When I connect my wing to my fuselage I have several servos to connect. I was thinking of using a 15 way D type connector which will mate when the wings are connected. Has anyone done this, or am I missing a trick and there is a common way of doing this.

I dunno about powered models, but that is a common solution on gliders. I did a mate's model which had 4 servos per wing - it was wired in to a D type connector.  Indeed the fuselage was moulded to mount the connector and they cam with the kit.

I believe "Ashloks" were/are popular for large models but I don't know if they are available any more.

Problem with using a D type connector is you have to solder the wires to the pins and with small servo wires they are then prone to breaking off as the wire is now brittle at the joint.
If you can use heavy duty wire and fix both plug and socket to the root of the wing it might be ok.
If you need to have a trailing lead, i.e. loose ends, then 6,9,12 pin Ashlocks with the wires crimped are the way to go.

you can enclose the joints in epoxy (or whatever) though.

This is the home of ashloks btw:

I thought he had given up but it looks like there is some stock.

My acacia 3 has this. When the wings aren't bolted on it's a safety feature to only have one side fixed, let the other side float on a short length of wire so if the tape gives way and the wing pulls off 10mm you will still have control...

Oh, hang on - it isn't 'fly it like you borrowed it, land it like you stole it', is it!
So that's where I've been going wrong...

Yeah my tragi 9 way d-type for the wing servos. Works a treat. I even use a RS232 extension lead sometimes when bench testing...saves mounting the wing on.

Sounds like a good idea to me - that's why I'm using 9 way Ds on my Storch restoration.

Male connector rigidly mounted in wing, female (will be) soft mounted with grommets in the wing root stubs to make sure that there is no load on the connector as the wing joint flexes (mainly during assembly)

Make sure you get good quality "D" connectors, some are not made to withstand lots of connect / disconnect events.

Basic Research is what I do - when I don't know what I'm doing!.

Emcotec has just unveiled its new connector.  Unfortunately the postal charge is probably not worth it for small orders, but have a look around the site and see if there is other stuff you need.  I have quite a lot of his higher value stuff like BIC switches, programmble V cable etc, Emcotec products are really very good.

Old thread I know but I just spotted it!
I used a 9 way D-type on  the wing of a Masterline Vandal I built waaay back in 1988. I fitted the connector at the front of the wing on an alloy bracket glassed to the wing as a locating dowel and two plastic screws at the back. Never gave a bit of trouble in the 3 or so years I flew the plane. I did double up the pins for the aileron, using the 3 remaining ones for a flaperon servo later on.
Bear in mind that d-type pins are meant to float, best not to lock them with epoxy as the pins and sockets cannot self-centre. Always use a short piece of heatshrink to support the wire.
I have photos I can scan in if anyone is sufficiently interested and I still have the airframe (may restore it one day) if anyone wants a then-and-now comparison
