx will be compatible with existing Rx, and they don't pull their usual stunt of changing the specs all over the shop.
Oh yes, the thread title - I remember my Horizon gear, the horizon often being where I last saw my planes.

They have a wireless trainer system out, but I cant find anyone selling the cord to link the Rx to the back of the Tx.

it'll probably take a few weeks to filter through to retail outlets, just like the 4ch rx and the telemetry hub 'available now'.  It also looks as though you need at least one Futaba FASST 2.4 tx
see here

I emailed Frsky to ask about the new telemetry goodies on their site that no one actually sells yet, I also asked about the transmitter that seems to be in the offing. Their reply is below.

"DHT-U is available now .We are nowing sending sample orders to all of our dealers now .
Most of our dealers will have the samples very soon in one week and will order more in the coming days .

For the transmitter ,we are working on our own transmitter .But it has a lot of uncertain factors .So we can not tell you the exact date when we will have the TX
."

Unfortunately the DHT U product is not really what one would expect.

Essentially, the entire unit and display is actually the 2.4g transmitter,  with a ppm interface to wire in to a tx!   Very much targeted at the DIY hacker!

For now....  Er9x with frsky telemetry mods is the better option :)

Nothing specifically against the Er9x, but I hope FrSky follow MPX and Jeti with their telemetry tx's and have the display where it is easy to take a quick glance at.

At the top of the Tx, like the old JR 3810 (and others).

I think the hard part they will have is that so many (from what I can see) of their fan base are also er9x fans.

They would be wise to consider a radio that is compatible with the er9x firmware.  Do that and they will be on to a winner.

Guess we will just have to wait and see!

Lets hope it has more model memory's than 8 otherwise you would still be better of sticking with a module/hack in a jr378 or equiv futaba picked up on eBay for £40

Well the er9x which must be something they are looking at during their design process has had 16 memories for ages, and allows you to easily copy them around and swap ghem using USB, effectively giving you unlimited memories.

I thought the turnigy 9x only had 8 model memories like the flysky version, is it a proper 16 model memory on board or some hickory to make it like that.

The Turnigy/Eurgle/Hobbyking/Flysky 9x are all the same thing.

The extra memories (and much much more) come from installing the er9x firmware - which is a bit of a faff but not beyond anyone who can put radio gear into a plane.

I bet I've seen worse... ;)

This is how hard it is - fit this (programmer and backlight) then run a program on your PC to upgrade it via a USB lead. Done.

Without the upgrade it is a basic (but very cheap) tx. With it it's one of the most flexible. Still a big cheap box, but very very good for what it is.

The next stage on it's evolution will be a new main PCB - with an SD card slot for unlimited model memories and for recording telemetry data, a more powerful CPU etc etc.

Is there any update on the FrSky transmitter.  I need to buy a new one, I have been thinking about a 9x but the FrSky would probably be worth waiting for.

I thought about going the ER9X route, but took the easy option by upgrading from my ratty old FF8 to a nice shiny FF9 enhanced with the FrSky module.  36 memories will just have to do I suppose, unless I buy another CAMPAC.  The ability to transfer model memories would have been nice, or to back them up on an SD card.

Rob, I have just downloaded and comiled the er9x code and it came out at something like 57K. I am sure I saw a custome board using an atmega128 or am I dreaming?

It's always a risk when you do any firmware update. But the smartieparts board makes it much much easier, as well as adding a backlight.

I don't think you can permanently fry one by programming it unless you apply really high voltages, but recovering from a bricked update can be tricky.

I'm currently looking at what to get for my next Tx. I have a Multiplex UHF set (modified to work on 459 MHz), of which I love the feel. So I'm thinking of replacing the encoder with a Microstar 2000, and hooking that into a Frsky "hack" module. <http://www.mstar2k.com>

Its a long-term project, but I think it will deliver my dream Tx!
